I'm the author of this page, and I'm pretty surprised to see my URL in this mailing list. As described by other mail, this page is outdated. I must catch up with recent -CURRENT, but I'm not using this Z505 now because my wife is using Windows on it. ;-) At that time(2000-07-28), many patches were required, but now all patches are merged into -CURRENT and -STABLE. Thanks to all FreeBSD folks! Peter Radcliffe wrote: > > 2. As Peter says, you have to use ACPI. I don't know whether your VAIO's ACPI is fully supported or not, but try executing # acpiconf -s 3 to get your VAIO sleep(maybe your VAIO supports S3 sleep state). > > 3. The Jog Dial Recent -CURRENT supports jogdial (though I haven't tested yet). Please read /sys/i386/conf/NOTES. "device spic" should do the work. I don't know which userland application supports jogdial, but you can directly read the value from jogdial. The source is /sys/i386/isa/spic.c , and the project URL is http://phantom.cris.net/freebsd/projects/viewproj.php?p_id=3 . > > 4. Ah, yes. My Z505NR can't use memory stick device either. This device is attached to ATA device. But recent VAIO's memory stick reader is attached to USB mass storage. From your Z600LEK's dmesg, Michael Piotrowski wrote: > umass0: Sony USB Memory Stick Slot, rev 1.10/1.31, addr 3 it is shown that your memory stick reader is attached to umass0. Your memory stick reader may work. Plug in your memory stick to the reader, and just execute # camcontrol rescan da Your memory stick will be attached to /dev/da0s1 or something like that. Now, I'm using VAIO SR9/K and this VAIO also has memory stick reader as USB mass storage. I can use it both on 4.3-RELEASE and -CURRENT. > What I'm really looking for at this point is, as I said, mainly > information and experiences (which I would be happy to summarize). Thanks to all FreeBSD folks! Um, the CD-ROM (PCGA-CD51) problem still exists in -current, while it worked for you back in 2000 (!), and should work in -release with that patch. I don't know about stable, but it doesn't seem to contain the patch either. This is *very* confusing. > Peter Radcliffe wrote: > > > 2. Well, I've tried -release and -current, though only briefly: - In -release, I could use the hardware button to put it to sleep (didn't try apm(1)), and it would wake up afterwards, but it had trouble with USB (someone else had already described this problem on this list). - In -current, ACPI was detected, and I could put it to sleep either using hardware or software, but it wouldn't wake up again. However, this is just from memory, and I only tested it very briefly. >> > 3. The Jog Dial > > Recent -CURRENT supports jogdial (though I haven't tested yet). > Please read /sys/i386/conf/NOTES. Thanks a lot! However, after I found out that *different* sets of things work/fail with 4.4-release and -current (thus my confusion), I decided to try Linux, and Redhat 7.1 worked out of the box (other Linux distributions didn't). So, although FreeBSD would have been my first choice, I'm now a bit reluctant to try it again right now... Maybe in a while. I don't think multicast receive has ever worked properly -- if you grovel around in the if_xe.c code you'll find some stuff to set up the multicast address filters that is never actually used :-( It's been on my list of things to fix for ages, but no-one complained until now. Oops :-) Fixing this should just be a matter of setting up the multicast hash filter properly (actually, setting it up at all) and tickling a few mode bits. Is is OK if I send you any patches I come up with to test, since you seem to have a suitable environment for doing so? Each pcic controls two slots and the second controller is normally for the slots in a docking station or port expander. In any case, the kernel would not need a rebuild. You would just have to enable the second controller. I know that Warner had some problems with the Cirrus Logic CardBus controller and I also recall that there was a problem with only a single slot working. I don't recall any details. If you don't have it, you need /dev/cuaa4 for ppp on sio4. You need to make these devices as FreeBSD only has 0-3 by default: cd /dev; ./MAKEDEV cuaa4 ttyd4 > Other one, > I have a Xircom Real Port CardBus Ethernet 10/100 > PMCIA card and I get this message when I plug-in, it > is any way to configure this card? > /kernel: pcic0: Card type 32-bit cardbus is unsupported I think the message you received is pretty clear. CardBus cards are not supported in stable at this time. They will be supported under V5 in another year. Support MAY show up in 4.x if the developers working on it get enough time. R. I have a IBM ThinkPad 560E with a Cirrus Logic PD6729 chipset. This laptop contains a single controller with two slots, not two controllers, which got me kind of confused at first as well. My kernel just contains the lines straight from GENERIC. This is the output from dmesg: pcic0: port 0x3e0-0x3e3 \ irq 0 at device 19.0 on pci0 ID is 0x82 ID is 0x82 pcic0: Polling mode pccard0: on pcic0 pccard1: on pcic0 It is seeing two slots (pccard0, pccard1), and first/top slot (slot 0) works, but the second/bottom slot (slot 1) does not. Obviously a lot of changes are being done on the pcic driver now and some things are occasionally broken. :) I did a cvsup last week, November 3rd, and this is when the problem appeared. My