They have a bunch of Winterms, and they are really, really awful. They're pitifully slow, they crash a lot, etc. But they're free, so nobody complains much. I have always had in the back of my mind that if someone called upon me to provide them with a design for the Internet part of an Internet coffee house, I would know just what to do: Use the tricks of PicoBSD to make a kernel with an MFS root containing dhclient, the appropriate X server and its libraries and an init script that would use DHCP to set up IP and then run X broadcasting for an xdm host. This would probably be too big to fit on a floppy, so I would put it either into a bootable flash card or a CDROM (using MFSROOT instead of the CDROM would trade wear on the CD drive for RAM space. Besides, if a CD sits idle for a while, it spins down, then the next access takes many hundred ms for it to spin back up). It could even have a splash screen to hide the boot activities until X popped up. The server in the back room would be a beefy machine capable of serving all those X clients. It would offer Netscape, Java ICQ and AOL IM and a Telnet client. The only thing I would want to add would be a way to run AOL under WINE (the WinTerms allowed you to log in as a guest to AOL using your own login). Last time I tried this, it didn't work, but maybe WINE has progressed since then... But I digress. I am sure I'm not the first one to have thought of this. I see some reference on the web site for PicoBSD to the idea of making a sort of mini X desktop with a browser and what not, has anyone tried making _just_ an X terminal this way? --------------msFCBA4947814E8CB5D8B8B3A2 Content-Type: application/x-pkcs7-signature; name="smime.p7s" Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="smime.p7s" Content-Description: S/MIME Cryptographic Signature MIIIcAYJKoZIhvcNAQcCoIIIYTCCCF0CAQExCzAJBgUrDgMCGgUAMAsGCSqGSIb3DQEHAaCC BhwwggLbMIICRKADAgECAgMBQOowDQYJKoZIhvcNAQEEBQAwgbkxCzAJBgNVBAYTAlpBMRUw EwYDVQQIEwxXZXN0ZXJuIENhcGUxFDASBgNVBAcTC0R1cmJhbnZpbGxlMRowGAYDVQQKExFU aGF3dGUgQ29uc3VsdGluZzEpMCcGA1UECxMgVGhhd3RlIFBGIFJTQSBJSyAxOTk4LjkuMTYg MTc6NTUxNjA0BgNVBAMTLVRoYXd0ZSBQZXJzb25hbCBGcmVlbWFpbCBSU0EgSXNzdWVyIDE5 OTguOS4xNjAeFw05OTA4MTgxNzAxMzFaFw0wMDA4MTcxNzAxMzFaMFwxDjAMBgNVBAQTBVNh eWVyMREwDwYDVQQqEwhOaWNob2xhczEXMBUGA1UEAxMOTmljaG9sYXMgU2F5ZXIxHjAcBgkq hkiG9w0BCQEWD25zYXllckBzZnR3LmNvbTCBnzANBgkqhkiG9w0BAQEFAAOBjQAwgYkCgYEA zcenl3wCRQ4jtj4fFkMbXSt3zLHjqoJQrphXIHLz5Jc5DgLnxNjcNOpOT+I2kRn+1DB0oz23 0fX+M0mDYE6zVNYETeEaO5Kbn9hBGcodsSUbsDPnzeDP5DzIiwgjXQaMbO6QIwwbg01+PEiD zIk40Dg4DkVSurlMilN7vD8T88UCAwEAAaNNMEswGgYDVR0RBBMwEYEPbnNheWVyQHNmdHcu Y29tMAwGA1UdEwEB/wQCMAAwHwYDVR0jBBgwFoAU/j5gnGuMD7DYM8bKxh5YsHE4teAwDQYJ KoZIhvcNAQEEBQADgYEAdqMzGTDJwhYq9MeCTP1CC8eDUVcBZ1QMvPqhzS23qNP+lIvVuVjB cfRJWrzDmYHL4ILaaeD6pHASkZtoBW2cDSC5bi2hu0dtwTAMHBDx0i573mUNGa0cWxFWHrA1 g7kOc8lY7TV9owLWIxFmNFxBPZyy0MPiPL7aFLBQH0I7o1QwggM5MIICoqADAgECAgEKMA0G CSqGSIb3DQEBBAUAMIHRMQswCQYDVQQGEwJaQTEVMBMGA1UECBMMV2VzdGVybiBDYXBlMRIw EAYDVQQHEwlDYXBlIFRvd24xGjAYBgNVBAoTEVRoYXd0ZSBDb25zdWx0aW5nMSgwJgYDVQQL Ex9DZXJ0aWZpY2F0aW9uIFNlcnZpY2VzIERpdmlzaW9uMSQwIgYDVQQDExtUaGF3dGUgUGVy c29uYWwgRnJlZW1haWwgQ0ExKzApBgkqhkiG9w0BCQEWHHBlcnNvbmFsLWZyZWVtYWlsQHRo YXd0ZS5jb20wHhcNOTgwOTE2MTc1NTM0WhcNMDAwOTE1MTc1NTM0WjCBuTELMAkGA1UEBhMC WkExFTATBgNVBAgTDFdlc3Rlcm4gQ2FwZTEUMBIGA1UEBxMLRHVyYmFudmlsbGUxGjAYBgNV BAoTEVRoYXd0ZSBDb25zdWx0aW5nMSkwJwYDVQQLEyBUaGF3dGUgUEYgUlNBIElLIDE5OTgu OS4xNiAxNzo1NTE2MDQGA1UEAxMtVGhhd3RlIFBlcnNvbmFsIEZyZWVtYWlsIFJTQSBJc3N1 ZXIgMTk5OC45LjE2MIGfMA0GCSqGSIb3DQEBAQUAA4GNADCBiQKBgQDEpeXU1NBfCALuByF9 JL+ra44e6yAHAhWEa4/QkyQfG53uaLK5LE/pk2cXEBceoflDQSO5MKp2l7vz5/2BwLUxi/am UCZU8pUo6xmkHpcesOK4m8EEmjLQPAlsT+Q1T/B2vwATA09FCGDz/LTQkAGKEsmcun9S6iqT NTY8POQ1LwIDAQABozcwNTASBgNVHRMBAf8ECDAGAQH/AgEAMB8GA1UdIwQYMBaAFHJJwnM0 xlX0C3ZygX539IfnxrIOMA0GCSqGSIb3DQEBBAUAA4GBACzHgh8BQz4Hj+5pXKlkgvjAlq2T K8ubUNdAmoHCuqZ2nTyVQNxVweFVgnmrCimm1QzhVyg+j/m71d8Nk1iqWy2LjzPk3VgVNXZy FSm9QvRakgt3X50n25otThuCBo7SjVa7ld7bDGUF3pWeAt1TF76+/GvDGiJ6FCthvcKfXnpa MYICHDCCAhgCAQEwgcEwgbkxCzAJBgNVBAYTAlpBMRUwEwYDVQQIEwxXZXN0ZXJuIENhcGUx FDASBgNVBAcTC0R1cmJhbnZpbGxlMRowGAYDVQQKExFUaGF3dGUgQ29uc3VsdGluZzEpMCcG A1UECxMgVGhhd3RlIFBGIFJTQSBJSyAxOTk4LjkuMTYgMTc6NTUxNjA0BgNVBAMTLVRoYXd0 ZSBQZXJzb25hbCBGcmVlbWFpbCBSU0EgSXNzdWVyIDE5OTguOS4xNgIDAUDqMAkGBSsOAwIa BQCggbEwGAYJKoZIhvcNAQkDMQsGCSqGSIb3DQEHATAcBgkqhkiG9w0BCQUxDxcNOTkwOTIw MTkzMDEwWjAjBgkqhkiG9w0BCQQxFgQUX6ghqGz74fv38pM8JszJChjmdZUwUgYJKoZIhvcN AQkPMUUwQzAKBggqhkiG9w0DBzAOBggqhkiG9w0DAgICAIAwBwYFKw4DAgcwDQYIKoZIhvcN AwICAUAwDQYIKoZIhvcNAwICASgwDQYJKoZIhvcNAQEBBQAEgYBKRPxy/3v9XLXOYUwh5P5z juvjSZqttvyCqT/rCyC46zj5IMBIrakj/QtfqmOX8yLYRWTlK4e0DAG0ey1ocBDzS59MJuZs q3jFVqRERKlrU/Sz0BioStwMYorDoQuFnnAP5IBMLtHMYWkyhaiXjUaovGBVkqhWS57p8qQu 1iXI3A== --------------msFCBA4947814E8CB5D8B8B3A2-- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-small" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-small Mon Sep 20 12:54:50 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-small@freebsd.org Received: from labinfo.iet.unipi.it (labinfo.iet.unipi.it [131.114.9.5]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 2CE0215199; Mon, 20 Sep 1999 12:54:45 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from luigi@labinfo.iet.unipi.it) Received: from localhost (luigi@localhost) by labinfo.iet.unipi.it (8.6.5/8.6.5) id TAA09163; Mon, 20 Sep 1999 19:12:53 +0200 From: Luigi Rizzo Message-Id: <199909201712.TAA09163@labinfo.iet.unipi.it> Subject: Re: I'm sure I'm not the first... It should be able to support multiple ISPs. The configuration includes dial in modem board and separate Ethernet interfaces to each ISP router. This brings up many interesting issues if one want to completely isolate the multiple user-ISP groups. 