I'd been meaning to do the standard DA_Q_NO_6_BYTE hack last time I left off with this. Although umass attaches to the device, the rest of the attach process doesn't go as expected (even when I do sysctl kern.cam.da.no_6_byte=1). For example:- umass1: M-Systems DiskOnKey, rev 1.10/2.00, addr 8 umass1: Get Max Lun not supported (SHORT_XFER) triage:~ % s camcontrol devlist at scbus0 target 0 lun 0 (da0,pass0) at scbus0 target 1 lun 0 (da1,pass1) triage:~ % s camcontrol inquiry 0:1:0 Exit 1 (Times out). Occasionally I'll see BBB resets being initiated by the umass driver. I've tried this with the DiskOnKey plugged into both a downstream hub and directly into the root hub itself. Running udesc_dump against the DiskOnKey when it's plumbed in as a ugen device gets interesting:- [..] Standard Interface Descriptor: [..] bInterfaceClass 08 bInterfaceSubClass 06 bInterfaceProtocol 50 [..] So it's being picked up by the umass driver based on its primary interface class and subclass, and 0x50 = 80 decimal, which is UPROTO_MASS_BBB_P, which means umass thinks it's an Iomega Zip 100. Since I got my MemoryStick and CompactFlash support sorted out, this isn't a priority for me, but if anyone else wants to have a shot, I will help where I can. I tried to get it up using 'device wi', but failed. I was not surprised, because this specific card was not listed as supported by that driver. What can I do, besides writing a driver myself, to get this card to be supported? I can do _a bit_ of coding, but don't have the experience yet to write the driver on my own within reasonable time.... If anyone is interested, I can mail the output of 'pccardc dumpcis', which I am guessing would be a reasonable start. The exception to the rule would seem to be devices behind USB->ATA bridges; some of the bridge chips on the market (OnSpec for example) implement a protocol which is nonstandard and is composed of the ATA task register file writes one would normally make in the ISA or PCI i/o address space. The devices which use this are generally SmartMedia or downmarket CompactFlash/multi-I/O devices. I discussed this with Joe Karthausen earlier this month, and it seems that in order to support these devices, some architectural changes would be needed in order to allow the ATA driver to operate on top of the USB bus. If you're interested, I wrote a functional but incomplete driver for a similar device, the Prolific Technology PL2307 bridge. I just implemented the conversion for a minimal set of ATA commands in the driver itself; it would obviously be better to have the ATA layer in a separate driver though. any advice on the following just duped a laptop disk with dump|restore put it into new notebook i get invalid partition i get the 1st stage boot prompt with boot failure message and the expected default that failed 0:ad(0,a)/boot/loader the duped drive has the FBSD slice as ad0s1e if i say at this point 0:ad(0,e)/boot/loader OR if i say; 0:ad(0,e)/kernel i can boot to my custom compiled kernel sometimes BUT NOT always i can boot with just saying; 0:ad(0,e) i have tried making a boot.config, then a boot.conf file with 0:ad(0,e)/boot/loader in there doesn't work, i still have to boot it manually by saying the exact same thing as above i've tried putting a reference in loader.conf to try to get the loader to reckognize boot.config by just specifying the file name /boot/config in loader.conf but maybe i don't have the right syntax even tried doing a disklabel -B /dev/ad0s1, i thought maybe there weren't any boot blocks, tried disklabel -w -B also tried editing the disklabel disklabel -e ad0 and tried changing the partition label from e to a but even as root the system wouldn't lemme write to the disk when editing i finished fresh out of ideas, anyone know how to do this so it boots by itself again? HOW/where DO I SPECIFY THAT ad0 s1e, is the right place to boot from with out doing this manually each and every time? i haven't tried doing anything w/ boot0cfg but i figure i'm past that point anyways if i get to where i'm now getting to..

Hi,

I'm having trouble getting my soundcard = working=20 in FreeBSD 4.6.2.  It is detected correctly on=20 bootup:

pcm0: <VIA VT82C686A> port=20 0x1850-0x1853,0x1854-0x1857,0x1000-0x10ff irq 5 at device 7.5 on=20 pci0

However when I try to play an mp3 = in xmms it=20 plays but no sound is produced.  I tried mixer `mixer -s`, but that = didn't=20 help either. The volume is at 100%.  I also attempted to use = cat=20 somefile.wav > /dev/dsp, there is a pause about the length of the = file and=20 then it goes back to the prompt.  Here is what pciconf -lv=20 reads:

pcm0@pci0:7:5: = class=3D0x040100=20 card=3D0x00970e11 chip=3D0x30581106 rev=3D0x50 hdr=3D0x00
vendor =3D = 'VIA Technologies=20 Inc'
device =3D 'VT82C686/A/B AC'97 Audio Codec'
class =3D = multimedia=20
subclass =3D audio

It seems the sound is muted or = something, but the=20 mixer does not report this.  I tried different volume levels, but = cannot=20 hear anything.

Thank you for any help,
Dominik

The >hang has gone away and the bugs have been banished. How new is "new enough"? With a 4.6-STABLE built on August 26th, I find that I still need to have hw.pcic.ignore_function_1=1 otherwise the kernel locks hard upon initializing wi0. (By "locks hard", I mean that even my PC's reset button doesn't work; I need to power cycle at the wall switch!) >: Andy Sparrow then suggested that I *also* add >: hw.pcic.intr_path=1 >: hw.pcic.irq=0 > >This is bad. For a pci card this cannot work, unless you've hacked >the pci card to funnel the serial interrupt line to your >south-bridge's serial interrupt line. You must use intr_path of 2. OK, good - this is progress. If I change my "/boot/loader.conf" to: hw.pcic.ignore_function_1=1 hw.pcic.intr_path=2 hw.pcic.irq=0 I find that I "wi0" now gets enabled OK. *However*, with this change, the kernel wedges if I try to enable the ESS sound card. I.e., if I run kldload snd_maestro3 the console prints out pcm0: port 0x1000-0x10ff irq 5 at device 13.0 on pci0 and then the kernel promptly hangs. Similarly, if I put snd_maestro3_load="YES" in "/boot/loader.conf", the kernel hangs on booting, at the point that I've marked ">>>>>>" in the "dmesg" output below. >: So, any ideas for what I can do to make both my "wi0" device, and my ESS >: sound card, work?? > >I'm not sure what is causing the deadly embrace between the two.
