Within the thing we call "x86 compatible", we have ia32 and ia64 right? Ia32 doesn't support read AND execute permissions on the memory, as it sees read and execute as the same thing. Has this changed in ia64, so we can make non-executable heaps and stacks? Hope someone will/can answer these. br socketd ps: Please CC to me as I'm not on the list. [Typo: ee870 should be e8870] I'm not aware of any existing machines that are based on the E8870 chipset. Given the nature of ia64, I wouldn't be surprised to see FreeBSD run out of the box on one of those babies or otherwise only need minimal tweaking to get it to work. FreeBSD is known to run with the Intel 460GX and the HP zx1 chipsets (The latter is even less production quality than the former :-) -- Marcel Moolenaar USPA: A-39004 marcel@xcllnt.net To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-ia64" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-ia64 Tue Dec 17 15: 9:25 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 31C5637B401 for ; Tue, 17 Dec 2002 15:09:25 -0800 (PST) Received: from eamail1-out.unisys.com (eamail1-out.unisys.com [192.61.61.99]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 556F143EC5 for ; Tue, 17 Dec 2002 15:09:24 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from kevin.vanmaren@unisys.com) Received: from us-ea-gtwy-6.ea.unisys.com (us-ea-gtwy-6.ea.unisys.com [192.61.146.102]) by eamail1-out.unisys.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id XAA28883; Tue, 17 Dec 2002 23:05:07 GMT Received: by us-ea-gtwy-6.ea.unisys.com with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2656.59) id ; Tue, 17 Dec 2002 17:09:06 -0600 Message-ID: <3FAD1088D4556046AEC48D80B47B478C0101F551@usslc-exch-4.slc.unisys.com> From: "Van Maren, Kevin" To: "'Marcel Moolenaar'" , wu qingbo Cc: ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: RE: can freebsd support intel ee870 chipset? Ah ok, I can (more or less) program in assembly for i386, would I have to learn assembly for ia64 also? Ia64 is the next generation right? Great, then it won't be long before we have non-executable heaps and stacks in FreeBSD....or atleast a syscall to make a process stack/heap non-executable...I hope :-) br socketd To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-ia64" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-ia64 Tue Dec 17 15:25: 4 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6ABC937B401; Tue, 17 Dec 2002 15:25:03 -0800 (PST) Received: from mckinley.corp.yahoo.com (mckinley.corp.yahoo.com [216.145.62.105]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0846143EC5; Tue, 17 Dec 2002 15:25:03 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from peter@freebsd.org) Received: from mckinley.corp.yahoo.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mckinley.corp.yahoo.com (8.12.6/8.12.5) with ESMTP id gBHNP27a055111; Tue, 17 Dec 2002 15:25:02 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from peter@freebsd.org) Received: (from root@localhost) by mckinley.corp.yahoo.com (8.12.6/8.12.5/Submit) id gBHNP2R4055110; Tue, 17 Dec 2002 15:25:02 -0800 (PST) Message-Id: <200212172325.gBHNP2R4055110@mckinley.corp.yahoo.com> From: Peter Wemm Date: Tue, 17 Dec 2002 15:25:02 -0800 (PST) Subject: ia64 tinderbox failure To: current@freebsd.org, ia64@freebsd.org Sender: owner-freebsd-ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org -------------------------------------------------------------- >>> Rebuilding the temporary build tree -------------------------------------------------------------- >>> stage 1: bootstrap tools -------------------------------------------------------------- >>> stage 2: cleaning up the object tree -------------------------------------------------------------- >>> stage 2: rebuilding the object tree -------------------------------------------------------------- >>> stage 2: build tools -------------------------------------------------------------- >>> stage 3: cross tools -------------------------------------------------------------- >>> stage 4: populating /home/tinderbox/ia64/obj/home/tinderbox/ia64/src/ia64/usr/include -------------------------------------------------------------- >>> stage 4: building libraries -------------------------------------------------------------- >>> stage 4: make dependencies -------------------------------------------------------------- >>> stage 4: building everything.. -------------------------------------------------------------- ===> sbin/gbde cc1: warnings being treated as errors /home/tinderbox/ia64/src/sbin/gbde/gbde.c: In function `cmd_init': /home/tinderbox/ia64/src/sbin/gbde/gbde.c:444: warning: `sector_size' might be used uninitialized in this function *** Error code 1 Stop in /home/tinderbox/ia64/src/sbin/gbde. *** Error code 1 Stop in /home/tinderbox/ia64/src/sbin. *** Error code 1 Stop in /home/tinderbox/ia64/src. *** Error code 1 Stop