And maybe somebody will wallop me with a clue about Wine. I had limited success with linux_base-6, but once I upgraded to linux_base-7 I was able to install CrossOver as a normal user and then MS Office 2000 Pro. My experience generally resembles that of "Karel J. Bosschaart" , who wrote: >> Interesting, I couldn't resist and tried. I can start any of Word, PowerPoint or Exel, but on top of the application window I get a transient window complaining, "Required registry information is missing and this application cannot run. Please rerun setup to correct this problem." When I click on OK (the only choice...grrrr), the transient closes, and the application closes right behind it, apparently cleanly. Now, I'm darned impressed it gets that far, but it's not really _useful_. That is, it doesn't let me laugh in the teeth of Word and PowerPoint in the presence of my colleagues; the best I can manage is a rueful chuckle under my breath, and they don't pay any attention to that behavior any more. Seriously, I suspect this may be a wine configuration problem, but I don't know much at all about wine. I can find some more time to spend on this if someone will tell me there's hope, but for now I've run out of steam and patience. Good luck to anyone else taking a stab at this. Cheers, Michael -- D. I'd seen _a_ FAQ somewhere, but this one is more complete. Sadly, neither this nor the mailing list archives contained anything (I recognized as) pertaining to my problem. And I'm reluctant to initiate a formal ticket, not wanting to use up any of the goodwill the BSDs seem to enjoy with Codeweavers. After all, they don't claim it works, I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to try it. It would probably be more directly productive for me to go bother the vmware port guys again. :-) At least that would take my mind off the alternative, which is to install Linux and VMware and solve all these problems by midnight GMT. Funny, isn't it, that I'm so irked at MS and their masses (some of whom I must collaborate with) that I won't let them push me even as far toward the mainstream as Linux? Something about noses and faces comes to mind. In a nutshell, I haven't been able to install Office with linux_base-6, while with -7 I still get a vague complaint about the registry contents when running any of the Office apps. The last time I tried vmware3 it failed later on because it was trying to be clever and look for the linux kernel modules directory, which of course doesn't exist on FreeBSD, even with the linux binary emulation port installed :(. I've not have the time to look more closely at this so I'm stuck with a licence that I've paid for, but can't use :(. If you search the mailing list there appears to already be some code for the loadable kernel bits: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=3D24234+26749+/usr/local/ww= w/db/text/2001/freebsd-emulation/20011014.freebsd-emulation The bit that's missing is pulling apart the linux install script to understand how it works and what it does. When I ran the 3.1 binary it complained that the install script hadn't run and produced a configuration file; the install script doesn't complete because it's too linux focussed. Yes/No. I 'ported' the kernel module and got stuck with the userland install thing. If someone can get the userland stuff running as Josef suggested we are a step closer. I might be able to get some cycles to work on it again then.
