I have an opportunity to create a FreeBSD mirror ftp site. I have both good channel and over 16G of disk space. Is it possible to mirror, say, only recent releng_4 stable + distfiles, plus maybe CERT advisories, and avoid mirroring all the mail archives? Let me clarify the situation a little bit. First of all, most mirrors are located (to my knowledge) in Moscow and nearby. Obviously, this is not the only city in Russia. Here in Novosibirsk there's only one official BSD mirror, vell.nsc.ru, which is, in fact, OpenBSD one. I can fetch most of the ports from there (for instance), but this is really not the perfect (and desired) situation. By mailing me your traceroute output, you've actually proven that Moscow mirrors are not quite acceptable for most part of the country (at least from geographical positions). By the way, I did not say that I propose inet.ssc.nsu.ru as mirror host. Moreover, this is not true: I simply do my email here :) Possible mirror site will be uni.nsu.ru. Second, NSU is about to notably increate its bandwidth, so your statistics is very likely to become out of date soon. Third, even now, I'm able to cvsup from cvsup.freebsd.org (!) without any trouble/connection losses. While it could be rather slow during certain time periods during the day, it does indeed show pretty good speed during others. By creating a mirror here, in Novosibirsk State University, I assume we'll help a lot of people devoted to FreeBSD not to overload their (and eventually your) channels, saving them both time and money. Finally, I don't see how creating a new mirror would not benefit the whole FreeBSD community. What's the problem with new mirror? I actually feel a bit, uhm, surprised and even frustrated (?) by your response. This is definitely not the feedback I seeked and looked forward to. -- With all due respect, sincerely, Alexey Dokuchaev aka DAN Fe On Sun, 17 Dec 2000, Igor Timkin wrote: > There are several full FreeBSD mirror in Russia. > What's you mean `good channel' ? > traceroute to inet.ssc.nsu.ru (62.76.110.12), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets > 1 gw-sovam (194.186.254.22) 0.805 ms 0.807 ms 0.415 ms > 2 gamma-lgw.Moscow.ST.NET (194.186.0.29) 1.408 ms 1.261 ms 1.303 ms > 3 cisco13.Moscow.ST.NET (194.186.157.238) 2.506 ms 2.291 ms 2.872 ms > 4 MSK-M9-RBNet-1.RBNet.ru (193.232.244.32) 6.857 ms 24.383 ms 4.092 ms > 5 MSK-M10-RBNet-1.RBNet.ru (195.209.14.158) 6.310 ms 5.069 ms 7.874 ms > 6 NSK-TCMS8-RBNet-1.RBNet.ru (195.209.14.10) 163.741 ms 156.099 ms 137.025 ms > 7 TCMS8-RBNet-2M.nsu.ru (193.124.208.17) 222.453 ms 141.862 ms 198.923 ms > 8 NSU-TCMS8-2M.nsu.ru (193.124.208.29) 211.410 ms 429.586 ms * > 9 transit.nsu.ru (193.124.215.19) 179.742 ms 164.577 ms 859.132 ms > 10 linux.ssc.nsu.ru (193.124.219.91) 223.613 ms 235.219 ms 261.808 ms > 11 inet.ssc.nsu.ru (62.76.110.12) 194.399 ms 249.712 ms * > > ping -s 1400 -c 50 -q inet.ssc.nsu.ru > PING inet.ssc.nsu.ru (62.76.110.12): 1400 data bytes > > --- inet.ssc.nsu.ru ping statistics --- > 50 packets transmitted, 42 packets received, 16% packet loss > round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 206.313/306.236/457.806/55.225 ms > > Alexey Dokuchaev writes: > > > > Hello! > > > > Several days ago I'd written you the following message, and have not > > received any response so far. Just went over the web site looking for the most appropriate recipient for this email. I downloaded the iso image for the 4.2 release, i386 architecture, from the main FTP site (ftp.freebsd.org). I also downloaded the CHECKSUM.MD5 file and compared the checksum for the 4.2-install.iso file with the one i got after running md5sum on the downloaded file. The cheksums are different, although both files are 668108800 bytes (my local copy and the one in the server) Could it be that the CHECKSUM.MD5 file is outdated? Thanks in advance for your reply. PS: if you think you're not the appropriate recipent for this request, please feel free to forward this message. Or perhaps point me to someone else?
