First, I run a scsi-only system. I have an Intel DK440LX mobo, and it has dual Adaptec scsi busses. I have two cdroms in it right now, one a reader, the other r/w. The configuration wizard wanted me to pick a device in /compat/linux/dev, but none of the ones in there are my cd0 and cd1. I know how to use mknod, but I'm not sure that's the right thing to do for scsi compatibility. Does anyone know. In fact, is there any specific option I should be setting in my kernel config file to support this? I already have COMPAT_LINUX, and (in general) linux stuff runs just dandy, which is why I decided to try this neat toy. Last question: the first time I brought vmware up, it asked me the location of about 5 executeables (I remember that 'less' was one of them). I answered with their correct full path locations, UNTIL I got to one that I didn't recognize, I think it was something like "insmon" I went thru the sources trying to find real hard where this was called out (I grepped for less, and just couldn't find a hit that looked right, although there were a hundred uses of "flawless" all right :-) I can't get any more specific, but anyone recognize this, and know how to react to it? When I start up vmware, it comes up with 5 small windows telling me that it couldn't find an executeable (I wish it would say which one!) I haven't yet got thru the vmware-wizard, because when I couldn't answer the cdrom question, I cancelled it out. If you're talking about the path thing, my path already had first sbin, then bin, then everything else (/usr/bin, /usr/local/bin/ etc etc) so that isn't it. I have linprocfs mounted now right, and I was already using your vmware2 port. This seemed to be your target in the mail messages I saw, was I reading the right message, about the path and linprocfs? It is still asking me about those 5 binaries (and it still won't tell me their names in the error message). This is no longer stopping it from starting up (now that I have linprocfs mounted right) but now, on starting up the cpu in vmware, it immediately panics the vmware (not my kernel, the vmware defines "panics" too) and exits none too gracefully If you need a tester on this, running vmware2 (paid license) and current, I will do that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chuck Robey | Interests include C & Java programming, FreeBSD, chuckr@picnic.mat.net | electronics, communications, and signal processing. I can get vmware to open up the raw disk and display the MBR partitions so I can set ro/rw etc for each one but when it tries to boot the OS in the partition it complains that it is not a raw device. Thanks for the reply. The server is the program that I referred to as failing. I set up a linux box today to verify that the program does work under linux. So, with FreeBSD running the client and Linux running the server, it works. The server program is an RPC daemon process that authenticates via rhosts. I can rsh between the hosts just fine but it seems that the RPC process can not authenticate. So I am pretty sure it is something going on in the linux layer of FreeBSD. I have some more debug info that hopefully will be useful. No, since an executable and any shared libraries it uses have to agree on certain basic things, like what the layout of a struct FILE { } is, the size of an off_t, etc. Linux and BSD have completely different libc's, so you're probably better off installing the linux_devel port and compiling Linux binaries with that. The only case I can think of that would work is a Linux library that calls no external functions and references no data outside the library itself. A library implementing strcpy(), for example, would work. A library doing ANY file access, be it stdio or filedescriptor-based, will fail. -- Dan Nelson dnelson@emsphone.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-emulation" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-emulation Thu Apr 27 8:30:15 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mail.wolves.k12.mo.us (mail.wolves.k12.mo.us [207.160.214.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8382637B5A1 for ; Thu, 27 Apr 2000 08:30:12 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from cdillon@wolves.k12.mo.us) Received: from mail.wolves.k12.mo.us (cdillon@mail.wolves.k12.mo.us [207.160.214.1]) by mail.wolves.k12.mo.us (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id KAA34291; Thu, 27 Apr 2000 10:30:03 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from cdillon@wolves.k12.mo.us) Date: Thu, 27 Apr 2000 10:30:03 -0500 (CDT) From: Chris Dillon To: Chuck Robey Cc: FreeBSD-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Linux emulation In-Reply-To: Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Thu, 27 Apr 2000, Chuck Robey wrote: > I'm still messing around trying to get vmware2 to operate. I didn't softlink any devices by hand, and everything seems to be working fine. I have a physical disk that I already had NT4 Server installed on that I am now running under vmware. To get that to work, I simply set up a "plain disk" with the reported geometry for the drive, like so: ad1: 4112MB [8912/15/63] at ata0-slave using UDMA33 DRIVETYPE IDE CYLINDERS 8912 HEADS 15 SECTORS 63 ACCESS "/dev/ad1" 0 8321840 Notice I used the FreeBSD device, not a linux device. Would vmware know the difference between, for example, /dev/ad1 and /dev/da1? If not, SCSI or IDE devices should work equally well. I'll find out as well once I get this working at home, since I have SCSI disks there. -- Chris Dillon - cdillon@wolves.k12.mo.us - cdillon@inter-linc.net FreeBSD: The fastest and most stable server OS on the planet.
