Thanks in advance! Rick- This is a classic irq problem :) 1) change the ed entry in your kernel to read device ed 2) change the pcic entry in your kernel to be just # PCMCIA support device card device pcic0 at isa? This will put the pcic in polling mode and will free up an irq. 3) Change the entry in /etc/rc.conf to be (using DHCP as an example) pccard_ifconfig="DHCP" and not ifconfig_ed0="DHCP" 4) Make sure that you are really using /etc/pccard.conf and not the default version (/etc/pccard.conf.sample for 4.0-RELEASE or /etc/defaults/pccard.conf for a recent -STABLE and soon to be 4.1-RELEASE). You can set this by adding pccard_conf="/etc/pccard.conf" in /etc/rc.conf. This is only needed if you are hacking on a customized version. 5) Figure out what your free irq's are. Often IRQ 9 or 3 are loose. Don't have 10 in the irq line of /etc/pccard.conf if it is not really free. The irq line there should only contain known free irqs. Hope this helps. It has the ESS Technology Maestro 2E Audio controlloer in it. After a search of the archives, it looks like it isn't supported under 4.0, however, the latest artical I found talking about it was Feb 2000. So, I'm hoping that progress has been made since then. :) Anyway, I've defined device pcm0 device sbc0 in my Kernel config, and I've attached the output of a dmesg. Is it possible to get audio working? If so how? Thanks for any help. This question was asked recently on this list (last month) and that was were the status was last at. Here's what I found out from the discussion last month. Garrett Rooney pointed out that there is a linux driver at : http://www.zabbo.net/maestro/ Sean O'Connell brought up that there is mixer only code at : http://www.hut.fi/~will/freebsd-essm2-mixer.tar.gz and that it works with this fix : --- --- maestro.c.orig Thu Feb 24 13:25:42 2000 +++ maestro.c Sun Jun 11 00:54:21 2000 @@ -146,7 +146,7 @@ return ENXIO; done: - codec = ac97_create(dev, sc, essm_rdcodec, essm_wrcodec); + codec = ac97_create(dev, sc, NULL, essm_rdcodec, essm_wrcodec); if (codec == NULL) { device_printf(dev, "cannot create ac97 instance\n"); return ENXIO; --- The best news however was from Taku YAMAMOTO who wrote : "By the way, recently I started to write the driver for ESS Maestro series. If the PCIC controller gets detected (you can see it in vty1, IIRC) then you probably have an irq conflict. Try eliminating any unnecessary drivers from the boot kernel and changing the irq for pcic and the card's driver. Unfortunately, I believe you can't set the pcic controller in polling mode through sysinstall. Can somebody verify this? -past To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Fri Jul 14 2:29:24 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from flood.ping.uio.no (flood.ping.uio.no [129.240.78.31]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 165C937C2B4 for ; Fri, 14 Jul 2000 02:29:19 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from des@flood.ping.uio.no) Received: (from des@localhost) by flood.ping.uio.no (8.9.3/8.9.3) id LAA97289; Fri, 14 Jul 2000 11:29:15 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from des@flood.ping.uio.no) To: past@netmode.ntua.gr Cc: freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: 3Com Megahertz 3CCFE574BT References: <20000714120408.D6921@netmode.ece.ntua.gr> From: Dag-Erling Smorgrav Date: 14 Jul 2000 11:29:14 +0200 In-Reply-To: Panagiotis Astithas's message of "Fri, 14 Jul 2000 12:04:08 +0300" Message-ID: Lines: 15 User-Agent: Gnus/5.0802 (Gnus v5.8.2) Emacs/20.4 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Panagiotis Astithas writes: > If the PCIC controller gets detected (you can see it in vty1, IIRC) then > you probably have an irq conflict. The ep0 driver (which seems to be the correct driver for the 574BT, from my reading of pccard.conf) isn't listed at all... userconfig lists cs0, ed0, fe0, ie0, le0, lnc0 and sn0 under 'Network Devices'. So it seems that the ep driver is built-in. Try moving thc pcic from irq 10 to something else that is free. If you have only one IDE controller, irq 15 is a good candidate. Better yet, try disabling the second IDE controller altogether (I'm not sure if this is possible, though). What's the procedure for resolving this? : Arun- Is your Inspiron basically set up? I would stongly recommend doing the following: 1) change the pcic entry in you kernel to device card device pcic0 at isa? this will force the pcic into polling mode and free up irq 10. 2) Chances are irq 3 is free and clear. 3) If you don't use your onboard serial port, you can disable it in the bios and gain irq 4 4) On some machines, irq 9 is free. Watch out for USB controllers or video cards (in your case no video to worry about). 5) dmesg | grep irq ought to give you some clues as to what is free, so will the Windows device manager (if you still have windows). 6) I also recommend using a pared down pccard.conf file with only the cards that you are going to use (helps with debugging) and call it /etc/pccard.conf a) add pccard_conf="/etc/pccard.conf" to /etc/rc.conf b) make sure that the irq entry has _only_ free irqs note: if you have an old version of pccard.conf, neither 8 nor 13 is free you shouldn't have 5 or 11 in there either. 7) Do you plan on using a pccard modem? If so, change all of the device sioN at blah blah to just one single device sio If you plan on using the onboard serial port, simply add options PNPBIOS and your serial port will be automagically picked up as long as it is enabled in the bios. How old is this machine? Do you hear any clicking noises from the disk? A number of us have reported this problem on the "old" 25 GB disks. When I installed 3.3 with the PAO boot floppies my Xircom 56T modem card and my Linksys EtherFast 10/100 were configured and beeped right away. I was under the impression that the card support work of PAO3.3 and PAO3.4 would be included in FreeBSD 4.0 and because of that there were no plans for a PAO4.0. I tried installing FreeBSD 4.0 from the CDROM, but it would not see my modem card or my ethernet card. I used the same pccard.conf entries from 3.3, re-built the kernel but nothing worked. I gave up and re-installed 3.3. Is 4.0 supposed to work on laptops with PCMCIA cards right off of the CDROM? If there will be no PAO4.0 will there be patches to apply? Any suggestions? The LT winmodem and the ESS sound card both use IRQ 5 too, : but since there aren't any drivers for them that's OK if they don't work : :-). What's the procedure for resolving this? No. You can't run multiple devices on the same IRQ. Full stop. It isn't supported with pccards on FreeBSD right now. And you can't use IRQs for hardware that doesn't have drivers. It just doesn't work. You have to disable the device completely in BIOS/hardware before you can do that.
