The responses to Cliff Rowley's question are somewhat disappointing. Cliff has posted many times to this list (I counted 7 in June). Even if you didn't know that, and even if you didn't know that the content of at least _some_ of his postings concerned JDK 1.2.2, wouldn't it logically make sense that he is referring to JDK1.2.2? JDK1.1.8 and the Blackdown 1.2.2 are already ports! Also, did I miss an announcement? Was patchset 9 declared 'beta', or has patchset 10 been released? (as beta? if so, I need to update from 9). I haven't seen many complaints about patchset 9 as alpha/beta, and a 'port' would entice more testers, so I think that Cliff's question makes sense. If not, I'd like to make a start on one... Yes, I have some ambitions in this area :). I'd hoped to resolve this faster, but things haven't quite worked out that way so far. To do a source code based JDK 1.2.2 port you need to do something similar to the WordPerfect port where you require people to download the source code and patches manually (thus complying with the SCSL) and then have the build commence from there. Its the compliance with the SCSL I'm trying to nail down 100% at the moment since there is no way I want to be submitting a port for inclusion in FreeBSD that potentially leaves them open to any legal ramifications. A binary port is an entirely different kettle of fish since it involves getting permission from Sun, etc. -- Greg Lewis glewis@trc.adelaide.edu.au Computing Officer +61 8 8303 5083 Teletraffic Research Centre To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Mon Jul 10 17:38:59 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au (ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au [129.127.246.5]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4653E37B5F3 for ; Mon, 10 Jul 2000 17:38:56 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from glewis@ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au) Received: (from glewis@localhost) by ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au (8.9.3/8.9.3) id KAA27008; Tue, 11 Jul 2000 10:08:50 +0930 (CST) (envelope-from glewis) From: Greg Lewis Message-Id: <200007110038.KAA27008@ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au> Subject: Re: Cliff Rowley's 'Port...' question In-Reply-To: <20000710221853.82945.qmail@hotmail.com> from John Daniels at "Jul 10, 2000 06:18:53 pm" To: John Daniels Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 10:08:50 +0930 (CST) Cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL70 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org John Daniels wrote: > >What version are you referring to ? That would be a "No" on both counts :). > I haven't seen many complaints about patchset 9 as alpha/beta, and a 'port' > would entice more testers, so I think that Cliff's question makes sense. The main issue with patchset 9 was the i18n business which has hopefully been sorted out with major help from the Japanese FreeBSD Java users (arigato!). This will naturally appear in patchset 10 as will some work on fixing up the Java Sound implementation from Rob Furphy. I agree that a source code based port would be useful at this point (see my previous posting). -- Greg Lewis glewis@trc.adelaide.edu.au Computing Officer +61 8 8303 5083 Teletraffic Research Centre To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Mon Jul 10 21:33:42 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mail.xmission.com (mail.xmission.com [198.60.22.22]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6858437BC0B for ; Mon, 10 Jul 2000 21:33:38 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from dholland@xmission.com) Received: from [204.228.142.205] (helo=xmission.com) by mail.xmission.com with esmtp (Exim 3.03 #3) id 13Brjk-0001eW-00 for freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG; Mon, 10 Jul 2000 22:33:36 -0600 Message-ID: <396AA4F5.23F755F2@xmission.com> Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 22:39:17 -0600 From: David Holland X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.73 [en] (X11; I; FreeBSD 4.0-20000708-STABLE i386) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: JDK1.2.2 Alpha(v9), JBuilder35, and JITs... The problems look like they may be with the respective JIT's rather than the JDK port, but I could be wrong. -- Greg Lewis glewis@trc.adelaide.edu.au Computing Officer +61 8 8303 5083 Teletraffic Research Centre To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Mon Jul 10 22:26:21 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mail.xmission.com (mail.xmission.com [198.60.22.22]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 34C7537BCB7 for ; Mon, 10 Jul 2000 22:26:15 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from dholland@xmission.com) Received: from [204.228.142.205] (helo=xmission.com) by mail.xmission.com with esmtp (Exim 3.03 #3) id 13BsYa-0000fx-00; Mon, 10 Jul 2000 23:26:08 -0600 Message-ID: <396AB141.610ABC44@xmission.com> Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 23:31:45 -0600 From: David Holland X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.73 [en] (X11; I; FreeBSD 4.0-20000708-STABLE i386) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Greg Lewis Cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: JDK1.2.2 Alpha(v9), JBuilder35, and JITs... But when I tried to use it, i.e. java -Xdebug -Xnoagent -Djava.compiler=NONE -Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,address=9123,suspend=n HelloWorld I get: Can't load "libjdwp.so", because Shared object "libjdwp.so" not found Could not create the Java virtual machine. Ok, so I copied libjdwp.so from the linux-jdk1.2.2 directory as well. Next it was libdl.so (finally discovered that this is part of glib) so I installed linux_devtools-6.1 Still having difficulty - for some reason libdl.so would still not get loaded {even though I added /lib to /compat/linux/etc/ld.so.conf and rebooted} Going for brute force now, I manually copied each linux lib asked for into jdk1.2.2/jre/lib/i386/ directory until I got to ld-linux.so.2 at which point the above gives me a bus error... I am using FreeBSD4.0 (7/8Snap) and XFree86 4.0 and the instructions from http://web.inter.nl.net/users/kjkoster/java/index.html and Greg's FAQ. Any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated. PS. To my suprise, JBuilder will run with the linux_jdk and linux javacomp jit {but it is slower than the native jdk with no jit}. And while I can run HelloWorld from the prompt as above with linux-jdk, I can't do it in JBuilder yet perhaps because it is using address=asimov.solaria.org:9123 and asimov.solaria.org isn't in my local dns yet. PS2: Enhydra4 Enterprise seems to work great with native jdk1.2.2 so far. That won't work -- the FreeBSD native JDK can't use Linux shared libraries. The information in the FAQ for this particular question was only put there based on what folk on freebsd-java had said worked for them, I haven't actually tried to use JBuilder myself :(. > Going for brute force now, I manually copied each linux lib asked for > into jdk1.2.2/jre/lib/i386/ directory until I got to ld-linux.so.2 at > which point the above gives me > a bus error... See above. You might try creating some "blank" shared libraries and giving them the appropriate names -- this may or may not work depending on how much the native libraries are used. Maybe the other folk who are actually using JBuilder have some better suggestions? > PS. It shouldn't surprise you that you can run things using the Linux JDK under emulation. On NT this works great for debuging Servlets and EJBs inside of BEA's Application Server. When you run JBuilder on 3.5 with linux emulation, and you type a class: i.e. System. Does the popup class browser show correctly for you? For me with both the linux-jdk and native, I do get an undecorated window, but it appears under JBuilder instead of on top of it - and it seems to have a redraw problem in that I don't notice content painting until I close it with escape. This seems to be independant of window manager, i.e. twm, windowmaker, and sawmill. When you pull up the file menu, does it seem to have a redraw problem? (mine does with linux-jdk and native with out tya jit). I don't yet understand how to build using openmotif instead of lesstif - since the ALT_MOTIF_DIR variable in the buildscript points to the same directory for both - uninstall lesstif? Particularly since I have seen repaint problems with one of my own applications too. Have a look at http://erlecom.nl.eu.org/~dutchman/index.html Click on "WSIM Client Application" and follow instructions (basically, download iWSIM.zip, unzip it and java -jar iWSIM.jar) In order to run it under the FreeBSD port (patchset 9, FreeBSD 4.0), I have to resize the window to force repaints. The application responds when I blindly take a stab at where the buttons and menues are supposed to be, so it is alive in a sense. There are other paint problems reported by FreeBSD 4.0 users, so my wild guess is that it's something with the XFree86 version. I'm away from my home, so I cannot give version numbers. Kees Jan PS. Haven't had much time for the JDK port. Sorry about that. *sigh* ================================================= TV is the worst of both worlds. Ok, with a bit more research... With the official Solaris releases: jpda.jar, libjdwp.so, dt.jar and libdt_socket.so are all part of JDK 1.3, but are _not_ part of JDK 1.2.2. And, in particular, they are not part of the JDK 1.2.2 source code we currently have access to under the SCSL. Now, the Blackdown folk, who have access to the JDK 1.3 source code, have obviously included these libraries and jars into the Linux JDK they have released. I've just sucked down the JDK 1.3 Beta source which is available under the SCSL, and (after a _very_ brief look) it appears as though it may include the appropriate code for building the necessary thingies. We might be able to graft this code into the FreeBSD native JDK but I'll need to have a better look at this when I have time to be sure. -- Greg Lewis glewis@trc.adelaide.edu.au Computing Officer +61 8 8303 5083 Teletraffic Research Centre To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Wed Jul 12 18:46:28 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from smtprch1.nortel.com (smtprch1.nortelnetworks.com [192.135.215.14]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4CCEE37BDB7 for ; Wed, 12 Jul 2000 18:46:20 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from malachai@iname.com) Received: from zrchb213.us.nortel.com (actually zrchb213) by smtprch1.nortel.com; Wed, 12 Jul 2000 20:38:44 -0500 Received: from nhmbd14.us.nortel.com ([47.120.192.112]) by zrchb213.us.nortel.com with SMTP (Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service Version 5.5.2650.21) id NQCKWG1G; Wed, 12 Jul 2000 20:41:18 -0500 Received: from cs163.humb.nt.com (nhmbn472.us.nortel.com [47.100.194.163]) by nhmbd14.us.nortel.com with SMTP (Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service Version 5.5.2650.21) id 3Y6LPR6J; Wed, 12 Jul 2000 21:41:23 -0400 Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 21:40:04 -0400 X-Sybari-Space: 00000000 00000000 00000000 From: Shawn Halpenny To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: jdk-1.1.8 & 4.0-STABLE Message-ID: <20000712214003.A20234@cs163.humb.nt.