I tried to get the specs of the CMD649 chipset but they are not available at the manufacturer's site ( www.cmd.com). I took the risk because: 1- I believe bus mastering works on the AS200 (AHA, Tulip, etc.). 2- This board is supposed to work on Intel boards even without DMA support from the chipset. I cannot confirm the claim as I don't have such a motherboard. 3- Other known working device drivers do not seem different between platforms. The board has an EPROM and I suppose its code is not being executed; maybe it is necessary. I could make the disk work using an IDE ISA adapter, the device driver can see only 16 GBytes, the disk has 60Gbytes. > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG > [mailto:owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG]On Behalf Of Wilko Bulte > Sent: Monday, December 18, 2000 18:37 > To: Sergio Jachtchenco > Cc: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org > Subject: Re: IDE CMD 649 and AS200-233 > > > On Mon, Dec 18, 2000 at 04:59:52PM -0500, Sergio Jachtchenco wrote: > > I could be completely offtrack here, but does bus master ISA dma work on > Alpha in the first place? > > Drew? Did you > ever try on -current after Doug's busspace cleanup? I detailed all this when I was doing it, something like 12 months ago. Around the same time that the sym driver wasn't working on the second hose, I tried an ISA soundcard (and the floppy driver) - both didn't work on the DS20. I also tried a PCI soundcard on the second hose, and that didn't work either. I have no idea whether that state of affairs still persists; David has the DS20 now, and I have no idea whether it's available for testing. You had me paranoid something was recently broken. I think you just got screwed by a bad combo of hardware you were testing. Sound didn't really work on alpha until rather recently (6-9 mo?) Until we fix PCI to do this for you, you will not be able > to use this (or probably any other) ATA controller in this system. > Thanks Mike. I do not know the functionality of SRM but I guess that, besides other functions, it should scan for PCI devices, get the information of each device and allocate all the necessary resources. Andrew Gallatin [gallatin@cs.duke.edu] said he has a Promise adapter working on a Miata, so at least the Miata's SRM can allocate the resources. Do you think it has a database for all "known" adapters, or at least a class of adapters? And this database would be different for different Alpha models? Supposing that is the case, what would be the solution? We cannot change the SRM, so something else has to recognize and allocate the resources. Is there already any similar code in the kernel? If somebody knows it, could you point it to me? I might be able to make these modifications. Thanks to everybody. Sergio. I installed successfully, but when trying to boot I get the following errors:

warning: processor correctable error.

From the archives this seems to be a a problem with the boot loader for 4.1 release.
If this is so is it corrected in the 4.2 release, ISO image which I am dowloading now.

Stability in X is not there the machine has locked up hard when trying to build xemacs from ports collection while opening other programs-xv, any thoughts on stability in X would be welcome. -Mel To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Tue Dec 19 9: 3:51 2000 From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Dec 19 09:03:49 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from duke.cs.duke.edu (duke.cs.duke.edu [152.3.140.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5F34837B400 for ; Tue, 19 Dec 2000 09:03:49 -0800 (PST) Received: from grasshopper.cs.duke.edu (grasshopper.cs.duke.edu [152.3.145.30]) by duke.cs.duke.edu (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id MAA05560; Tue, 19 Dec 2000 12:03:45 -0500 (EST) Received: (from gallatin@localhost) by grasshopper.cs.duke.edu (8.11.1/8.9.1) id eBJH3jQ89705; Tue, 19 Dec 2000 12:03:45 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from gallatin@cs.duke.edu) From: Andrew Gallatin MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Date: Tue, 19 Dec 2000 12:03:45 -0500 (EST) To: mel kravitz Cc: freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: UP1000 install comments In-Reply-To: <3A3F93F0.697B47D8@switchpwr.com> References: <3A3F93F0.697B47D8@switchpwr.com> X-Mailer: VM 6.43 under 20.4 "Emerald" XEmacs Lucid Message-ID: <14911.38077.986177.833682@grasshopper.cs.duke.edu> Sender: owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org mel kravitz writes: > I just installed 4.2-beta (ftp download) on a UP1000, 600 MHZ cpu. From my (limited) experience, I surmise that it's a bit of both. In the case of the AS200, I think that there may be code in SRM to simply *avoid* ATA controllers, in order to prevent wasting resources on the ATA controller in the PCI:ISA bridge. I would expect that if you were to install a different ATA controller, you'd see similar results. You would probably be OK with an ISA ATA controller, but performance would be poor. > Supposing that is the case, what would be the solution? We cannot change the > SRM, so something else has to recognize and allocate the resources. Is there > already any similar code in the kernel? If somebody