So I'm attacking it tomorrow and/or Monday. So if you have a laptop that "hangs on boot" and it has a TI bridge chipset, then please do not send me mail saying it is broken. Some of the laptops do hang, others (like my Dell) do not for reasons unknown. Once I get this laptop fixed, I'll put out a call for testers to see if it helps then commit to -current then MFC before 4.4. Then go onto the next problem. Are you sure there is no panic while in X? Your X server might have futzed with the video card so you might not actually see the panic. If you can try to reproduce this in text mode, then the panic message as well as a traceback would be a very good start. But before you do that, I believe I may have found a fix for a possible panic situation. This panic occurs in witness_destroy as a supervisor read page not present error (I presume while trying to dereference lock). This panic can be easily reproduced by running dhclient an0, removing and reinserting the card, then killing dhclient. The fix appears to be shockingly simple: diff -u -r1.8 if_an_pccard.c --- sys/dev/an/if_an_pccard.c 2001/05/26 09:26:58 1.8 +++ sys/dev/an/if_an_pccard.c 2001/08/19 12:57:14 @@ -118,6 +118,7 @@ sc->an_gone = 1; bus_teardown_intr(dev, sc->irq_res, sc->irq_handle); an_release_resources(dev); + mtx_destroy(&sc->an_mtx); return (0); } Here's where I require some guidance from someone in the know. While this patch appears to avoid the problem on my system, does it in fact work? How does the panic occur and how does this fix the problem, if indeed it does? I'm quite clueless as to the implementation of mutex locking on freebsd, and I suppose it's just plain luck that the first thing I tried turned out to have done the trick... -Jon To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Sun Aug 19 9:13:59 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from ns.yogotech.com (ns.yogotech.com [206.127.123.66]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3605E37B40E for ; Sun, 19 Aug 2001 09:13:56 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from nate@yogotech.com) Received: from nomad.yogotech.com (nomad.yogotech.com [206.127.123.131]) by ns.yogotech.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id KAA27854; Sun, 19 Aug 2001 10:13:55 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from nate@nomad.yogotech.com) Received: (from nate@localhost) by nomad.yogotech.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) id KAA24623; Sun, 19 Aug 2001 10:13:54 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from nate) From: Nate Williams MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-ID: <15231.58818.283334.737765@nomad.yogotech.com> Date: Sun, 19 Aug 2001 10:13:54 -0600 To: Warner Losh Cc: mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Have thinkpad that hangs In-Reply-To: <200108190710.f7J7ASW55520@harmony.village.org> References: <200108190710.f7J7ASW55520@harmony.village.org> X-Mailer: VM 6.95 under 21.1 (patch 12) "Channel Islands" XEmacs Lucid Reply-To: nate@yogotech.com (Nate Williams) Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > I have a thinkpad A20p that has the same hanging problem that Nate > sees with his Thinkpad T21 (or T20, I'm not sure). What I mean here is that an unpatched -current (as of mid-August) was not resulting in detection of my LMC352. In the current sources, the following in src/sys/conf/files has been commented out: #dev/an/if_an_pccard.c optional an pccard Commenting this out and recompiling did NOT result in a successful attach, at least when I tested this in early August. I'm testing again by backing out of your patch and recompiling, and it turns out that it -does- work now, most likely this was operator error in not uncommenting the the conf/files entry, since I don't see any likely commits that would have changed anything...sigh, sorry for the waste of time. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/sys/conf/files.diff?r1=1.483&r2=1.484&f=h documents when the line was commented out...it's been that way for a while... > > The first time I tried it (not in X) removal and reinsertion of the > > Aironet card was fine. > > > > The second time (while in X), removal was ok, but card reinsertion caused > > a reboot (no panic)... > > > > Let me know what you want me to do exactly, in terms of what kind of > > debugging you need...once I hear back I'll build a debug kernel. > > Are you sure there is no panic while in X? I'm now using the same pccardd with old and new kernels. I'm still only a little closer to having a solution for the pccard hanging on boot. I suspect either a) the bridge using the wrong type of interrupt signalling or b) the bridge is fine, but needs more bits cleared in some status register to properly ack the interrupt. I'm running 4.3-RELEASE on an IBM ThinkPad 600. I've looked for an if_ed.ko module but I can't find one anywhere, so I can't load it manually. I set up the ed driver in my kernel config (device ed) and set up an entry in pccard.conf, as the card identified itself differently than the Surecom in the default pccard.conf. card "CouplerlessPCMCIA" "100BASE" config auto "ed" ? insert /etc/pccard_ether $device start remove /etc/pccard_ether $device stop I think the identification may be different to that in the default pccard.conf because it's a new version of the card with no dongle. It turns out that you can't mess with the interrupt routing bits of register 0x92 for thinkpads and have them work. This, despite the fact that the PIR table says that the chip should be connected directly to the interrupts.... So this patch does two things. First, it doesn't set the INTRTIE bit, which should help some of the laptops that don't route things to the same interrupt. Second, it doesn't touch bits 1 and 2 of register 0x92 which direct how interrupts are routed. This didn't break my dell and made the thinkpad work again. Someone else reported this fix for their machine as well, but I don't know if it was a thinkpad or not. Please test them and let me know what you have to say. http://people.freebsd.org/~imp/pcic-44rc1.diff.1 Warner To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Mon Aug 20 1:32:44 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from cs.huji.ac.il (cs.huji.ac.il [132.65.16.10]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C81E037B412 for ; Mon, 20 Aug 2001 01:32:41 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from danny@cs.huji.ac.il) Received: from sexta.cs.huji.ac.il ([132.65.16.13] ident=exim) by cs.huji.ac.il with esmtp (Exim 3.32 #1) id 15YkUC-0002YY-00; Mon, 20 Aug 2001 11:32:40 +0300 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1] helo=sexta.cs.huji.ac.il ident=danny) by sexta.cs.huji.ac.il with esmtp (Exim 3.15 #1) id 15YkUB-00015l-00; Mon, 20 Aug 2001 11:32:39 +0300 X-Mailer: exmh version 2.2 06/23/2000 with nmh-0.24 To: Warner Losh Cc: mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: HEADS UP: pcic pci attachments merged from current In-reply-to: Your message of Thu, 16 Aug 2001 23:26:58 -0600 .
