It may not be portable across *all* JVM's, but it should work on any hardware platform that supports J2SE. Linux Communicator 4.x (which, in my personal opinion, is not particularly modern) supports JDK 1.1 (which is absolutely not modern). The source to the Netscape plugin is provided in the JDK 1.3.1 source bundle. It isn't tied to a particular version of the JDK, so you could build it against the native 1.2.2 beta one. Can is handle scripting (LiveScript) control of Java? I couldn't the last time I tried it. I also tried very hard to get the Java Plugin to work with native (FreeBSD) and Linux versions of Mozilla 5/Netscape6, but to no avail. I think it was with the native built version that I got enough feedback to see what Linux *.so files it was wanting. And I added, and added, and added them to no avail. I wasn't sure how the FreeBSD ELF mozilla would handle the Linux ELF .so files, but it seemed to have at least been trying. The Netscape6 and RPM Mozilla 5's that I tried all seemed to have the debug information stripped, so I couldn't get any useful hints as to why it wasn't starting up the Linux 1.3.0_02 plugin. The Linux 1.3.0_02 plugin DOES WORD for Linux Netscape 4.7x on FreeBSD. Well, AFAIK LiveScript is not a standard, but a Netscape feature. Thus I believe Konqueror probably does not support it. You best chance would be Netscape 6 in combination with J2SE v1.3.1. The latter is currently in beta, but I read something about Netscape 6 compatibility in the release notes. So if you don't need the LiveScript API, then Konqueror would be a very good choice IMHO. If you do, then you should check out the Konqueror docs to see if it does support LiveScript or a similar API. Otherwise Netscape 6 would be your best bet. Perhaps you could detail what docs you found, the steps you performed, etc. and send them to this mailing list, I'm sure that there would be enough helpful people to get to the bottom of this :) Ernst > I also tried very hard to get the Java Plugin to work with native (FreeBSD) > and Linux versions of Mozilla 5/Netscape6, but to no avail. > > I think it was with the native built version that I got enough feedback to > see what Linux *.so files it was wanting. Folks, I don't experience either, but I'd like to just draw your attention to certain behaviour of the emulation layer, which might cause the confusion. Namely, the Linux process using the emulation layer (e.g. the shell that .javawraper uses), when looking for a file or directory, it first traverses the hierarchy with root in /compat/linux/, and if it finds the matching filename there, it just looks no longer in the real / . So, if you accidentally have the filename that matches the one you look for, located in /compat/linux/, it will be picked up instead. -- Andrzej // ---------------------------------------------------------------- // Andrzej Bialecki , Chief System Architect // WebGiro AB, Sweden (http://www.webgiro.com) // ---------------------------------------------------------------- // FreeBSD developer (http://www.freebsd.org) To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Thu May 10 1:26:51 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from osku.suutari.iki.fi (osku.syncrontech.com [213.28.98.4]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4DE5B37B422 for ; Thu, 10 May 2001 01:26:44 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from ari@suutari.iki.fi) Received: from coffee (coffee.intranet.syncrontech.com [192.168.5.14]) by osku.suutari.iki.fi (8.11.3/8.9.3) with SMTP id f4A8QLK29608; Thu, 10 May 2001 11:26:21 +0300 (EEST) (envelope-from ari@suutari.iki.fi) Message-ID: <022e01c0d92a$e09997f0$0e05a8c0@coffee> From: "Ari Suutari" To: "Khuzaima A. I am interested in your experiences with FreeBSD/Java in production environments. Is anyone using FreeBSD/Java for a production webserver to run for example JSP or EJB containers? I am particulary interested in information about reliablity and predictability. We are looking to build a stable environment with relatively low volume traffic. Stability is favoured over performance (i.e. lack of HotSpot support is not a problem). We have deployed a servlet-based application using the native jdk1.2.2 without any problems. We recently migrated to linux-jdk1.3.0 since we needed some new rmi stuff, IIRC. The ony problem we ever encountered was a bug in the linux emulation wrt signal handling, fixed some time ago. We are going to deploy linux-jdk1.3.0/tomcat/jBoss/EJBs in the near future and things look good so far. -past To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Fri May 11 4:53:50 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from hobbits.brel.com (hobbits.brel.com [203.127.231.61]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A3AFC37B422 for ; Fri, 11 May 2001 04:53:47 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from calvinng@hobbits.brel.com) Received: by hobbits.brel.com (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 559013343; Fri, 11 May 2001 19:53:42 +0800 (SGT) Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 19:53:41 +0800 From: Calvin NG To: "Koster, K.J." Is anyone using FreeBSD/Java for a production webserver to run > for example JSP or EJB containers? > We're in the servlet stage. Production like, sort of. Mostly demo kind of things. There's nothing wrong with Java other than that's Sun focussing on Solaris and Linux. And Windows, of course. Stability is a tough nut to crack. As you should know, Java the language, has no flaws pertaining to stability as such. My pet beef with it is that it is slow. It uses that two world thingum GC and stuff, whilest I like reference counting. The other thing with Java is that it is trailing Smalltalk by twelve years or so. None of which has, again, anything to do with stability as such. Java is one thing. The environment you run it in another. Nothing is perfect. So with OSs. But which do you feel most comfortable with? Which do you feel you can trust?