knows it, could you > point it to me? I might be able to make these modifications. Work is underway to implement this, but it's a fairly slow process. If you really wanted to hack up something in the meantime, you would need to: - determine the I/O-memory mappings for the AS200 (this can be gleaned from the machine-specific sources) - add some code to scan for ATA controllers and configure their base address registers Unfortunately, this is one of those "if you have to ask" kind of questions - talking you through doing it would probably take longer than doing it oneself. Having said that, if you want to take a stab at it yourself, it's not an overwhelmingly difficult project, and you'd learn quite a bit about the Alpha systems and PCI in the process. Sorry for the gloomy picture; hope this helps though. Regards, Mike -- ... every activity meets with opposition, everyone who acts has his rivals and unfortunately opponents also. Actually, after thinking about it more, I seem to remember that Jason Thorpe over in NetBSD runs an AS200 with a Promise Ultra/33 card. So it might be an srm console issue with this card.. Before pulling out all the stops, I'd first try updating the SRM console, and they try a Promise card.. This is just a WAG though. I also ordered a Promise Ultra 66, so in a couple of days I will see if it makes any difference. The old Promise Ultra 33 is kind of hard to find. I installed the CMD card on a Pentium motherboard and I took out the EPROM, just to see if it plays any kind of special trick, but it seems it is honest and just provides the INT19 (boot) service. boot -v displayed the base register plus four other sets. I wonder why the SRM does allocate an IRQ for the card. It does not make much sense to save space for registers and still allocating an IRQ line. The ISA ATA works but the transfer rate is about 20 times slower (compared with the Pentium., used dd to measure it) and besides it cannot access more than 16Gb. So I just dumped it. Case the Promise does not work I'll try to hack the driver or something else to allocate the resources before initialization. It depends on how boring the holidays are going to be... That doesn't help if you want the XF86 version 4.x I can't stand XF86336 because, among other things, the trutype font support sucks on alpha. The truetype servers crash and the fontserver crashes. Even building the font server with Compaq C and running it remotely on a Tru64 box doesn't help... It seems to happen on all recent revs of XFree86-4. I've just grabbed the 4.0.2 sources and I'm working with those. I think it would happen on -stable too. Essentially, the server is reporting ****INVALID MEM ALLOCATION****, attempting to fix things up & failing miserably. It is trying to move things from the region: b: 0x40000000 e: 0x407fffff to 0x80000000 - 0xffffffff and so on; moving things from 0x4....... to 0x8....... This is happening because it is getting confused about the UP1000's AGP bridge: (II) Bus 0: bridge is at (0:0:0), (-1,0,0), BCTRL: 0x00 (VGA_EN is cleared) (II) Bus 0 I/O range: [0] -1 0x00000000 - 0xffffffff (0x0) IX[B] (II) Bus 0 non-prefetchable memory range: [0] -1 0x80000000 - 0xffffffff (0x80000000) MX[B] (II) Bus 0 prefetchable memory range: [0] -1 0x80000000 - 0xffffffff (0x80000000) MX[B] (II) Bus 2: bridge is at (0:1:0), (0,2,2), BCTRL: 0x0e (VGA_EN is set) (II) Bus 2 I/O range: (II) Bus 2 non-prefetchable memory range: (II) Bus 2 prefetchable memory range: I think what is happening is that the !@#$@#$ SRM firmware on this box is configuring the agp bus as bus 2, so it has a PCI bus 0 and an AGP bus 2, but no PCI or AGP bus "1". Then XFree86 comes along and mislabels the video card, claiming that it is at 01:05:0 when it is really at 02:05:0. Things are further confused by the bridge configuration in xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/common/xf86pciBus.c The following patch seems to work nicely, though I have no idea why: --- /usr/project/ari_scratch3/gallatin/xf86/402/xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/common/xf86pciBus.c Fri Dec 8 15:13:35 2000 +++ hw/xfree86/common/xf86pciBus.c Wed Dec 20 17:21:50 2000 @@ -1598,6 +1598,13 @@ get_sun_apb_ranges(PciBus, pcrp); break; } +#ifdef __alpha__ + if (pcrp->pci_vendor == PCI_VENDOR_AMD && + pcrp->pci_device == 0x7007 && + PciBus->secondary == 2) { + PciBus->secondary = 1; + } +#endif /* _alpha_ */ if ((pcrp->pci_command & PCI_CMD_IO_ENABLE) && (pcrp->pci_upper_io_base || pcrp->pci_io_base || pcrp->pci_upper_io_limit || pcrp->pci_io_limit)) { Do you have a good contact at XFree86 who could look into this? It is possible to run this using the Linux ABI module on FreeBSD/alpha, both 4.2-STABLE and 5.0-CURRENT. Note that it will not work on 4.2-RELEASE. It is pretty slow, but it works. (and its just as slow under native linux, so its not my fault ;). It might be useful for bootstrapping a native java build. Download it from: http://www.linuxalpha.compaq.com/java122/download.html To run it, you'll need to: - enable linux_enable in /etc/rc.conf (and load linux.ko if you don't want to reboot) - install linux_base-6.1 from ports - Grab the OpenMotif rpm they point you at on the JDK download page. and install it manually using the same rpm args as the linux base