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2i Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org A couple weeks ago I install jdk-1.1.8 from ports and it all works fine. However, note that Rob wasn't seeing David's repaint problems with JBuilder (FreeBSD 3.5 vs. FreeBSD 4.0 from memory). -- Greg Lewis glewis@trc.adelaide.edu.au Computing Officer +61 8 8303 5083 Teletraffic Research Centre To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Wed Jul 12 19:42: 0 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au (ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au [129.127.246.5]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 94EF037B67C for ; Wed, 12 Jul 2000 19:41:56 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from glewis@ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au) Received: (from glewis@localhost) by ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au (8.9.3/8.9.3) id MAA41245; Thu, 13 Jul 2000 12:11:50 +0930 (CST) (envelope-from glewis) Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 12:11:49 +0930 From: Greg Lewis To: Shawn Halpenny Cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: jdk-1.1.8 & 4.0-STABLE Message-ID: <20000713121149.A40774@ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au> References: <20000712214003.A20234@cs163.humb.nt.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 1.0.1i In-Reply-To: <20000712214003.A20234@cs163.humb.nt.com>; from malachai@iname.com on Wed, Jul 12, 2000 at 09:40:04PM -0400 Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Wed, Jul 12, 2000 at 09:40:04PM -0400, Shawn Halpenny wrote: > A couple weeks ago I install jdk-1.1.8 from ports and it all works fine. From memory, there have been changes to the dynamic linker recently. That would be the first thing I'd try reverting to see if you can narrow down the problem. -- Greg Lewis glewis@trc.adelaide.edu.au Computing Officer +61 8 8303 5083 Teletraffic Research Centre To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Fri Jul 14 2:13:23 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from hermes.research.kpn.com (hermes.research.kpn.com [139.63.192.8]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5C2FC37B63D for ; Fri, 14 Jul 2000 02:13:18 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from K.J.Koster@kpn.com) Received: from l04.research.kpn.com (l04.research.kpn.com [139.63.192.204]) by research.kpn.com (PMDF V5.2-31 #42699) with ESMTP id <01JRR77YDB6G00018T@research.kpn.com> for freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG; Fri, 14 Jul 2000 11:13:07 +0200 Received: by l04.research.kpn.com with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2650.21) id <3G58KNR9>; Fri, 14 Jul 2000 11:13:07 +0100 Content-return: allowed Date: Fri, 14 Jul 2000 11:12:59 +0100 From: "Koster, K.J." Not a lot from memory. If we can confirm that it is a 3.x vs. 4.x issue then that should make it possible to track down by comparing execution on the two different versions of FreeBSD. -- Greg Lewis glewis@trc.adelaide.edu.au Computing Officer +61 8 8303 5083 Teletraffic Research Centre To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Sat Jul 15 20:30:49 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from ns.yogotech.com (ns.yogotech.com [206.127.123.66]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1A74337B607 for ; Sat, 15 Jul 2000 20:30:45 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from nate@yogotech.com) Received: from nomad.yogotech.com (nomad.yogotech.com [206.127.123.131]) by ns.yogotech.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id VAA17905; Sat, 15 Jul 2000 21:30:44 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from nate@nomad.yogotech.com) Received: (from nate@localhost) by nomad.yogotech.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) id VAA03276; Sat, 15 Jul 2000 21:30:40 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from nate) Date: Sat, 15 Jul 2000 21:30:40 -0600 (MDT) Message-Id: <200007160330.VAA03276@nomad.yogotech.com> From: Nate Williams MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit To: Edward Wolpert Cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Native threads with Java 1.2.2 port In-Reply-To: References: X-Mailer: VM 6.34 under 19.16 "Lille" XEmacs Lucid Reply-To: nate@yogotech.com (Nate Williams) Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > I was wondering if people were looking at native threads support in > the Java 1.2.2 port. Since FreeBSD has no kernel threads available 'out of the box', there are no advantages to the existing threads package over the internal green threads implementation. Green threads are optimized for the JDK, so are more effecient. Nate To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message
