I've found all the stuff I needed in the BIOS setup menu. OK, I find a ps2 program on this system. It's misleading at least to say that you need to use it for all BIOS settings, though. >> Some more recent Thinkpads come with a built-in PCI Ethernet card, >> which is both faster and easier to integrate than the PCMCIA cards. > > Very true. I need Ethernet, a modem, and a good screen, but I > don't need a CD drive, a floppy drive (except maybe to install FreeBSD > in the first place), or high performance. I'm using a Sony VAIO PCG-Z505JS (Model PCG-5201) (1024x768x24) with FreeBSD 4.3-STABLE (I will probably upgrade to 4.4-RELEASE this weekend). The only odd thing that I've had to do is dislable USB support in the Kernel and enable Plug-and-Play O/S in the BIOS in order to get my PCMCIA slot to work well. Also, I don't have the on-board soft modem working. Everything else works very well. I was using XFree86 3.x, but it was not accellerated for the NeoMagic chipset, so I purchased a commercial X server from Xi Graphics, Inc. (http://www.xig.com/). The Xi Graphics X server works great as long as I don't suspend the notebook. When I come back from suspend mode, the screen is covered with speckels. Most of the time, I can clear that up by running xrefresh, but sometimes the system is locked hard when it comes back from suspend mode with the Xi Graphics X server. Didn't have this problem with XFree86. Not a big deal for me though as I seldom use suspend. I'm using a Cisco Aironet 350 wireless ethernet card. That works great as well. I got a lot of use out of it at the O'Reilly Open Source conference in San Diego. :-) If you can still by this model, it should work well for you. Sony has some new models out now that may also work well. Please let me know what you end up with. David C. I've tried changing the base address to 0x180 like you would to get this drive working under linux but that didn't seem to work no matter which irq I used. I've even tried to install from an existing fat (and fat32) partition but it fails to mount /dev/ad0s2 on /dist. The first slice is an ntfs partition with win2k and the second is a logical fat32 drive in an extended partition. I'll try a network install soon but any help on getting this drive to work would be appreciated. You should also see http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/bsd/2000/11/02/Big_Scary_Daemons.html which provides informations on configuring pcmcia cards.... About the Xircom question, there is a site dedicated to "Xircom and FreeBSD" where you can find many questions/answers to classic problems: http://ukug.uk.freebsd.org/~scott/xe_drv/ As far as I experienced, it seems that the Xircom cards like the irq 10... You should so set the irq 10 in the corresponding entry of your pccard.conf file. Hi Rosemary, If the card is a _16-bit_ Xircom 10/100 + modem, it should work just fine, although you won't be able to use the modem and Ethernet parts at the same time under 4.x. The Ethernet part uses the xe driver while the modem will work with the standard sio serial driver. What's the model number printed on the bottom of the card? If it begins with 'CE3' or 'REM-56' you should be OK. Probably the easiest way to proceed is to make sure you have 'pccard_enable="YES"' in your /etc/rc.conf, reboot, then insert the card and see what happens. Because of the way that /etc/defaults/pccard.conf is ordered you'll probably end up with a modem rather than Ethernet, but at least you'll know that pccardd is recognising the card correctly. To get the Ethernet side working, I'd suggest copying the relevant entries for the 'xe' driver, right at the end of /etc/defaults/pccard.conf into /etc/pccard.conf, so these will be checked first. I'll think you'll need to kill and restart pccardd (or just reboot) for those changes to be noticed. When you insert the card, you should get an 'xe0' interface being configured. If the card doesn't seem to be recognised, post the error messages back to freebsd-mobile. The Xircom cards can be a bit fussy about which configurations they will work with, but they usually work in the end... First, please don't send HTML to this list. Second, it would really help if you would tell us what model of card and laptop you have. In general, cards with a 'B' in the model number are 32-bit CardBus cards and are not supported. I don't know if models starting with "RE2" are working, but they didn't used to. Finally, you will find PCMCIA support for most platforms MUCH better under 4.4 than 4.2 with the added benefit of shared interrupts for PCcard devices in most cases. This saves interrupts which are in short supply in many laptops by using a single IRQ for both cards and for the PCIC controller. R. I believe Simon Walton was going to look at this, but it will not run under emulation and, even on Linux, I'm told it is only partly functional. Feel free to poke at it yourself and see if you can achieve any success, but it does not look trivial as it has a LOT of Linuxisms in it. R. With some machines ACPI still seems to have some issues. If your upgrading remember to read /usr/src/UPDATING which has: 20010927: Some weird problems result from using ACPI on some machines. To disable ACPI you can add hint.acpi.0.disable="1" to /boot/loader.conf (or by putting set X=Y at the boot loader "ok" prompt). Alternatively, you can remove it from /boot/kernel/acpi.ko or use the MODULES_OVERRIDE function in your kernel config file and not list acpi in that list. So hence: set hit.acpi.0.disable=1 at the loader will probably allow your machine to boot. Another thought is you must have /boot/device.hints (which make installkernel would have told you about) else you'll get no console output.