port does. After unpacking the jdk, you'll need to edit the java wrapper to point to /compat/linux/bin/sh instead of /bin/sh. _Optionally_, you'll want to install the compaq math libs for linux. If you don't have these installed, the JIT won't work. You can get these from http://www5.compaq.com/math/download/index.html Pick the right one for your CPU (ev4, ev5, ev6, etc) Follow the link and grab libots. Install these using the same rpm args as the linux base port does. You might end up with a 0 length libcpml.so because they've taken to extracting the shared lib from the static lib (saves download b/w, I guess..). In this case, you might try installing the linux_devtools port and using the linux ld to run this on libcpml.a ((I extracted mine on my native linux/alpha test box): /compat/linux/.../ld -shared -o libcpml_ev5.so -soname libcpml.so -whole-archive libcpml_ev5.a -no-whole-archive -lots After doing all this, install the resulting libcpml_ev5.so and run /compat/linux/sbin/ldconfig. Look in sys/i386/conf/LINT and /etc/rc.firewall. I have no clue as to how to set up a firewall though.. Thank David O'Brien too. David did the bulk of integrating my linux/alpha patches shortly before 4.2-RELEASE. And let's not forget Marcel, who did the MI split and then still put up with is slapping ifdef __alpha__'s into his linulator ;) Drew To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Fri Dec 22 12:44:41 2000 From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Dec 22 12:44:38 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mail.gmx.net (pop.gmx.net [194.221.183.20]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 077E237B402 for ; Fri, 22 Dec 2000 12:44:38 -0800 (PST) Received: (qmail 15801 invoked by uid 0); 22 Dec 2000 20:31:58 -0000 Received: from ppp-62.pm02.hbg.nikoma.de (HELO feldregen) (212.122.132.125) by mail.gmx.net (mail09) with SMTP; 22 Dec 2000 20:31:58 -0000 From: "Klaus Berbach" To: "freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG" Date: Fri, 22 Dec 2000 21:34:37 +0100 Reply-To: "Klaus Berbach" Priority: Normal X-Mailer: PMMail 2000 Professional (2.10.2010) For Windows 2000 (5.0.2195;1) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Subject: HD Booting Problems Message-Id: <20001222204438.077E237B402@hub.freebsd.org> Sender: owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi, it=B4s me again. This time it isn=B4t the CD, it=B4s the Harddisk. After a (well several) reinstall(s) of FreeBSD 4.2 I don=B4t manage to make it bootable anymore from HD. It somehow can=B4t open /boot/loader, though it is installed (checked on VT4 before exiting the install) and it has read an execute rights. For several reasons I had a short break with Linux on that HD (yes, I know, but finally I pay for it now ;). What was a bit strange (was it ?) that FreeBSD refused to boot from CD when I didn=B4t clear the HD before (going nowhere wihtout my init. Rebooting in 15 seconds). This happened during the probing of devices (as soon as the red screen appears). After that I deleted the HD with Linux fdisk and set up new partitions during the FreeBSD install. So I am wondering if the boot failure has something to do with this. I am running an Alphastation500 (SCSI Hardisk) In case it matters, my table: /swap (256M) /tmp (128M) / (1000M) /usr (5000M) /var (3000M) The full message: >>>boot dka0 (boot dka0.0.0.9.0 -flags A) block 0 of dka0.0.0.9.0 is a valid boot block reading 15 blocks from dka0.0.0.9.0 bpptstrap code read in base =3D 14a000, image_start =3D 0, image_bytes =3D 1e00 initializing HWRPB at 2000 initializnig page table at 13c000 initilaizing machine state setting affinity to primary CPU jumping to bootstrap code Loading /boot/loader Cant open file /boot/loader halted CPU 0 halt code =3D 5 HALT instruction executed PC =3D 20000038 >>> To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Fri Dec 22 12:47:43 2000 From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Dec 22 12:47:42 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from duke.cs.duke.edu (duke.cs.duke.edu [152.3.140.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A618237B400 for ; Fri, 22 Dec 2000 12:47:41 -0800 (PST) Received: from grasshopper.cs.duke.edu (grasshopper.cs.duke.edu [152.3.145.30]) by duke.cs.duke.edu (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id PAA02403; Fri, 22 Dec 2000 15:47:41 -0500 (EST) Received: (from gallatin@localhost) by grasshopper.cs.duke.edu (8.11.1/8.9.1) id eBMKlfS99453; Fri, 22 Dec 2000 15:47:41 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from gallatin@cs.duke.edu) From: Andrew Gallatin MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Date: Fri, 22 Dec 2000 15:47:40 -0500 (EST) To: "Klaus Berbach" Cc: "freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG" Subject: Re: HD Booting Problems In-Reply-To: <20001222204438.077E237B402@hub.freebsd.org> References: <20001222204438.077E237B402@hub.freebsd.org> X-Mailer: VM 6.43 under 20.4 "Emerald" XEmacs Lucid Message-ID: <14915.48551.352524.551444@grasshopper.cs.duke.edu> Sender: owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Klaus Berbach writes: > In case it matters, my table: > > /swap (256M) > /tmp (128M) > / (1000M) > /usr (5000M) > /var (3000M) / MUST be first on the disk.
