Obviously FreeBSD or Linux aren't officially supported. But I guess all I need is a tool to scan for SSIDs. Right now I can do `wicontrol -L` as root and I think it detects APs. I also tried dstumbler when it was mentioned on this list last week, but for some reason when I tried it today, like with `sudo dstumbler wi0`, it just crashes my laptop. I was playing with ifconfig and wicontrol and it crashed my laptop also. so i guess my question is, has anybody used one of those public Wi-Fi netwo= rk before here? and anybody else having problems with dstumbler with wi0 (i ha= ve a linksys wpc11 pc card)... ?? I think wi should detects APs and choose one for me, coz when I first setup my laptop, I didn't even have to specify an SSID and it just picked it up... thanks! /ayn --=20 andrew y ng http://andrewng.com gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys 9BFC594C fingerprint : 46a1 29ff 893a 0381 dc81 1e1e bed8 e882 9bfc 594c=20 --MGYHOYXEY6WxJCY8 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iEYEARECAAYFAj4Ht60ACgkQvtjogpv8WUxttACfez3LrBAdHIWHmIYXeKB4KNTE wAcAoKbjmvsZ/2qEIIGKS45az4GrsY+b =xDZa -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --MGYHOYXEY6WxJCY8-- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Mon Dec 23 18:49: 7 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 898D537B401 for ; Mon, 23 Dec 2002 18:49:06 -0800 (PST) Received: from electricrain.com (electricrain.com [64.71.143.226]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D5A8343EE6 for ; Mon, 23 Dec 2002 18:49:05 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from fuzzy@electricrain.com) Received: (qmail 8363 invoked by uid 540); 24 Dec 2002 02:48:59 -0000 Date: Mon, 23 Dec 2002 18:48:59 -0800 From: Chris Doherty To: Andrew Y Ng Cc: mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: dstumbler crashes freebsd Message-ID: <20021224024859.GE12744@zot.electricrain.com> Reply-To: chris-freebsd@randomcamel.net References: <20021224012605.GA31812@AndrewNg.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20021224012605.GA31812@AndrewNg.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4i X-Operating-System: XEmacs X-Koan: mu. I've used dstumbler on 4.7-STABLE FreeBSD 4.7-STABLE #14: Wed Dec 18 07:53:23 PST 2002 with wi driving a Lucent Orinoco card without any problems, and it works fine (dwepdump doesn't seem to work with that card, but that's a different problem). wi also auto-associates for me. I'm now convinced that Linksys has changed the chipset/firmware on the WMP11. I installed the card on a Win2000 box and installed the Intersil utilities and the Linksys 1.4.9 firmware. I tried to flash the older 1.4.9 firmware without success. The Intersil utilities do not recognize the card as a Prism. I'll order the Netgear MA311 which is around $55 after the mail-in rebate. I have a 2645 as well (it's a 600E), and I experience this as well. sadly, I have no insight, since I haven't investigated--even with APM turned off, the screen does go entirely black when I close the lid, so most of the time I just do that. > Furthermore I'd like to know the most elegant way to turn sound on on an > TP600 (Type 2645). How did you solve this issue. I have this in my kernel file: device pcm options PNPBIOS for 4.7-STABLE FreeBSD 4.7-STABLE #14: Wed Dec 18 07:53:23 PST 2002 there's no problems running, but there is a seemingly intractable bug in the interaction of the sound driver and APM--if you suspend the system, sound doesn't work when it wakes up. I asked freebsd-mobile@ and the information (including from Warner Losh) was that the pcm driver is not APM-aware, and I'm not sure if it's even possible to fix. I also haven't had any luck running pcm/csa as loadable modules, although other people did, so it's possible I gave up too soon. I was going to suggest checking the archives, but I can't find the threads. maybe you'd have better luck. To recover, I switch to a text console and back. I think the BIOS is doing some power saving, and this could perhaps be turned off with the 'ps2.exe' program, or adjusted to be longer. Curiously, this problem only appeared when I swapped TFT panels (the whole top half) with a 2645-41U. I find that it goes into this backlight-only mode after resume, but that if X activates the screensaver it goes all black, and then the shift key brings it back. There are several issues with sound (all from memory and a bit fuzzy): There was a 'csa' pci driver that attached the sound chip, and one has to remove this to make it work. See http://www.cse.ucsc.edu/~dkulp/fbsd/laptop.html#notes118 for details and a kernel config (thanks to Kevin once again). The sound driver does not save/restore the mixer levels across suspend/resume, so when it comes back they are zero. This is a SMOP. The chip in the 600E (2645-4AU, don't know about 600s (-41U at least)) has a third set of registers with a funky extra-indirect interface to get at them, and the mic gain is there instead of the usual place for similar chips. AFAIK, this only affects recording. All recent BIOS releases have been fine. There was a bug in early BIOS releases for several A, X, and T ThinkPads that would cause a system lock-up when any partition with the final nibble of 0x5 was detected. FreeBSD uses 0xA5, and was caught by this. IBM put out a fixed BIOS that worked, but the next update, just a few days later, re-introduced the bug. It was removed again, as I recall, about 2 weeks later and has not re-appeared. If you have a remotely current version of BIOS on an A, R, T, or X series ThinkPad, you should be fine. (I am sending this from my T30 with bios updated about a month ago from the delivered BIOS which also worked fine.) R. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Ernest O.
