Setting up a serial console was straightforward. Necessity using it is mentioned in Wilko's comprehensive 'hardware.txt' compilation, as my AS200 has a ZLXp-E1 card (Linux folks use TGA fb which switches to STD VGA res, potentially leaving fixed freq. Monitor out of sync). Using MGA MIL-I with OpenFW v3 shows no display at all (only PPC code?). 2.) Kernel boots successfully from CD #1, drive at SCSI ID 3. SCSI Disk at ID 2 was intended as installation target (with BSD labelled Disks at ID 0&1 with Tru64/ Linux on them). As soon as console selection is performed, an error msg ('wrong disklabel' something) is displayed, and kernel forces reboot. I considered 'cannot mount root' problem from JKH's 'trouble.txt', but system is already installed in that case, and his guide doesn't seem to be alpha-specific (?). 3.) Only disconnecting Disks at ID 0&1 led me further in the install menu (drive bay is tight; temporarily removed both internal disks and mounted target disk at ID 0 internally). Writing disklabels, initializing & mounting filesystems performs successfully. But, during package extraction, install stalls, notably at different points of installation. While this sounds like a SCSI related problem, I re-verified if cable-lengths (only internal drives) termination etc. were good (they did). Also tried to fetch packages via Network, but system hung as before. AS200 remained completely dead for hours, CD Rom could be ejected (in case of local install - disc not locked by mount?), and would only recover after hard reset. So, linux/sparc users have same problem. This wasn't the easiest install I've ever done but it works great. The only problem I have is that I cannot get the system to run at a clock frequency higher than 106MHz, which to my belief is incorrect. System: - AXPpci33 MB with 48Mb, SCSI disk on the NCR, 2x ethernet (3C509C and RLT8039) - DEC 21066-AA cpu (checked by removing heatsink) Symptom: What happens is that I set the clock frequency using jumpers J7 on the board. These set some IRQ pins on the CPU which then uses an internal PLL to make the clock. When I boot I see the message: FreeBSD 4.2-RELEASE #2: Fri Feb 2 22:33:09 CET 2001 root@alpha.homenet:/usr/src/sys/compile/rbalpha DEC AXPpci Alpha PC AXPpci33, 106MHz 8192 byte page size, 1 processor. CPU: LCA Family major=4 minor=2 OSF PAL rev: 0x100090002012d real memory = 48259072 (47128K bytes) avail memory = 41492480 (40520K bytes) OK, so this tells me that I have a 106MHz processor. Crazy. The jumpers are set correctly. I tried over- and underclocking but this is what the J7 does: J7 MHz 135 246 ||: 106 :|| 106 |:: 53 ::| 106 ::: 35 |:| 106 :|: 53 As a final try I stuck a Debian/Alpha disk in the machine and booted. It told me: "HWRPB cycle frequency of 107181136 Hz seems inaccurate, using the measured value of 106270410 Hz". I also got the message "Build this processor's slot in the HWRPB" once. Anybody have any clues? Is my NVRAM rotten? Battery gone? (It remembers my bootdisk though) Any help greatly appreciated. This is the classic symptom of having your console pointed at the wrong device. FreeBSD is actually booting, but you can't see it, since you're not looking at the currently defined system console. The SRM console gives you enough feedback through a non-console input device to lull you into thinking you have the console setting correct. If you're using a serial console, make sure you're connected to COM1 and you've told the srm console you're using a serial console via this command at the SRM prompt: >>> set console serial If you're using a graphics console with keyboard and mouse, make sure you tell the SRM console to use it rather than the serial console via this command from the SRM prompt: >>> set console graphics After issuing one of those commands, make sure you power-cycle the box or do a hard reset. When the machine re-inits, you should notice the POST process is much more verbose. This is a FAQ. Too bad we don't have an FAQ to refer people to.. I'm not to sure if I list this for the LX, but it is definetely mentioned for other alpha models. -- | / o / / _ Arnhem, The Netherlands email: wilko@freebsd.org |/|/ / / /( (_) Bulte http://www.freebsd.org http://www.nlfug.nl To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message
