Hm. This is all a bit too uncertain for me to spend 500 Euro. I've had a look at the NS5530A datasheet, and it didn't really make me feel much better. I'll probably buy an external soundcard far that system instead. Advantech offers an ALS12-based card for the PC/104 slot. According to FreeBSD's HARDWARE.TXT, the ALS120 is supported. I've never worked with PC/104 stuff before, but I guess it's not too difficult to put the parts together. :-) (I also considered buying an USB audio DAC, but those don't seem to be supported either.) Anyway, thanks for all your suggestions and support. The on-board video is a Savage 4 which uses system RAM, probed as: S3 ProSavage PM133 rev 2 I have been trying to get XFree 4.1.0 up and running on this, but no luck. The box is running 5.0-C, though I have tried with 4.4-R also. With stock XFree, the box simply hangs solid as soon as I run XFree86, even with just -probeonly. -configure works fine... I've compiled and installed the latest version of the driver available at http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html -- a bit better, but still no luck: the screen is half garbage, and any graphics show up as dark blue. As a sidenote, it works perfectly with XFree 4.1.0 and the updated driver on Mandrake Linux (the stock driver hangs the box on Linux too). Following are the probe messages. I saw some similar problems in the archives and on Deja, but no conclusive answers or solutions. Various applications have different problems. xmms pops an error that says it can't "open audio" and then just decodes the files to disk. mpg123 looks like it runs normally, but no sound comes out and it exits much more quickly than it should. 'play' from sox does sometimes make sound come out of the speakers. But it just plays the first little bit of the file several times and then exits. Sometimes it exits silently, sometimes it says "sox: Error writing: Error writing data to file". In my logs, I get: Oct 28 15:31:57 eris /kernel: pcm0: play interrupt timeout, channel dead /dev/sndstat says: FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm) Oct 25 2001 18:03:37 Installed devices: pcm0: at memory 0xf8c00000, 0xfda00000 irq 5 (1p/1r/0v channels duplex) dmesg says: pci1: on pcib1 pci1: at 0.0 irq 11 pcm0: mem 0xfda00000-0xfdafffff,0xf8c00000-0xf8ffffff irq 5 at device 0.1 on pci1 So I'm kind of stuck now. I haven't gotten into this issue too deep, but from what I have read, it seems that this bug might very well also occur if there is no SBLive in the system. One article claimed that the SBLive puts the PCI bus under heavier-than-normal stress, which in turn triggers the bug more often. Furthermore, I guess that all "patches", like VIAs 4-in-1 driver for Windows (never used that since I don't have Windows) and the FreeBSD patch are only workarounds. The core of the problem has to be found (and fixed) in the BIOS, AFAIK. From my own experience, a mobo I own was initially subject to the bug, but once I updated the BIOS provided by the manufacturer, I could do whatever I wanted to without ever having any problems again... The bug is a "feature" of misprogramming the VIA parts, or rather make use of some advance features that partly doesn't work as advertised and partly dopesn't work randomly together. The problem is related PCI bus traffic, what generates it is of less importance... The fix in -current just makes sure these features are set in a way that is known to work. > Furthermore, I guess that all "patches", like VIAs 4-in-1 driver for > Windows (never used that since I don't have Windows) and the FreeBSD patch > are only workarounds. From my own experience, a mobo I own was initially > subject to the bug, but once I updated the BIOS provided by the > manufacturer, I could do whatever I wanted to without ever having any > problems again... Well, the problem can be fixed anywhere, its just a matter of writing the right values in a couble of PCI config regs. It should be fixed in the BIOS, but some vendors have chosen ONLY to apply this fix if a SBLive is detected, and that is NOT enough to make sure things work, and the reason I did this "hack". Its a workaround no matter where its done :) -Søren To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Mon Oct 29 8: 6:57 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from finch-post-12.mail.demon.net (finch-post-12.mail.demon.net [194.217.242.41]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0C34837B408 