I'm running FBSD 4.4 and trying to load the X environment only (no KDE, Gnome, ...). On startx the monitor pops, then there's a brief glimpse of X (about a second), then the big disappointment - nothing. A couple of days ago I had KDE running passibly, but now, trying to run just the X environment, xserver fails. I'm confused. I've been through the XFree documentation on http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.6/SiS3.html, and played around with the options listed there, but still no X. One interesting option btw is the (**) SVGA: Option "xaa_benchmark" -- see below -- which dumps the extra benchmarking data to the bottom of the startx dump (starting at "CPU to framebuffer ..."). I don't know if this benchmark data is useful. My questions could be summarized as follows: 1. Why does X work with KDE, but not without? this seems a little counter-intuitive 2. At the end of the startx dump, what does "^M" mean? curious 3. Anyone tried Xfree version 4.x? I'm going to try Gnome, WindowMaker and Blackbox next, but I thought I'd try and get some answers regarding X first. startx --------- XFree86 Version 3.3.6 / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6300) Release Date: xx November 2000 If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting problems. The ``FreeBSD Documentation Project Primer'' explains what you want to know about the way FreeBSD documentation is written. Look for it at: http://www.FreeBSD.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/fdp-primer/ Also, keep in mind that if reading the FDP Primer leaves you with questions, then it's probably a bug in the documentation. The 'qt-designer' (IDE) that comes in the ports want qt version qt-2.3.1_1. the 'qt-architect' (dialog editor) wants qt version qt1-1.45_1. These from what i understand is two different versions of the same program. Even though, none of them is available anywhere. The qt toolkit version is currently 'qt-3...' this is the version of the lattest tarball from the qt homepage : http://www.trolltech.com which for some reason failed to compile... Because qt is one of the best qui toolkits available + IDE and is also cross-platform (win98, nt, linux, sol, etc) and i'd realy like to use it, can you tell me if i can ask anywhere if a port for qt3 is under development. i'm gonna send my error messages to the qt mailing list anyway, but if there is a port soon there is no point strugling... i use freebsd-4.5-PRERELEASE built a week ago (cvsup) so i suppose my ports tree is quite recent. any help and directions would be much appreciated... Unless your cvsup included ports-all, it didn't update your ports tree. The build itself doesn't do anything to the ports tree, so you may want to get the lastest ports with the ports-supfile. It is under development, but since there are no programs currently using it, I assume it's just waiting until KDE-3 gets released. Depending on what you want to do, and how much time you want to devote to doing it, there are several ways to do this: 1. Do a 'make clean' from /usr/ports/ and go out for lunch, dinner, and a movie. Might be done by the time you get back. :) j/k 2. Write a shell script to step through all the sub-directories doing 'make clean'. This isn't my idea of fun, though, and simply reproduces what #1 does. 3. Write a shell script to delete "/usr/ports/*/*/work/". This should be faster than either of the above, and can be extended to delete "/usr/ports/distfiles/*". 4. Install the excellent portupgrade port and use the included portsclean util. This will do #3 for you atuomagically. Very handy. I have a shell script that does #4, a cvsup of the ports tree, rebuilds the INDEX database, and performs a check for outdated installed ports(via portversion -v). Every Monday, I get to work with an e-mail telling me how up-to-date my machine is. :) Very useful little package, portupgrade. If you use the ports tree, then I find it to be a "must-have". Well, as a matter of fact that's exactly what 'make clean' will do, if you run it from /usr/ports :-) Faster ways can be crafted with careful find/xargs/rm usage, like for instance: # cd /usr/ports # find . -type d | grep 'work$' | xargs rm -fr but 'rm -fr' is a dangerous thing too use, and you should avoid playing around with find and rm, if you 're not sure of what each command you issue as root will do. - Giorgos To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Tue Jan 8 0:48:48 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from web20804.mail.yahoo.com (web20804.mail.yahoo.com [216.136.226.193]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id BA69F37B416 for ; Tue, 8 Jan 2002 00:48:45 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: <20020108084845.12198.qmail@web20804.mail.yahoo.com> Received: from [194.126.113.102] by web20804.mail.yahoo.com via HTTP; Tue, 08 Jan 2002 00:48:45 PST Date: Tue, 8 Jan 2002 00:48:45 -0800 (PST) From: Rene Pall Subject: internal modem To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org can i install an internal modem on freebsd. i have the drivers for linux on the drivers disc of the modem. it's a pci 56k modem (on com3 as usual). could anyone please help me through that process or just point me in the right direction. thanks in advance.. rene __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Nonetheless... You only need one or the other. Actually, since Qt has such nice layout widget, you don't really need either. My recommendation is QtArchitect, but since QtDesigner comes with Qt, you can try that out as well. Since there is no port for the latest QtArchitect, I would grab the latest version and build it yourself (http://qtarch.sourceforge.net/). p.s. If you wish to make a port for QtArchitect, let me know *offlist* and I can help you out. > appart from that, do you know of any other gui toolkits with IDE and > widget drag n' drop designers available for freebsd? If you want to do KDE programming, look at KDevelop. You can use it for any C/C++ programming, and the gui layout tool works for either KDE or pure Qt. But you may want to learn how to do it the "unix way": different tools for different jobs. I use XEmacs for all my editing, xterm for running make, and QtArchitect for widget layout (if I don't do it by hand). Some people call these DSP modems. They cost a whole lot more at the store, so I went to the local computer junk store (every town has one) and got a couple of them for 25 dollars. Look for the Com settings on the card, that is usually a good sign. It also helps if you can disable PNP. -Steve p.s. An external modem, although junky is an awesome option. Even borrow one. You can see the lights a flashin' when there is activity on the port. This makes it a little easier when you are first learning how to set it up. I've been tasked with setting up a dial-in server, so that people can dial in to a machine here at work, and then use that server to connect to a webserver. Simple, yes? Hundreds of people do it already. But I've been tring all day and have been having no luck. If anyone has successfully done this, I'd appreciate any helpful docco that I can try before I ask on question or elsewhere. PS. I did try the man page and the handbook, but while the man page does walk you though it step by step, there is no troubleshooting info for When Things Go Wrong. At first we tried using Emerging Technologies's bandwidth managing program but it hasn't been very good for a newbie like me. So I am looking into using IPFW to do the limiting. Now I am trying to setup the box to be a firewall and I want to do it statically. Now I was wondering if there is a tutoral or HOWTO online that can help me with the kernel configuration to make it static, since I don't feel like having to start the firewall everytime the box is restarted. Any help would be much appreciated and thanks in advance. Also, note that the "mformat" command referred to on that same page is not part of the base system.  It is a part of the mtools port (/usr/ports/emulators/mtools/) which is discussed on page 289. > I thought I might try # disklabel but my brain > began to melt after the first couple of paragraphs > of that man page. > > Could you either link me to an easy explaination > or give me the command line? Take a look at "man newfs_msdos".  It has an example command for creating an msdos filesystem on a formatted floppy disk.  Just follow the operations described in the book on pages 286-288 and substitute "newfs_msdos" for "newfs".  Here's a typical scenario for creating/using an msdos floppy disk: k6-2# fdformat /dev/rfd0 Format 1440K floppy `/dev/rfd0'? (y/n): y Processing VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV done. k6-2# disklabel -w -r /dev/rfd0 fd1440 k6-2# newfs_msdos -f 1440 -L foo fd0 /dev/fd0: 2847 sectors in 2847 FAT12 clusters (512 bytes/cluster) bps=512 spc=1 res=1 nft=2 rde=224 sec=2880 mid=0xf0 spf=9 spt=18 hds=2 hid=0 k6-2# mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt k6-2# cd /mnt k6-2# cp /usr/home/rpratt/somenotes.txt ./ k6-2# ls -l total 1 -rwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  168 Jan 10 14:05 somenote.txt k6-2# cd /usr/home/rpratt k6-2#  umount /mnt   (you can't umount if you're in the /mnt directory) You can now take the floppy and read/write to it in a windows/dos environment. This should get you going. Good indication of the state -stable is in and lets you decide whether to upgrade or not. 20 people complaining about broken stuff is not the time to upgrade. (but then again, isn't that always the case on stable :) ) > > I've been tracking -stable for at least two years now. > I do this about once every two or three months. But things to tend to get mucked up everynow and then. (like ppp last year). If you're just doing this at home for fun, the impact of such an event, in the worst case is unlikely to be more serious than some minor annoyances and/or tearing of hair, or maybe even a rise in blood pressure :). On the other hand, do it on a production machine that many people rely on, and people _will_ be after your scalp. I would say that the STABLE moniker is best taken with a grain of salt. I'd practice ungrading to a release version first. _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Company Background

