Also, sorry for cross-posting, my intention is not to spam... The question is: I have a recent -CURRENT system and have the opportunity to buy (approx in the same price range) a Vodoo3 2000 card, a TNT2 based one, (nVidia Riva TNT2 PRO 32 MB AGP) or an S3 Savage4 PRO 32 MB card. Which is better as far as hardware based 3D support (OpenGL) goes? My existing card is very good at 2D so the only reason I would want to change is to be able to use 3D on FreeBSD... This occurs in two different computers with two different sound cards: pcm0: port 0xdc00-0xdc3f irq 10 at device 15.0 on pci0 pcm0: port 0x9800-0x983f irq 9 at device 13.0 on pci0 This sound is noticeable, but not dominant at low volumes. At high volumes (and no sound going out) the hissing is very noticeable. This hissing starts exactly when the sound card is initialized in the bootup sequence, which leads me to believe there is a way to fix it. Any hints? I will do my best to assist in tracing this! I'm using "device pcm0" in the kernel config for my FreeBSD 4.3-STABLE system. (Though this hissing has existed for as long as I can remember, probably even since 3.x?) It's an annoying problem which spoils the enjoyment of listening to audio on my FreeBSD systems :(. When I try to mount this under 4.3-RELEASE, I get: bookpc# mount /dev/acd0c cd9660: /dev/acd0c: Invalid argument But I can mount this on my older desktop. (I need to try on my laptop; that'll be for later.) I _can_ use cdda2wav under 4.3-RELEASE, with apparent impunity, on a strictly audio CD. I'm running dual head, and it works great until the menus have the mouse moved over them or a menu/xterm is overlaid over the fxtv window. Then everything to do with keyboard/mouse/video just freezes except the tv display. I can ssh in and reboot the machine, it just stops doing anything on the console. I've tried several versions of fbsd, of X, of fxtv. This same hardware (of course single head) in xfree 3.x had been solid for months this only cropped up when I moved to xfree4. The big monster really is the mute button of all things... if the mouse passes over the mute button its guaranteed to lock up. Other problems are more random, sometimes they lock up sometimes they dont. Of course it could be that those other random times are randomly interacting with the area the mute button is in... never thought of that. The usual behavior is that the mute iconbuttonthing blanks, the mouse it frozen over it, and all console activity stops except the tv, which is always on the wrong channel of course. oh and the cards are matrox g200 and mystique, mystique being the one the tv is on, and the same card the tuner has played nice with for 2 years thanks To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Thu Jun 14 13: 3:34 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from magic.adaptec.com (magic.adaptec.com [208.236.45.80]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2E5DF37B40D for ; Thu, 14 Jun 2001 13:03:18 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from scott_long@btc.adaptec.com) Received: from redfish.adaptec.com (redfish.adaptec.com [162.62.50.11]) by magic.adaptec.com (8.8.8+Sun/8.8.8) with ESMTP id NAA01398; Thu, 14 Jun 2001 13:03:07 -0700 (PDT) Received: from btc.btc.adaptec.com (btc.btc.adaptec.com [162.62.64.10]) by redfish.adaptec.com (8.8.8+Sun/8.8.8) with ESMTP id MAA18032; Thu, 14 Jun 2001 12:52:29 -0700 (PDT) Received: from btcexc01.btc.adaptec.com (btcexc01 [162.62.147.10]) by btc.btc.adaptec.com (8.8.8+Sun/8.8.8) with ESMTP id OAA11151; Thu, 14 Jun 2001 14:03:04 -0600 (MDT) Received: by btcexc01.btc.adaptec.com with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2650.21) id ; Thu, 14 Jun 2001 14:03:06 -0600 Message-ID: From: "Long, Scott" To: "'Glenn Johnson'" , ggm@apnic.net Cc: "'freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org'" Subject: RE: XFree86-4.1.0+mga+dri+FreeBSD-4.3-stable == hang Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 14:03:01 -0600 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2650.21) Content-Type: text/plain Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org [Moved to -multimedia] I thought that the DRI project still supported FreeBSD, but maybe not? Don't bother :) There is already a driver for this card (ALS4000, from the vendor/devids) in -CURRENT. I expect it will be MFC'd to 4.x during the next round of driver updates. I wouldn't recommend switching to -current to test the driver at this point in time... > Is there a newbie orientation tour of the FreeBSD audio system > available? Or can somebody share a few hints on how to get started? Best place to start would probably be the developers' handbook, which is linked somewhere from the website. It's primarily general information, not specific to newpcm. For that, you must use the Source until somebody can be bothered to write proper documentation :) -- +-------------------+---------------------+ | George Reid | FreeBSD Committer | | +44 7740 197460 | greid@FreeBSD.org | +-------------------+---------------------+ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Fri Jun 15 9:15:31 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from adsl-65-66-253-1.dsl.rcsntx.swbell.net (adsl-65-66-253-1.dsl.rcsntx.swbell.net [65.66.253.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6C88637B40A; Fri, 15 Jun 2001 09:15:22 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from tsprad@spradley.org) Received: from spradley.org (set.spradley.org [65.66.253.4]) by adsl-65-66-253-1.dsl.rcsntx.swbell.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id CCD291ED1; Fri, 15 Jun 2001 11:15:21 -0500 (CDT) Message-ID: <3B2A3450.C2147D51@spradley.org> Date: Fri, 15 Jun 2001 11:14:08 -0500 From: Ted Spradley Reply-To: tsprad@spradley.org Organization: S & S Computing X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.76 [en] (X11; U; FreeBSD 4.2-RELEASE i386) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: George Reid Cc: freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Device driver for SIIG Soundwave Pro PCI References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Thanks for the quick response! While doing this, I've come up with the idea of using the server to record programs off free-to-air TV to be watched on other computers. Does software exist which would allow me to program what I would like to record in advance? As the system resources are quite limited, I don't really want to use an X-based application. Would this kind of thing be possible on a Pentium 133 (simply capturing TV at approx. VCD resolution in uncompressed form, for later encoding) ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
