I never heard of XvImages |extension. Basically, YUV images rather than RGB images. Provides a nice way to let the video card do the expensive scaling, interpolation, and color-space conversion. In case you want to play with it, I've attached a few simple test progs I cooked back in May when I was playing with it. simpletv.c is a simple TV app that blasts real-time YUV from Bt848 cards to the Xv extension in an X window. You can stretch the window whatever size you want. Different from Fxtv/bktr in RGB mode, you're not limited to 640x480 (NTSC) or 768x576 (PAL). You can stretch it to 1280x1024 if you want. I can on my Matrox G200 here (just did). Very low CPU too. xv_ext_test.c just prints the adaptors and formats that the Xv extension says it can handle. BTW, for simpletv you'll want to run Fxtv first -- simpletv doesn't do input/input format/channel/frequency set/etc. setup so that's why. You'll also need the hermes port to link, though it's not used for YUV stuff. Hopefully the XFree86 group will greatly expand video card support for XvImages in the future. As I said, that's really the way to go. Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi, well its not a hardware question but is there anything to convert an avi (mjpeg as read by blender or raw) into mpg ? There should be something in the netpbm family simply to put into the mpeg_encode.param file. Not a programmer so I cant write it myself. H. Since last week I got sound working on an IBM Thinkpad 600X which has an AC97 compliant mixer and a CrystalMedia chip identified as: csa0: mem 0x50000000-0x500fffff,0x50100000-0x50100fff irq 11 at device 6.0 on p ci0 pcm0: on csa0 more /dev/sndstat gives: FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm) Aug 30 2000 22:28:41 Installed devices: pcm0: at irq 11 (1p/1r channels duplex) Now comes the problem: /dev/dsp and it's friends report "device busy" when the computer is resumed after it has been in suspended mode (zzz). When trying to access /dev/dsp after the resume I see the following in dmesg: pcm0: play interrupt timeout, channel dead Is it possible to "re-init" the audio-device after this resume from suspended mode to get the device work again? If I try to reboot the computer the device probe will fail on the sound device. Sometimes it will freeze the computer and sometime it will report "device not ready" or "ac97 codec invalid or not present id==0" . I have to turn off and on the computer to get it working again. (..or boot MS windows before rebooting to FreeBSD). Any suggestions how to solve this? Recently I upgraded to 4.0-RELEASE and now I can watch TV with no sound :-( Looking at the boot messages I found that the interrupt which was earlier used by the sound card has been taken up by the Hauppage TV card as the PCI cards are being probed first. Is there any way I can force PCI probe code not to use a particular interrupt ? I would love to have both TV and sound working together. At present I have removed the bktr device from the kernel as sound is more impartant than watching TV! Any pointers/help to resolve this conflict will be much appreciated. Regards, Ajith. However, when compiled into the kernel, it seems to mess up the sound driver (pcm, crystal cs23x) such that no sound or garbled sound at a low volume comes out. Has anyone else seen this? I'm using the mga driver from the XFree86 cvs tree to do 3D work, which is why I'm using the AGP driver. Stephen -- The views expressed above are not those of PGS Tensor. Sorry to answer a question with a question, but what does the AGP driver do? There's no manpage and my AGP mga400 'works' but without acceleration without it loaded. Try compiling it in with a "device agp" in your config file - as I mentioned, the module doesn't seem to probe correctly. Stephen -- The views expressed above are not those of PGS Tensor. This is only a problem in 4.x which I will probably fix when I get a chance. The AGP driver is required for 3D acceleration. Basically, its a mapping table which translates non-contiguous physical memory into a range of contiguous bus addresses. The 3D drivers use this to help allocate large DMA buffers for streaming 3D commands to the hardware. -- Doug Rabson Mail: dfr@nlsystems.com Nonlinear Systems Ltd. It's odd, becuase the interrupts from the sound device are still coming in at the expected rate - just not any sound, like it's bufferring from some random chunk of clear memory. The log below is what I > wanted to send. Rat still doesn't work, due to a mixer problem, it seems: I don't think this relates to the mixer - I get the same mixer error and it runs fine. The mixer error is due to a difference in the mixer api that I haven't gotten around to resolving - I've been busy elsewhere for the past while. I'll look into it this now, it can't be very hard to fix. This error looks to coincide with the write buffer going dry. But I only paid $5 for my Yamaha. :-) Actually I pulled the AW35/37 (the cheap one) as the sound it produced under FreeBSD was badly wrong. As if it were running an ADPCM codec and being fed PCM or something. Spent a fair amount of time admiring the documentaion and trying my hand at hacking things into the driver. There was an init sequence I think was wrong but my work neither improved or hurt anything so I abandonded it. Bought the Yamaha card. It played! It sounded terrible. The AOpen card claimed CS's standard 85db S/N ratio. The Yamaha S/N ratio was about 10db according to my ears. They can't all be as bad as mine else Yamaha would get laughed into oblivion. -- David Kelly N4HHE, dkelly@hiwaay.net ===================================================================== The human mind ordinarily operates at only ten percent of its capacity -- the rest is overhead for the operating system.