in /home/tinderbox/ia64/src. *** Error code 1 Stop in /home/tinderbox/ia64/src. The platform requires a USB keyboard driver (doesn't have a PS/2 port). It looks like the ia64 GENERIC kernel doesn't have usb or ukbd enabled. But the i386 GENERIC kernel *does* have it enabled. Is it possible to enable it in ia64 GENERIC kernel before the 5.0 release ? Of course, one can attach a serial console and make progress. -Arun To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-ia64" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-ia64 Tue Dec 17 17:57:30 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3F41837B401 for ; Tue, 17 Dec 2002 17:57:29 -0800 (PST) Received: from kayak.xcllnt.net (209-128-86-226.BAYAREA.NET [209.128.86.226]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4D66D43E4A for ; Tue, 17 Dec 2002 17:57:28 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from marcel@xcllnt.net) Received: from dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net (dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net [192.168.4.201]) by kayak.xcllnt.net (8.12.6/8.12.6) with ESMTP id gBI1vRrT083191; Tue, 17 Dec 2002 17:57:27 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from marcel@kayak.pn.xcllnt.net) Received: from dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net (8.12.6/8.12.6) with ESMTP id gBI1wBWg001613; Tue, 17 Dec 2002 17:58:12 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from marcel@dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net) Received: (from marcel@localhost) by dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net (8.12.6/8.12.6/Submit) id gBI1wBFE001612; Tue, 17 Dec 2002 17:58:11 -0800 (PST) Date: Tue, 17 Dec 2002 17:58:11 -0800 From: Marcel Moolenaar To: socketd Cc: ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Memory permissions Message-ID: <20021218015811.GA1583@dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net> References: <200212172315.gBHNF2Bk023467@smtp040.tiscali.dk> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <200212172315.gBHNF2Bk023467@smtp040.tiscali.dk> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.1i Sender: owner-freebsd-ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Wed, Dec 18, 2002 at 12:18:38AM +0100, socketd wrote: > > > On Tue, 17 Dec 2002, Marcel Moolenaar wrote: > > > I have asked in hackers@ but got no answer, so I'll try here. > > > Within the thing we call "x86 compatible", we have ia32 and ia64 right? > > > > No. ia64 (formally known as IPF) is not compatible with ia32 (or i386). > > ia64 does have a ia32 compatibility mode that allows one to run ia32 > > binaries on ia64, but it's an emulation. > > Ah ok, I can (more or less) program in assembly for i386, would I have to > learn assembly for ia64 also? I'll look into it, The problem was that USB used to lock up the Tiger4 system I had for a while. Other than that (it was an 870 based system) it seemed to work fine. It exposed a whole new bunch of bugs that we had not run into on the 460GX/itanium1 boxes though. :-) Cheers, -Peter -- Peter Wemm - peter@wemm.org; peter@FreeBSD.org; peter@yahoo-inc.com "All of this is for nothing if we don't go to the stars" - JMS/B5 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-ia64" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-ia64 Tue Dec 17 20:15:56 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D026937B401 for ; Tue, 17 Dec 2002 20:15:55 -0800 (PST) Received: from kayak.xcllnt.net (209-128-86-226.bayarea.net [209.128.86.226]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 880FA43ED8 for ; Tue, 17 Dec 2002 20:15:54 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from marcel@xcllnt.net) Received: from dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net (dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net [192.168.4.201]) by kayak.xcllnt.net (8.12.6/8.12.6) with ESMTP id gBI4FsrT083438; Tue, 17 Dec 2002 20:15:54 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from marcel@kayak.pn.xcllnt.net) Received: from dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net (8.12.6/8.12.6) with ESMTP id gBI4GcWg001949; Tue, 17 Dec 2002 20:16:38 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from marcel@dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net) Received: (from marcel@localhost) by dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net (8.12.6/8.12.6/Submit) id gBI4GbMl001948; Tue, 17 Dec 2002 20:16:37 -0800 (PST) Date: Tue, 17 Dec 2002 20:16:37 -0800 From: Marcel Moolenaar To: Peter Wemm Cc: Arun Sharma , ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: can freebsd support intel ee870 chipset? We do have problems on a couple of fronts that may block a successful install. I would just grab the RC2 bits and try it out. This will tell us right away about issues and we can address them in the order they show up. This would solve the "where