You might try backing up to that version of FreeBSD if your running something newer. Also, when was the last time you installed the linux_base port? I start X with XDM. You might also look in the XFree notes for your card to see if there are optimizations which can be disabled in your XFree86Config file. Another thought: use XFree86 3.x - it may be more stable for your card. I know how discouraging the kind of experience you are having can be :) there is hope, though, because my configuration is the same save for the different video card, so you should be able to make it work without too much more hassle. I've also downgraded to 4.0.3 and am having problems still. I'm planning on trying downgrading to 3.3.6 when I get a chance, even though my video card has better support under 4. The hardware in this case is: CDROM at ata0-slave using PIO3 In another instance, I can boot the guest OS off the CDROM (win2k or win98) but when I go to try and install, it never finishes copying the CD and gives an error message. However, now running -stable it gets a sig. abort. I haven't had time to isolate at what point along -stable it broke. Doug A.
