If someone wants to install this kit they need to accept the license themselves. It is your own responsibility to read and understand the licenses you accept. You are free not to install the 1.4 release. We could debate the need for an additional warning about this in the post-install message. On second thought: if the user accepted the license without reading it, would he or she read the post-install message? I really doubt it. I think that posts on -java, slashdot and daily daemonnews will raise awareness. Other than that, this is an issue between Java and it's users. Nothing for FreeBSD to mix with. I agree with you that they are crossing into my personal space here and I will read the license agreements from Sun next time. This is one to think about. This is probably legalease around feature they included for the sake of remaining competitive with other platforms that do the same thing (example: .NET). I can't see Sun knowingly releasing updates that violate the current API, but I could see them using it for security updates. Sun mainly targets Microsoft as a competitor, thereby probably trying to institute an auto-update system to compete with the one that ships with Windows XP (thus .NET). But I agree that pressure should be applied to get Sun to at least make these updates opt-in. I'm curious if this auto-updating mechanism is present in the source. You'll notice the license for WebStart includes this as well and can be used with various JRE's (I think 1.2.2 or higher). One of the features of WebStart is that it can use a JRE specified in the jnlp file hence needing to automatically download software from Sun if the one specified is not available. Furthermore, it automatically updates the software you are running hence needing to automatically download and execute other software. Since 1.4 includes WebStart its license also includes these provisions. I was waiting for some decision about the "unified" way of porting java libs but I can change it later anyway. Log4j is a nice library to try the porting proposal as it uses ant, is a standalone lib and is used by several other libs. Let me know what you think of it. It is exclusively up to the >user to decide whether using products covered by the Sun license is >acceptable or not. > >-J > Not that I have any say in this :) but I agree. First, the user has to agree to the license when he installs the JDK, so if they don't agree, all they have to do is just press N. Second, I think it's realted to WebStart, just like it was mentioned before. Third, it does not really bother me, because thinking logically, the SDK would have to run some kind of daemon/service to check for updates (and it would ahve to run as root in order to update it's files, which you can easily prevent), which you can easily see if it is or not. If it did check for updates each time it ran, it would be quite unefficient, and again is easily tracked down and if you don't really want it to do that, you can just firewall the IPs it tries to access, but than again, if you don't want it to do that, don't agree to the license. I don't see any problem with that. mayo > > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Sat Sep 7 5: 7:56 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E99F737B400 for ; Sat, 7 Sep 2002 05:07:53 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ns.gddsn.org.cn (ns.gddsn.org.cn [210.21.6.33]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 080C243E6A for ; Sat, 7 Sep 2002 05:07:50 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from hwh@ns.gddsn.org.cn) Received: from mail.gddsn.org.cn (gw [210.21.6.34]) by ns.gddsn.org.cn (Postfix) with ESMTP id AEBDC659 for ; Sat, 7 Sep 2002 20:07:25 +0800 (CST) Message-ID: <3D79EBFD.6060202@mail.gddsn.org.cn> Date: Sat, 07 Sep 2002 20:07:25 +0800 From: Huang wen hui User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; FreeBSD i386; zh-CN; rv:1.0.0) Gecko/20020728 X-Accept-Language: zh-cn, zh-tw, en-us MIME-Version: 1.0 To: java Subject: classloader do not search jre/lib/ext using hotspot vm. HotSpot is largely for developer's at this time and you have to make a significant technical effort to compile it. I suggest waiting for it to hit -stable before doing anything with it. It does build with a couple of modifications that were omitted from an incomplete commit. Make those changes and it'll work. bill To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Sat Sep 7 17:26:50 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A7CF437B400 for ; Sat, 7 Sep 2002 17:26:48 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ns.gddsn.org.cn (ns.gddsn.org.cn [210.21.6.33]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3435F43E42 for ; Sat, 7 Sep 2002 17:26:48 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from hwh@ns.gddsn.org.cn) Received: from mail.gddsn.org.cn (gw [210.21.6.34]) by ns.gddsn.org.cn (Postfix) with ESMTP id 79A3050; Sun, 8 Sep 2002 08:01:19 +0800 (CST) Message-ID: <3D7A934F.7070503@mail.gddsn.org.cn> Date: Sun, 08 Sep 2002 08:01:19 +0800 From: Huang wen hui User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; FreeBSD i386; zh-CN; rv:1.0.0) Gecko/20020728 X-Accept-Language: zh-cn, zh-tw, en-us MIME-Version: 1.0 To: "Lapinski, Michael (Research)" Cc: 'Bill Huey' , Huang wen hui , java Subject: Re: classloader do not search jre/lib/ext using hotspot vm. My SMP dev machine is down courtesy of a failing IBM drive. I can't do anything about it at this moment, but I'll look at it when it's all back up and running again. ;) How's HotSpot running for you under -current otherwise ? bill To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Sat Sep 7 19:16:34 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DE70E37B400 for ; Sat, 7 Sep 2002 19:16:31 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ns.gddsn.org.cn (ns.gddsn.org.cn [210.21.6.33]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6F93843E6A for ; Sat, 7 Sep 2002 19:16:31 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from hwh@ns.gddsn.org.cn) Received: from mail.gddsn.org.cn (gw [210.21.6.34]) by ns.gddsn.org.cn (Postfix) with ESMTP id 58D4E50; Sun, 8 Sep 2002 10:16:30 +0800 (CST) Message-ID: <3D7AB2FE.6030903@mail.gddsn.org.cn> Date: Sun, 08 Sep 2002 10:16:30 +0800 From: Huang wen hui User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; FreeBSD i386; zh-CN; rv:1.0.0) Gecko/20020728 X-Accept-Language: zh-cn, zh-tw, en-us MIME-Version: 1.0 To: "Bill Huey (Hui)" Cc: "Lapinski, Michael (Research)" , Huang wen hui , java Subject: Re: classloader do not search jre/lib/ext using hotspot vm. I can use JB7 under -current without any problem. I still got some problem with hotspot: 1. thread.sleep() not work correctly. 2. tomcat accept user request very slowly, also because thread.sleep(). 3. java plug-in not work under mozlla. 4. java vm will core dump if application( /usr/local/jdk1.3.1/demo/applets/ArcTest) contain java.awt.TextField and XIM server is available. classic vm also have same problem. --hwh To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message
