In the first place I didn't see that messages and just wondered why my sondcard (AWE64) didn't work any more. I remembered, that I had this problem long time ago (over a year) with the current sources (pre 5). I twiddled with the MAXMEM setings of my SMP Box. After reducing the physical memory from 512MB down to 440MB, the system was successful with the isa_dmainit. As far as I could track down the problem, it has to do with the contigmalloc routine, not able to get memory in the physical first 16MB. It is just my assumption that something had changed in the way how memory get mapped in first place by the kernel. The tarball can be found at http://www.bobdbob.com/~protius/software/video.tgz This is /extremely/ alpha quality, its more the proof-of-concept code than anything. I use it every week to digitize a public access TV show a friend of mine does though. The way the last month has been, attempting to get around to cleaning it up would result in just too long of a delay. >That would be great, I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to do this. >BTW, how much space does an uncompressed video take? My back of the >envelope >calculations for a 30fps 30 minute long uncompressed video place it >around >76,032,000 bytes, ouch. Yea, 'tis a nasty volume of data. I usualy do 352x240x30fps at 16 bpp YUV, which is approxomately what NTSC does (YUV-422). That works out to about 9GB/30 minutes. Full resolution would be 36.4GB/30 minutes. Harware compression is your friend. :-) The problem I ended up spending more effort on was syncing the audio and video. My solution isn't perfect, but it at least dosn't drift badly over a 30 minute run. I have two circular buffers in shared memory, the audio buffer is fed by an independant reader process. The video buffer is fed by a signal handler, and the main body of the video process writes both buffers to disk, using a single file. The original implementation had two files, but seeks between the two writers killed performance. Every 333 frames, the writer throws away audio samples, to force the two buffers to line up. Its also dosn't write the same number of audio samples per frame, since 44100 audio samples per sec dosn't divide by 29.97 frames per sec. The least common multiple is 333 frames... On my setup, it almost always has an error of 98 audio samples per cycle. Anyway, let me know if its of any use, or how bad my code is... :-) -Tommy Johnson protius@bobdbob.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Tue Dec 12 6:31: 7 2000 From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Dec 12 06:31:02 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from smtpproxy1.mitre.org (mb-20-100.mitre.org [129.83.20.100]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 815FC37B402 for ; Tue, 12 Dec 2000 06:31:01 -0800 (PST) Received: from avsrv1.mitre.org (avsrv1.mitre.org [129.83.20.58]) by smtpproxy1.mitre.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id JAA00890 for ; Tue, 12 Dec 2000 09:30:53 -0500 (EST) Received: from mailsrv2.mitre.org (mailsrv2.mitre.org [129.83.221.17]) by smtpsrv1.mitre.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id JAA08940 for ; Tue, 12 Dec 2000 09:30:52 -0500 (EST) Received: from mitre.org ([128.29.145.140]) by mailsrv2.mitre.org (Netscape Messaging Server 4.15) with ESMTP id G5GLNF00.54G; Tue, 12 Dec 2000 09:30:51 -0500 Message-ID: <3A3636CE.10ABEEBA@mitre.org> Date: Tue, 12 Dec 2000 09:31:42 -0500 From: "Andresen,Jason R." Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Well, I've recently run into a program that requires threaded X11 libraries (the newest version of xine), however I cannot figure out how to compile XFree-4 with thread support. I know the XFree 3.3.6 that ships with FreeBSD is compiled with threading, but it is much too slow on my video card. How do you compile XFree with threading support? I've found nothing in the configuration that even hints at it, in fact the only mention of threads in the documentation is in reference to WinNT. The XFree FAQ doesn't even mention anything about it. I know this is more of an XFree question, but I'm afraid of their mailing lists. :P -- _ _ _ ___ ____ ___ ______________________________________ / \/ \ | ||_ _|| _ \|___| | Jason Andresen -- jandrese@mitre.org / /\/\ \ | | | | | |/ /|_|_ | Views expressed may not reflect those /_/ \_\|_| |_| |_|\_\|___| | of the Mitre Corporation. There are type of files in the .tgz: -diffs files of existing configure.in and Makefile.am files .tar files containing the vgl directories for libgii/input and libggi/display Note that diffs files may be incorrect since it's the first time I patch an autoconf/automake distribution. Your feedbacks will be really welcome. The VGL support has been tested only with 8bit palette 320x200, 640x480 and 800x600 modes on -current (R5.0) and -stable (R4.2) versions of FreeBSD. Note that to enable VESA modes on FreeBSD, you have to load the vesa module and use a VESA card with BIOS support for these modes (use vidcontrol(1) with parameter '-i mode' to be sure). Also, when ./configuring your libgii and libggi directories, ensure that you have the LIBS environment variable properly set to export LIBS="-L/usr/local/lib -lc_r -lvgl". I'd be glad to know how to configure this with the configure.in or Makefile.am files. A web page is available at http://people.freebsd.org/~nsouch for tarballs (once fixed with your first review) and progession of the development. BUGS ---- Yet, only the star, flying_ggis and demo programs work. I've compiled XGGI 1.6.2 and tryed it, but it even doesn't work with display-x target :( I think the libc sucks with the dynamic loading of GGI modules, but not sure... Modes above 320x200 do not perfectly render the demo program. I think it's due to the VGL support, but not sure... Comments are *really* welcome. Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I tried staring to play with DAP, an xforms based sound/wave editor which allows for playing .aiff files and selections thereof. Problems starts when I want to play a small portion (zoomed area) of a sound piece. Sometimes DAP doesn't play it at all. When I enlarge the selected area again a bit, it plays. Can anyone confirm this behaviour? I want to avoid switching over to Windoze just for having such a tool. I don't mind xforms a s a GUI, it's a bit slow and sticky though but as long as the underlying application performs it's purpose I wouldn't mind. -- Chris Christoph P. U. Strange I thought, stopped X11, gnome etc. Still busy. Rebooted. OK. fine. Started X11, twm (still my favorite WM, blindingly fast startup), x11amp, started playing the music, ran gnome-session which now said /dev/dsp busy. gnome-session wants to play some snartch, click, boing audio samples when certain events occur. Now my question to make a long story short: How can different applications share the sound device (/dev/dsp)? I believe the answer is 'soundserver'. Is there such under FreeBSD? -- Chris Christoph P. Is there such under FreeBSD? bad news, gnome-session is using esound ( from enlightenment ) as the gatekeeper to /dev/dsp. that's why /dev/dsp appears busy to the apps that call /dev/dsp - which is *most* of them because calling the devices has been the approved way to do hardware type stuff in unix since time immemorial. i dont know for sure, but i am betting that esound is derived from the sndserver code, sndserver used to be what one used to play doom and COW-netreck in the good old days. the 'right' answer is for /dev/dsp to be a multi-threaded reentrant kinda thang. but it's a device driver in a kernel. so the kernel's gotta get fixed ....argh, here we are again. same place it's been since i started running FreeBSD v0.9x. It's obviously a very hard problem because we have been dealing with it by creating userland hacks for many years now. so, you either use gnome/esound, and port all of the existing /dev/dsp code to use esound, or you dont use gnome/esound and you get to still use /dev/dsp. but then the esound stuff like sweep doesnt work because it has no ui or device connection :-( sigh. johnu (aka spaz@u.washington.edu if any of you have that lengthy of a freebsd-hackers memory) > -- > Chris Christoph P. Kill esd after starting your session withhin X. If something needs esd, it will be started and will release /dev/dsp after some idle time. This was the default for the initial start of esd some time ago, but it changed. > so, you either use gnome/esound, and port all of the existing /dev/dsp > code to use esound, or you dont use gnome/esound and you get to still use > /dev/dsp. but then the esound stuff like sweep doesnt work because it has > no ui or device connection :-( Sweep didn't uses esound.
