To be able to load soundfonts for playing MIDIs, you need to install the
AWE utilities ported sometime back by Randall Hopper.  Go to:

        http://www.ipass.net/~dbhopper/aa8vb/awedrv/

to get what you need...  I don't know why X11amp, etc. aren't working for
you.  Works fine here...  If you could perhaps be more specific about how
it's 'not working' we may be able to figure something out.  Is the X11amp
you're running a Linux binary, by chance?  If so, make sure the linux
kld is loaded first.  Just a thought...