to begin" problem as well :-) Some hot topics: o USB: The UHCI host controller seems to hang on ia64. My first guess was that it had something to do with the SMC hub on port 1, but after some debugging I think that it's the UHCI itself that wedges the machine. Anyway, we have USB disabled by default. Use the serial console if you don't have a legacy keyboard and VGA controller, o USB: We don't support the EHCI host controller yet. The EHCI is the controller I would expect to find in new 64-bit boxes. If the Tiger4 has the high speed USB logo somewhere, then we can be sure it has the EHCI and we need to port EHCI from NetBSD (they already seem to have it). -- Marcel Moolenaar USPA: A-39004 marcel@xcllnt.net To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-ia64" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-ia64 Sat Dec 21 10: 1:37 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 55F0D37B405 for ; Sat, 21 Dec 2002 10:01:35 -0800 (PST) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C51AF43EDC for ; Sat, 21 Dec 2002 10:01:34 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from fenner+portsurvey@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (fenner@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.6/8.12.6) with ESMTP id gBLI1YNS078617 for ; Sat, 21 Dec 2002 10:01:34 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from fenner+portsurvey@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from fenner@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.6/8.12.6/Submit) id gBLI1Y3h078616; Sat, 21 Dec 2002 10:01:34 -0800 (PST) Date: Sat, 21 Dec 2002 10:01:34 -0800 (PST) Message-Id: <200212211801.gBLI1Y3h078616@freefall.freebsd.org> From: fenner@freebsd.org (Bill "distfiles" Fenner) To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Subject: FreeBSD ports: 1 unfetchable distfiles: emulators/ski Reply-To: ports@freebsd.org Sender: owner-freebsd-ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Dear freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org, You are listed as the FreeBSD port maintainer for 1 port whose distfiles [or main web pages] are not fetchable from their MASTER_SITES. Could you please visit http://people.freebsd.org/~fenner/portsurvey/freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org.html and correct the problems listed there? The individual port with a problem is emulators/ski. Note that the main port web page, as listed in the WWW: line of the pkg-descr, is checked just as though it was a port distfile. This is an unfortunate side effect of the architecture of the distfile survey reporting tool, but if you see a distfile being reported as not fetchable that's not actually a distfile, see if it's from the pkg-descr. If you have already corrected the problems and submitted a PR, please accept my thanks and apologies for the delay in getting the fixes into the tree. This reminder is created automatically and does not (yet) have a way to know if a PR fixing the problem has been submitted. Please do *NOT* send your response to me directly; I do not always have time to commit your fix; please instead submit a PR via 'send-pr' so it doesn't get lost. Problems are usually of two types: 1. The software package has been upgraded and the version in the port has been removed. The best solution to this problem is to upgrade the port to the most current version of the software package. If you are a FreeBSD committer, then you can just upgrade the port directly. If not, you should create the updated port on your own machine, test it (and maybe even run "portlint" on it), and then use "send-pr" to submit a "diff -uNr old-port updated-port". If you added or deleted any files, please make an explicit note of it. 2. The mirror site being used no longer contains the software package in question, or no longer exists. Solutions include: a) If there are other mirror sites, just remove the bad site from the list. (Make sure that what appears to be a bad site isn't actually a problem of type 1, upgrade) b) If the README or other support files in the software documentation mention where to get the software package, use one of those sites. c) Use ftpsearch (http://ftpsearch.ntnu.no/ftpsearch) or other search engines to find another place to get the original DISTFILES. Make sure that you don't pick a FreeBSD distfiles mirror -- if you can't find any other places where the file exists, it can be a LOCAL_PORT or you can simply comment out the MASTER_SITES= line, with a comment explaining why. Once you have a solution, use "send-pr" to submit a "diff -u" of the Makefile. Note that this isn't an urgent issue, as people who try to build the port now will just fall back to the FreeBSD distfiles mirror. Please just put it on your list to do and get to it when you have time. These messages will continue to arrive twice a month until the fix is committed, as a reminder.
