You mean just usb keyboard and usb mouse influence RC2 to install. But the freebsd 5.0 kernel for ia64 is ok, and did not to modify anything. Just usb problems. Am I right? Then what difference about hp zx1 and intel e8870 chipset in ia64 for freebsd. Or this problem is solved by efi? Am I right? Because our lab tiger 4 machine is just on the way, we have not got yet. Just usb problems. Am I right? I'm not quite sure what you mean, but USB causes the kernel to hang on both the BigSur prototype and Tiger machines. I think this is specific to the UHCI host controller. For this reason 5.0-RC1 and 5.0-RC2 don't have USB support in the kernel. 5.0-RELEASE is due in Januray (RC=Release Candidates), so we have a couple of weeks to try to find the cause and fix it in time for 5.0-RELEASE. Unless we can track it down we probably want to disable support for at least the UHCI controller. That way one can at least boot and install with a serial console. A kernel that hangs during boot is useless in all cases. > Then what difference about > hp zx1 and intel e8870 chipset in ia64 for freebsd. At this time the only difference is that the zx1 does not have ISA emulation. From a chipset point of view, FreeBSD does not take full advantage of the abilities of the chipset yet. > Or this problem > is solved by efi? Am I right? EFI doesn't really play a role. It's mostly ACPI, SAL and PAL that have well-defined behaviour and create the necessary abstraction. -- Marcel Moolenaar USPA: A-39004 marcel@xcllnt.net To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-ia64" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-ia64 Mon Dec 23 20:41:36 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7572137B401 for ; Mon, 23 Dec 2002 20:41:35 -0800 (PST) Received: from dragon.nuxi.com (trang.nuxi.com [66.93.134.19]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B62D443EDA for ; Mon, 23 Dec 2002 20:41:34 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from obrien@NUXI.com) Received: from dragon.nuxi.com (obrien@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by dragon.nuxi.com (8.12.6/8.12.2) with ESMTP id gBO4fTdD017653; Mon, 23 Dec 2002 20:41:29 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from obrien@dragon.nuxi.com) Received: (from obrien@localhost) by dragon.nuxi.com (8.12.6/8.12.6/Submit) id gBO4eECq017648; Mon, 23 Dec 2002 20:40:14 -0800 (PST) Date: Mon, 23 Dec 2002 20:40:14 -0800 From: "David O'Brien" To: Arun Sharma Cc: ia64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: cvsup binary package for ia64 ? But I only tried with the version that uses the newer m3 implementation vs the older m3 implementation from DEC. Part of the solution was to make the data segment executable for i386 binaries. This can be done by flipping a bit in the elf header, but I added an #ifdef'ed hack in the kernel.. See kern/imgact_elf.c, around line 720.. /* * Some x86 binaries assume read == executable, * notably the M3 runtime and therefore cvsup */ if (prot & VM_PROT_READ) prot |= VM_PROT_EXECUTE; It seems that ia64 trips up x86 binaries when they actually get what they ask for. Interestingly, the x86-64 cpu also adds a NX (no-execute) bit, so the same problem could exist there. Anyway, this may not be all of the problems. I dont know how faithful our emulation of the i386 signal context stuff is.. These hacks got me further along, but not far enough. From what I can remember (I'm on holiday and not in a position to do much FreeBSD stuff), the release notes should be pretty much OK with the existing conditional compilation. The hardware notes need some major work (principally, the part that talks about what CPUs are supported, but I bet the list of various disk devices, NICs, etc. isn't complete). A good start would be to sit down with hardcopies of the hardware notes for ia64 and one other architecture (I recommend either i386 or alpha) and compare them. I'm pretty sure the install docs could use some work too. I can help once I return (early January)...I have lots of release docs knowledge but not much ia64 fu. Bruce. The interface change and the above change just give a header length that is not directly usably by any of its users. The header length is what must be passed to printf in %*s formats; it should have type int since that is what printf takes; any bounds checking of it belongs in getbsize() (but in practice it is a small positive number since anything else would give preposterous formatting, so there is never a problem with its bounds). Other users of getbsize() in the src tree but perhaps not ones in ports have been broken to match the interface breakage. The usual breakage is to cast the size_t to int without checking bounds. > BTW, the tabbing in this area of the source file is messed up. indent(1) with my .indent.pro does a fairly good job of fixing these without introducing more bugs.
