Well, the kernel I work with for embedded stuff is under 16Kb if you don't want multi-tasking :-) It's actually only 4Kb minimum... even QNX/VxWorks ( the big competitors to NT in this case) are way under 1Mb if you run them stripped... take a look at www.qnx.com. They've got a full version with TCP/IP, windowing system, web brwoser, web SERVER, and a few other things that fits on a floppy :-) Chris -- | Christopher Petrilli | petrilli@amber.org To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-small" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-small Tue Feb 23 15:22: 7 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-small@freebsd.org Received: from members.unlimited.net (members.unlimited.net [209.186.200.8]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 102CF1172D for ; Tue, 23 Feb 1999 15:22:03 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from norami@unlimited.net) Received: from unlimited.net (ts3-103.unlimited.net [209.186.200.103]) by members.unlimited.net (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id PAA04072; Tue, 23 Feb 1999 15:18:26 -0800 Message-ID: <36D33A58.D4F187DD@unlimited.net> Date: Tue, 23 Feb 1999 15:31:37 -0800 From: John Oram Reply-To: norami@unlimited.net Organization: norAmi X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.5 [en] (Win95; U) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: hck@nettest.dk Cc: "freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG" Subject: Re: Embedded MS-Windows NT References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Sender: owner-freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG Henrik: This issue has been vented in the magazine Embedded Systems over the past year or so. Sadly I think you are correct in that the small memory model for embedded systems will drop by the wayside when Micro$oft begins to beat their marketing drums. Unless someone takes the time to educate the writers of the trade journals as to how ridiculous it is to have an 800 pound gorilla sit on a branch designed for a 10 lb monkey. I have seen these folks kill pen-based computing by purchasing the only satisfactory word-processor (aha!), screw up the small handheld DOS marketplace -those both cost us revenue. And now they are muscling into the smallest of platforms to help the WinTel duopoly keep the US stock market pumped up to unruliest expectations. IF anyone has a suggestion on how to clue in the major trade journal writers as to the level of nonsense this is, let us all know. I was going to say... they seem to be pushing WinCE/NT as a solution, and even Steve's recent editorial shows that direction, unfortunately. It's sad, he was one of the few people in the trade rags I respected, but NT/CE is just not an embedded solution in the traditional sense. But /boot/loader is a special beast - for some reasons that I don't quite understand it's an ELF binary packaged into an a.out envelope, so it's really really weird...
