Firewire, is "discovered". It's only money. I expect them to peacefully coexist for quite a while - I doubt that you will be seeing Firewire keyboards, mice, modems, or other relatively low-speed devices; and I suspect that the USB disk drives and Ethernet ports will fade away once Firewire is sufficiently close to ubiquitous and the faster Firewire peripherals approach the cost of the USB versions. -Pat To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Sun Oct 29 0:39:40 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from carbon.laserlab.com (carbon.laserlab.com [63.70.156.197]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F143837B479 for ; Sun, 29 Oct 2000 00:39:37 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from gregb@localhost) by carbon.laserlab.com (8.9.0/8.9.0) id AAA20496 for freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org; Sun, 29 Oct 2000 00:39:36 -0700 (PDT) From: Gregory Benjamin Message-Id: <200010290739.AAA20496@carbon.laserlab.com> Subject: Re: USB ports replacing legacy ports on new machines (fwd) To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Date: Sun, 29 Oct 100 00:39:34 -0700 (PDT) X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL23] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > I thought USB's speed limit was 400kbps. The Firewire standard and implementation (chipsets) lagged USB; but I expect that soon most motherboards will come with both; just like most now come with on-board USB. I'm perfectly willing to admit that I'm probably not following the issue closely enough though... > And of course, until the M$ debuggers support firewire out of the > box, firewire has a significant up-hill battle to fight. Specify the resources in the config file or boot config screen. You'll have to figure out where the ioport lives if its not in the default area. device lnc0 at isa? port 0xn000 irq X drq X Where 'n' is the slot number. The CPU utilization increase will mainly come in the network stack, since it has 6 times the number of packets to deal with for the amount of data transmitted. The per-packet overhead will likely get (mostly) lost in the cost of copying the data from userland into the kernel and vice versa, though. Checksumming is another thing that'll cost CPU cycles if you don't have checksum offloading.