previous cvsup sometime in the first week of September, it still worked, so something has been done recently. :) This issue might of even been fixed already, and as far as I know it only affects the Cirrus Logic chipsets, but this is just my speculation from browsing the list. Also from looking through the archives I recall Warner mentioning that you SHOULD be able to just use older files from /usr/src/sys/pccard/ and have it function properly. I think he specified certain .c and .h files, but I can't be for sure about anything. He would know better. :) If your in a scenario where you require both slots, I would suggest using 4.3-RELEASE or a 4.4-STABLE from September (or October?). Fortunately I just use this laptop for playing on, so I'm not too concerned with it personally, as I'm sure it's temperamental. A note to Warner, if you want a guinea pig for this chipset, I'm around. :) On Tue, 6 Nov 2001, Trevor Osatchuk wrote: > Kevin, > > Thanks for the reply, when you say that I would just have to enable the > second controller do you mean the second slot on the first contoller,(i.e. > slot 1 on pcic0) or pcic1? I have a Toshiba Portege 4000 (Trident Cyberblade XP kinda card) running under the vesa driver due to this version of the trident not being supported by the trident driver. Everything works fine except for one tiny little thing, by default when I am typing (I type at about 60 wpm not overly fast) I get quite a few double characters in any words I type. This only happens in X, not in the console nor under windows. My current workaround is kicking off the following in my .xsession... #!/bin/sh while true do /usr/X11R6/bin/xkbset bo 50 sleep 60 done Which seems to do the job 99% of the time and makes things usable but not 100% of the time, has any body had this kind of experience and if so did you get it fixed :) If you have no idea what I am talking about reply back and I will try and elaborate a bit more. I have also included a copy of my XF86Config. I'm (and some others I know are) also using IPv6 with an xe-pccard, so you're not alone :) Using rtsol when the interface is in promiscuous mode works, but I usually set the IPv6 address using ifconfig in dhclient-exit-hooks so I don't need to go into the promiscuous mode. - Willem van Engen --=.za'ia0tgAzRd,3 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.6 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQE76l49gV5rBd/7/90RAitMAJ99Mm6Iz1ZTI2otQgEYKWw+n/AYEgCgsC02 K+FEJRpbw5kA6zMC30ukeZg= =IWDu -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --=.za'ia0tgAzRd,3-- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Thu Nov 8 9:28:57 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from viper.oldcity.dca.net (viper.oldcity.dca.net [216.158.38.4]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0DA9D37B41A for ; Thu, 8 Nov 2001 09:28:55 -0800 (PST) Received: from defiant.mutara.net (ns1.mutara.net [216.158.26.30]) by viper.oldcity.dca.net (8.11.6/8.9.3/DCANET) with ESMTP id fA8HSs712432 for ; Thu, 8 Nov 2001 12:28:54 -0500 Received: (from cgriffiths@localhost) by defiant.mutara.net (8.11.6/8.11.6) id fA8HTEZ74113 for freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org; Thu, 8 Nov 2001 12:29:14 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from cgriffiths@dca.net) X-Authentication-Warning: defiant.mutara.net: cgriffiths set sender to cgriffiths@dca.net using -f Date: Thu, 8 Nov 2001 12:29:14 -0500 From: Chris Griffiths To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Sound Issues Message-ID: <20011108122914.A74032@dca.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5i X-Operating-System: FreeBSD/4.4-STABLE (i386) Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hello, I am currently running 4.4 -stable from about a couple of days ago. noticed recently that my sound on my laptop (Sony Vaio Z505JE) using: # Sound card support device pcm Here is my kernel output: pcm0: mem 0xfecf0000-0xfecf7fff irq 9 at device 9.0 on pci0 I am also getting the following output when I try to play sound files: pcm0: play interrupt timeout, channel dead I have found some information in the archives but none of it fixed my problems. I updated to 4.4-STABLE on Tuesday (10/06/2001), and I'm seeing problems getting my wireless card to work. This is what I've seen: If I insert the card in a plain setup with pccardd running, it picks up the card being inserted (with a nice beep) and detects the card as "Lucent Technologies" "WaveLAN/IEEE" - which as far as I know is correct. The lights on the card then continuously flash. If I use the settings from here: http://www.psg.com/~randy/dell/ With these the card is picked up and I get several different messages: "general protection fault" "panic" "timeout in wi_seek to 5a15/0 last status 4000" the errors do not seem to be consistent and all result in either the machine hanging or prompting for a reboot. I've also seen intermittent flashing of the lights on the card at the point of freezing. And without the pccard_mem setting in rc.conf from the above page I get: ioctl (PIOCRWMEM):invalid arguement The card is an Orinoco - a Lucent Technologies PC24E-H-ET, it has worked in a windows environment. I have tried the kernel flags pointed out in the 4.4-RELEASE release notes, but they result in total failure to detect the card and a total freeze. Can anyone help?