1. If I am a dial in user of ISPx then my packet should be sent out to ISPx router. One option is using IPF on the dial in I/F to forward its packets. But this seems to be very inefficient(with lots of users there will be so many filters to parse for each packet!!!) 2. ISPx should get RIP updates with host routes for only its own users, and not the users of another ISP! I couldn't find any such functionality in RIP. 3. I should do proxy arp on a particular Ethernet for only the dial in users belonging to the ISP owning that eth intf. and so on.. Well has anyone tried similar implementation? Any ideas on how to go about doing this? I have solutions for some problems on a problem by problem basis which doesn't seem to be very elegant. Like I can catch the user packets in the kernel ppp code and send them directly out to the corresponding ISPs interface. thanks -suvrat email: suvrat@utstar.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-small" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-small Fri Sep 24 6: 4:18 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-small@freebsd.org Received: from mail0.iij.ad.jp (mail0.iij.ad.jp [202.232.2.113]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 63B6614D9E for ; Fri, 24 Sep 1999 06:04:06 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from noma@moon.coder.co.jp) Received: from uucp3.iij.ad.jp (uucp3.iij.ad.jp [202.232.2.203]) by mail0.iij.ad.jp (8.8.8/3.7W-MAIL) with SMTP id WAA16781 for ; Fri, 24 Sep 1999 22:03:56 +0900 (JST) Received: (from uucp@localhost) by uucp3.iij.ad.jp (8.6.12+2.4W/3.3W9-UUCP) with UUCP id WAA04065 for freebsd-small@freebsd.org; Fri, 24 Sep 1999 22:03:56 +0900 Received: from moon.coder.co.jp (moon.coder.co.jp [192.168.1.3]) by cdgw.coder.co.jp (8.8.8/3.6W-uucp) with ESMTP id VAA11646 for ; Fri, 24 Sep 1999 21:51:10 +0900 (JST) Received: (from noma@localhost) by moon.coder.co.jp (8.8.8/3.6W03/25/99) id VAA29301; Fri, 24 Sep 1999 21:51:09 +0900 (JST) Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 21:51:09 +0900 (JST) From: Izumi Noma Message-Id: <199909241251.VAA29301@moon.coder.co.jp> To: freebsd-small@freebsd.org Sender: owner-freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG subscribe freebsd-small To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-small" in the body of the message
