(From what I can see.) The question is this: What happened to the pnp support in user config in 4.0? The man page pnp(4) is still there, although inaccurate, and from what I've looked though in the past two days, support for pnp configuration at boot seems to have disappeared. What's going on? I have hesitated to bring myself up past 4.0-STABLE (don't feel like messing around much and need stability on this machine), but I am seriously considering it if I need to, to add PnP support. If I went to -current, would PnP be restored? When I added the entry 'controller pnp0' as suggested by the pnp(4) manpage to my kernel config (which seemed strange to me because it was called controller), config said that 'controller' was depreciated and to use device. When I added the entry 'device pnp0', config told me it couldn't find the device pnp. So where has it gone? As far as I can see this is a large inconvenience for a number of people, so can someone please advice what can be done to configure PnP devices from /boot/kernel.conf or by other means at boot? Is there a substitute or other command that can be used in it's place? Was it depreciated? If so, by what? Why was this removed? Etc... etc... Usually this wouldn't be a concern, because I would just let it set itself, and forget it. (Plug'n Pray) However, I am running low on IRQs and need to move some things around; I want to give IRQs to devices that are coming up with 'can't assign resources'... Otherwise I can't get all the devices working due to stupidity in hardware. Some are on-board devices on the ISA side. I was considering to just go out and buy better hardware, but I don't want to give up since, IMHO, I think in most cases the software should be made to run on hardware, not the converse. (Plus, I wanted to get this specific hardware running.) It is a tight fit getting all the peripherals working, but it will fit if I can get the PnP side working. Thanks for helping me, and others who have this same problem, Albert Fields _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Intel makes a dual port 82558-based NIC which works with the fxp driver. I don't know the exact model number offhand. Each port is treated as a seperate interface, i.e. port 1 becomes fxp0 and port 2 becomes fxp1. The guts of a PCI ethernet adapter is basically a single controller chip; multiport cards have two such controller chips connected to a PCI-PCI bridge. So as far as the host is concerned, you have two independent NICs that just happen to be sharing a single board. As far as I know, all of the multiport cards are designed this way. The cheapest multiport card I know of is the D-Link DFE-570TX, which is a quad port card with Intel/DEC 21143 chips. ZNYX also makes dual and quad port cards with the 21143, however they are likely to be more expensive. Both the D-Link and ZNYX cards should work with the dc(4) driver. The Adaptec DuraLAN mutliport cards (dual and quad port) are also supported using the sf(4) (Starfire) driver, however these are fairly expensive: a quad port card will run about $500US. There also exists a dual port Compaq Netelligent card based on the Texas Instruments ThunderLAN chipset, which is supported by the tl(4) driver, however you're only going to find these on the second-hand market or auction sites as they're no longer in production. I mention it just in case you happen to run across one; if you find one cheap, it's worth getting. The best bargain is the D-Link DFE-570TX. It's very cheap and offers decent reliability and performance. -Bill To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Thu Sep 14 4:46:23 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from archive.e-u-a.net (ilm25-44-162.ec.rr.com [24.25.44.162]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B3C6337B43F; Thu, 14 Sep 2000 04:46:14 -0700 (PDT) Received: from e-u-a.net (root@e-u-a.net [24.25.44.162]) by archive.e-u-a.