The ARO-1130-CA has up to 16 MB of cache and can be used to support RAID levels 0 and 1. It's my understanding that the CAM code in 3-stable/4-current does not support Adaptec RAID controllers. However, is the CAM code compatible with the controller? That is, can I have utilize disks on a 7895 w/ 1130-CA in normal SCSI (non-RAID) mode? Would I obtain the cache benefits of the controller? This is on a SuperMicro P6DBS with dual PII/350s. Would I obtain the cache benefits of the controller? It is possible to support the 7895s as normal SCSI controllers under FreeBSD, but I need to know what PCI device ID the RaidPort specifies for the aic7895s during its attachment. The RaidPort modifies the aic7895 device ID to ensure that 'normal' Adaptec drivers do not attach to devices it has claimed for its own use. The cache will be completely ignored by FreeBSD. -- Justin To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-scsi" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-scsi Tue Jan 26 03:25:11 1999 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id DAA17758 for freebsd-scsi-outgoing; Tue, 26 Jan 1999 03:25:11 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from claret.cisco.com (claret.cisco.com [161.44.2.33]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id DAA17753 for ; Tue, 26 Jan 1999 03:25:10 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from fty@cisco.com) Received: (fty@localhost) by claret.cisco.com (8.8.4-Cisco.1/8.6.5) id GAA00097 for freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG; Tue, 26 Jan 1999 06:25:08 -0500 (EST) Date: Tue, 26 Jan 1999 06:25:08 -0500 (EST) From: Frank Terhaar-Yonkers Message-Id: <199901261125.GAA00097@claret.cisco.com> To: freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: going from 8mm to 4mm - "Initializing" a 4mm drive? Even Better: you can even remove the actuall /dev/pass device, and it still works. Unfortunately, CAM treats the device name I pass it as a string, then parses the string, looking for 'passN' It then converts that to the xpt device, which is does open. I bitched up a storm on the FreeBSD-SCSI when I discovered it, as this completely breaks the model that has worked on unix since the dawn of time, even offering to fix the CAM code to use major and minor device numbers, but was turned down. Yeah, that's intentional, more or less. Justin added the generic "sink" devices earlier this month. We didn't have time to make a final decision on the best way to tell xpt clients that a device is unconfigured. Whatever we end up doing will probably require a change in the CCB size. Once we get around to it, you'll probably only be able to see the sink devices if you specify the -v switch. (i.e. camcontrol devlist -v) So, it's nothing to worry about.
