I know a couple of files (net/floppy.tree/etc/rc and router/floppy.tree/etc/rc) are missing due to CVS prlblems (I think), but you are encouraged to CVSUP and check if builds are ok. With the new revision scripts use dialog-based menus, the filesystem trees for the various floppies are merged as much as possible, and also kernels don't need anymore to include the exact size, as mfs_root is now loaded by the forth loader. All this should greatly simplify creation and maintainance of new picobsd types. feedback to me (luigi@iet.unipi.it) or to the list. cheers luigi -----------------------------------+------------------------------------- Luigi RIZZO, luigi@iet.unipi.it . The application itself might take up as low as 512k but I'll be more comfortable with 1meg. 3) Can PicoBSD be configured relatively easily to run from a read-only partition (to minimize any possibility of corruption) or will I have to go the "run-off-MFS" route? 4) does anybody envision a problem sustaining 115,200 baud on COM1 on a 386sx-40? It has a 16550 UART and we'll most likely configure the receive FIFO to be 8 characters deep (that's what works best in DOS). 5) we're going to need to store data to both DOC and a PCMCIA ATA Flash card (the PCMCIA will have to a DOS partition). Since we preallocate space for all storage in a big file before operations, ideally we do not want any writes to the FAT table. I don't see any convenient flags in either mount_msdos or mount to do this. Any problems if I just modify the MSDOS driver to not bother writing just to update the time? (I hope it'll be a relatively easy thing!). 6) I've got a POS hardware that we must interface to that'll require about a 50 nanosecond sleep between byte writes. In DOS I have a carefully calibrated delay loop for this. What is a reasonable method to do this with FreeBSD? For this kind of delay on a 386, is there any point of even making system or kernel calls? Lastly, anything to keep in mind before I base a $10,000 product on FreeBSD? :-) Many thanks! Timestamps on disk are only updated on open/close AFAIK, so that also is a non-issue. > 6) I've got a POS hardware that we must interface to that'll require about > a 50 nanosecond sleep between byte writes. In DOS I have a carefully > calibrated delay loop for this. What is a reasonable method to do this > with FreeBSD? For this kind of delay on a 386, is there any point of even > making system or kernel calls? You can't possibly have a "carefully calibrated delay loop" on a 386sx40 that runs for 50 nanoseconds, since the clock cycle is five times that. If you know the ISA bus timing on your hardware, you can use a series of writes to an unassigned port to obtain a guaranteed minimum delay. If your platform has a high-resolution cycle timer, you can poll that. If you're doing this from user-space, you won't upset the interrupt handler for the UART. If you're doing it in kernel space, you should be sensitive to where you place the delays to avoid same. In the kernel you can expect DELAY(50) to give you at least 50us delay (since I assume this is what you really mean). > Lastly, anything to keep in mind before I base a $10,000 product on > FreeBSD? :-) It's a good choice. Last job I had we based a $100,000+ product on FreeBSD, and made enough money at it to keep us all fed and working. -- \\ The mind's the standard \\ Mike Smith \\ of the man. \\ msmith@freebsd.org \\ -- Joseph Merrick \\ msmith@cdrom.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-small" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-small Wed Aug 25 2:39: 5 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-small@freebsd.org Received: from labinfo.iet.unipi.it (labinfo.iet.unipi.it [131.114.9.5]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 652E215244 for ; Wed, 25 Aug 1999 02:39:01 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from luigi@labinfo.iet.unipi.it) Received: from localhost (luigi@localhost) by labinfo.iet.unipi.it (8.6.5/8.6.5) id IAA02257; Wed, 25 Aug 1999 08:46:07 +0200 From: Luigi Rizzo Message-Id: <199908250646.IAA02257@labinfo.iet.unipi.it> Subject: Re: porting a DOS application (also DOC booting) To: tim@futuresouth.com (Tim Tsai) Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 08:46:07 +0200 (MET DST) Cc: freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG In-Reply-To: <19990825035448.A17461@futuresouth.com> from "Tim Tsai" at Aug 25, 99 03:54:29 am X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL23] Content-Type: text Content-Length: 1172 Sender: owner-freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG > 3) Can PicoBSD be configured relatively easily to run from a read-only > partition (to minimize any possibility of corruption) or will I have to > go the "run-off-MFS" route? that is what picobsd usually does... > card (the PCMCIA will have to a DOS partition). In DOS I have a carefully _nano_seconds or _micro_seconds ? on a 386/40 50ns is 2 clock and i doubt you can even write to memory so fast. if it is microsecond, i guess you could try to develop a special device driver (or just add an ioctl to sio() or lpt* or whatever...) which takes care of the timing possibly with interrupt disabled . cheers luigi To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-small" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-small Wed Aug 25 7:12:32 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-small@freebsd.org Received: from shell.futuresouth.com (shell.futuresouth.com [198.78.58.28]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C61E014C8C for ; Wed, 25 Aug 1999 07:12:24 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from tim@futuresouth.com) Received: (from tim@localhost) by shell.futuresouth.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) id JAA01234 for freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG; Wed, 25 Aug 1999 09:09:43 -0500 (CDT) Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 09:09:43 -0500 From: Tim Tsai To: freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: porting a DOS application (also DOC booting) Message-ID: <19990825090942.A259@futuresouth.com> References: <19990825035448.A17461@futuresouth.com> <199908250906.CAA02321@dingo.cdrom.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.95.3i In-Reply-To: <199908250906.CAA02321@dingo.cdrom.com>; from Mike Smith on Wed, Aug 25, 1999 at 02:06:33AM -0700 Sender: owner-freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG > You can't possibly have a "carefully calibrated delay loop" on a 386sx40 > that runs for 50 nanoseconds, since the clock cycle is five times that. Thanks guys for pointing that out. I knew I should've double checked before I post those figures but I didn't have the information handy. You are right - chances are with the timing of the CPU and the system + compiler overhead (if I use ppi and not writing to hardware directly) I probably can just skip the delay's altogether. I'll look at the timing again - I only remember that its timing requirement is such that it's low enough to make most PC timing sources unsuitable. I haven't worked on this program much in about two years hence the interest in porting it to PicoBSD since maintanence has become an issue. It is only sufficient to do the delay's from user space since I do not wish to jeopardize the serial communication which is of the utomst importance in this application. > > Lastly, anything to keep in mind before I base a $10,000 product on > > FreeBSD? :-) > > It's a good choice. It worked fine with FreeBSD/PicoBSD, but ISA and PCI performance really sucked. I did not encounter any of the problems you have. Make sure of any BIOS settings that may cause problems, you may want to turn off cache to test that. Also you may need to check how the STPC chip and Super I/O chips are programmed, they may need to be reprogrammed to a setting that FreeBSD may work with better. We finally gave up on the STPC and decided to go with the AMD ELAN 410 chips we had better performance with them.