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id HAA08684; Thu, 14 Sep 2000 07:44:57 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from root@e-u-a.net) Date: Thu, 14 Sep 2000 07:44:56 -0400 (EDT) From: Archibald Hive To: hardware@freebsd.org Cc: questions@freebsd.org Subject: Disk/Tape Controller Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hello, I've tried everything that I could find on the freebsd site about floppy tape's. I need a little bit help and assistance in some hardware/smp questions. At the moment, one of our main servers is based on a dual-gigabyte intel 440BX chipset based mainboard. These days we change, we want to swapp over to a new mainboard and new CPUs. The mainboard has been choosen from TYAN, TYAN Thunder 2500-80. I watched out for compatibility reasons not to obtain the Symbios Logic 53C1010 (SCSI-3/160) based board, because SymbiosLogic 53C896 seems to be fully supported. I heard about many problems of using SMP kernel on ServerWorks III HE chipset based boards in spring this year, a lot about problems with i820 and i840 (Carmel) based SMP boards, but that was shortly after the change towards FreeBSD 4.0. Now we have much more ServerWorks III chipsets based mainboards on market as a replacement for the memory demanding server market because of the problems with i820/i840 and ECC RAM or due to the enormous costs of RIMM modules. It seems, that the TYAN Thunder 2500 is one of the best mainboards on market - but has anyone tested it using FBSD? Well, because we ordered such a mainboard and I never got an answer of my posted questions related to this hardware, it seems that I will be on my own when trying the first time to migrate from the old hardware to the new one. At the moment I try to configure a suitable kernel and because we do not already use hardware RAID 5 technology (I have an simple array of RAID 0 bundled drives using vinum, and thats in some cases really slow, maybe due the fact being a software solution), I use simply a main drive from which all bootsrap is done before starting vinum and the array. Well, that's besides that what makes me afraid of swapping over to the new hardware. I read a lot about failures of starting SMP kernel or kernel does not recognize all the hardware although these kind of mainboards all use standard and proofen hardware like intel ether 10/100+ Pro lan chip, LSI/SymbiosLogic 53C896 dual channel LVD SCSI controller, ES 3173 sound chip ... well, only the chipset seems to be the point of problems. Does anybody know, whether this chipset runs with FreeBSD 4.1? I think some PowerEdge solutions based on this chipset and also some Proliance systems. If there is anybody out here who's some experiences, especially in how to avaoid a non starting kernel, please contact me. I think, I will leave SMP facilities first time out to make myself sure, that the system will boot with one of booth 866EB Coppermines. Thanks in advance, Gruss O. Setup was easy: plug into wall socket, connect to PC (parallel port, dunno about USB) and print. tg To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Fri Sep 15 6:41: 9 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from duke.cs.duke.edu (duke.cs.duke.edu [152.3.140.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1E76637B422; Fri, 15 Sep 2000 06:41:06 -0700 (PDT) Received: from grasshopper.cs.duke.edu (grasshopper.cs.duke.edu [152.3.145.30]) by duke.cs.duke.edu (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id JAA08246; Fri, 15 Sep 2000 09:41:05 -0400 (EDT) Received: (from gallatin@localhost) by grasshopper.cs.duke.edu (8.11.0/8.9.1) id e8FDf5p52794; Fri, 15 Sep 2000 09:41:05 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from gallatin@cs.duke.edu) From: Andrew Gallatin MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Date: Fri, 15 Sep 2000 09:41:05 -0400 (EDT) To: Mike Smith Cc: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Subject: Re: TYAN Thunder 2500-80 and FreeBSD 4.1 In-Reply-To: <200009142152.OAA01453@mass.osd.bsdi.com> References: <200009142152.OAA01453@mass.osd.bsdi.com> X-Mailer: VM 6.43 under 20.4 "Emerald" XEmacs Lucid Message-ID: <14786.9781.93048.667682@grasshopper.cs.duke.edu> Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Mike Smith writes: <...> > > It seems, that the > > TYAN Thunder 2500 is one of the best mainboards on market - but has anyone > > tested it using FBSD? > > Yes. I wish there was. 8( I've been looking for a weblog, or some other halfway useful way of chronicling all the stuff I go through in a fashion that doesn't involve lots of time (eg. the RAID pages don't get update as often as they should because it's just too much work) that could be used to feed a database or something like this. I'm also trying to hire/acquire a lab monkey to cover some of this work, but space is a real problem right now, so there'd be nowhere to put them even if I did. In the meantime, I'm sorry that I can't disseminate more of this more effetively. It really bugs me. 8( -- ... every activity meets with opposition, everyone who acts has his rivals and unfortunately opponents also.