for ; Mon, 29 Oct 2001 08:06:54 -0800 (PST) Received: from vilnya.demon.co.uk ([158.152.19.238]) by finch-post-12.mail.demon.net with esmtp (Exim 2.12 #1) id 15yEvz-000G3T-0C; Mon, 29 Oct 2001 16:06:43 +0000 Received: from haveblue (haveblue.rings [10.2.4.5]) by vilnya.demon.co.uk (Postfix) with SMTP id BD4E82E824; Mon, 29 Oct 2001 16:04:05 +0000 (GMT) Message-ID: <005201c16093$7e230d90$0504020a@haveblue> From: "cameron grant" To: "Sean Harding" , References: <20011028154148.A7792@dogcow.org> Subject: Re: Sound problems with NeoMagic NM256AV Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2001 16:05:13 -0000 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2600.0000 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2600.0000 Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > I'm having some trouble getting sound working on my laptop (Dell Latitude > CPi A-366T) with a NeoMagic NM256AV sound card. As a friend of mine had a system, which reproducably showed the data corruption behaviour, I can state for sure, what Soeren told: - It occurs with different cards than SB Live. In this special case it was a SB 128. - The newest BIOS (don't know the exact model of the motherboard, believe to remember it was some MSI with KT133) didn't solve the problem. Only the VIA 4/1 drivers for Win2k or the respective Linux kernel patches solved the problem (no FBSD on this system). Side note: Linux' Reiser FS on this system was damaged beyond any recovery by this data corruption bug. No data available at all. Would ufs/ffs behave better in similar circumstances (i.e. hardware failure)? Has anyone actually seen artsd time out and relinquish the dsp device on FreeBSD? -Jim Durham To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Mon Oct 29 17:29:44 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mail5.nc.rr.com (fe5.southeast.rr.com [24.93.67.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5DEDE37B401; Mon, 29 Oct 2001 17:29:38 -0800 (PST) Received: from stealth.cary.dummynet ([66.26.231.240]) by mail5.nc.rr.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC(5.5.1877.687.68); Mon, 29 Oct 2001 20:29:31 -0500 Received: (from rhh@localhost) by stealth.cary.dummynet (8.11.4/8.11.4) id f9U1TEK02080; Mon, 29 Oct 2001 20:29:14 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from aa8vb@nc.rr.com) X-Authentication-Warning: stealth.cary.dummynet: rhh set sender to aa8vb@nc.rr.com using -f Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2001 20:29:14 -0500 From: Randall Hopper To: Ted Faber Cc: freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG, freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: kern/31445 Message-ID: <20011029202913.A2049@nc.rr.com> References: <20011023080640.A48423@ted.isi.edu> <20011029091037.E31089@ted.isi.edu> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5i In-Reply-To: <20011029091037.E31089@ted.isi.edu>; from faber@ISI.EDU on Mon, Oct 29, 2001 at 09:10:37AM -0800 Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Ted Faber: |On Tue, Oct 23, 2001 at 08:06:40AM -0700, Ted Faber wrote: |> I filed a PR (kern/31445) last night (from my home account) about |> /dev/audio truncating sounds. ... |I found some time this weekend, and posted an initial patch to solve |this problem. You don't need it; Quake3 just tries this when it cannot find libGL. If you get it to work, I'm curious to know if you have sound in Quake3, because my Quake3 is silent since the pcm megacommit in february 2001. (And same symptom with Quake3 derivate Return to Castle Wolfenstein). I decided to have a separate 4.2 installation to have those games with sound. Karel. The noise is obvious, and you can see where the bktr chip aborts the decode and pixel transfers, and the TV card has to restart them (the rows with the horizontally shifted pixels). Your signal may be too weak or too strong for the TV tuner, or not even tuned in right. I assume a TV plugged in right there looks picture perfect? If so... Turn off AFC (Options->AFC), and dial the frequency up and down manually (F9 & F10 by default; your channel will start displaying f... numbers if you're really doing it). Try to tune the channel in better. If still problems, run down to the local Radio Shack (or Estonia equivalent ;-) and get an inexpensive signal amp to plug in behind your TV card -- one that'll let you dial the signal strength up "and down". That's something to try anyway.