Wasatch Pharmaceutical, Inc. is a fourteen year o= ld company with a record of outstanding achievements in the field of Derma= tology.  Under the name of its subsidiary, American Institute of Skin= Care (AISC), Wasatch has operated two prototype clinics for the la= st five years where the products and medical therapies have been tested an= d proven on hundreds of patients.  The Company's activities have been= centered on research in the area of serious skin diseases.  A= concurrent discovery and benefit is WSCH's dramatic success in the area o= f skin rejuvenation.  Seeing the high growth potential from major fun= ding, WSCH elected to become a public company less than two years a= go.

Wasatch's major successes i= n the area of skin diseases include:

Cystic Acne, Eczema= , Seborrhea, Contact Dermatitis, Molluscum, Folliculitis, Acne Rosacea and= less prevalent skin diseases.

Interestingly, the= se skin disorders account for more than 70% of all business in the = field of dermatology for which there are very few (if any) safe, effective= therapies like those developed by Wasatch.

Because the th= erapies developed by Wasatch dominate this area of medicine, WSCH h= as elected to market its products via company-owned clinics throughout the= United States.  This decision has resulted in the establishment of <= b>two research clinics
in Utah for the purpose of implementing procedu= res within the clinics pursuant to testing and confirming the results that= were achieved in past clinical trials.  Due to its success rate o= f 90% on hundreds of patients over a five year period, WSCH's clinics = are now on line with insurance providers independent of HMOs.  Effort= s to establish Preferred Provider ship status with HMOs are presently bein= g pursued.

Wasatch Pharmaceutical Inc. Announc= es a New Physician Marketing Campaign and Listing On German Stock Exchange= s

MURRAY, Utah--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov.= 27, 2001--Wasatch Pharmaceutical Inc. (OTCBB:WSCH - news) CEO Gary Heesch announced today a marketing camp= aign directed to physicians. A direct link has been established on a physi= cian recruiting Web site making available therapies for the treatment of c= ystic acne, acne, folliculitis, and skin rejuvenation. Physicians will fin= d the benefits of these treatment therapies by logging on to the "= X Acne" link at physicianssearc= h.com. This physician search Web site typically receives over 2= 00,000 hits per month. Mr. Heesch reminded, "Our treatment therap= y products are also available via the AISC Online Store at restoremyskin.com.'"

These skin treatment products come in kit form providing a = 90-day supply to patients for the full treatment program. Included in the = kit is an instructional video on the treatment therapy allowing the patien= t to use these products in their home. The therapies, when used as instruc= ted, achieve a success rate of eradication in excess of 90% with no sid= e effects of any consequence. Previously, these therapies and associat= ed products were only available through the two prototype clinics in Utah.= The availability of these products will open the way for family practitio= ners, pediatricians, internists and other primary care physicians to retai= n their patients under their care during the treatment of these common ski= n disorders. The benefit to insurance providers is the potential to sav= e millions of dollars in reimbursement costs by freeing the physician and = the patient from ongoing treatment.

In the coming year, six additional therapies will be made availabl= e for a broad range of skin disorders that are badly in need of succes= sful therapies.

Gary Heesch also an= nounced the listing of Wasatch Pharmaceutical stock on the Frankfurt an= d Berlin Exchanges in Germany. Active trading on these exchanges will = take place upon the completion of a research report in Germany. Said Mr. H= eesch, "We feel this is a significant event as Wasatch will gain w= ider exposure as a leader in dermatology and will put buying pressure on its stock to reflect the true value of a company t= hat has committed years of research and development of products that allow= people with serious skin disorders to live normal and more productive liv= es."

There may be forward-loo= king statements in this release. Investors are cautioned that such forward= -looking statements involve risks and uncertainties, including, without li= mitation, continued acceptance of the Company's products, increased levels= of competition, new products introduced by competitors, changes in the ra= tes of subscriber acquisition and retention, and other risks detailed from= time to time in the Company's periodic reports filed with the Securities = and Exchange Commission.

Projections, Objectives, and Statistics

 Over a five year period, AISC (WSCH's subsidiary) p= lans to establish 350 clinics in over 100 major population areas.&n= bsp; The company plans to hire over 150 medical doctors for these clinics,= train over 1,000 medical assistants and treat over 2,000,000 patients<= /b>. Also by year five, WSCH plans to have annualized over $525 million= in revenue and over $125 million in EBIT. This does not take into acc= ount income from OTC products which will be substantial.

<= blockquote>

  As of 1991, there were = approximately 14 million chronic acne and eczema patients annually in the = United States, with the highest percentage between 18 to 44 years of = age. The actual number of patients with any type of acne is significa= ntly higher.  Seven billion dollars is spent annually on derma= tological pharmaceutical products for these disorders.

=   In 1994, the teen population reached 25 million. During the next d= ecade, it will grow at nearly twice the rate of
the overall p= opulation
(according to U.S. Census Bureau projections). Acne pat= ients are primarily teenagers, whereas eczema patients range from inf= ants to the elderly.

A Look at the Competition

= Dermatologists are the primary competitors of WSCH's clinics. Dermatologis= ts specialize in the treatment of skin disorders and prescribe medications= to treat the disorder.  However, competing products address the s= ymptoms of acne and eczema, not the cause.

<= font face=3DVerdana size=3D2>The competition's skin care treatments includ= e prescription medications (oral and external use drugs prescribed by derm= atologists and other doctors) and over-the-counter products.
Several common prescription medications include:
= 1) E-Mycin for oral and topical use, 2) Cleocin for oral and topical use, = 3) Tetracycline for oral and topical use, and 4) Accutane for oral use onl= y.

Over-the-counter acne medications include: = ;

1) Clearasil and Oxy creams, 2) generic brand creams, 3) medicat= ed pads, and 4) medicated soaps.

Many of the competit= ion's oral medications have serious side effects.

Costs for competing treatments range from $2.50 for= medicated soaps to $200 for Accutane oral medication prescription.  = Treatments are on-going.  Over time a person can spend an unlimite= d amount of money on such treatments.  An example would be someon= e who spent $1,500 for a 22 week program of Accutane which includes blood = testing.  Another example would be someone who has had acne for many = years and has spent in excess of $34,000.

At this time there is no known competitor who treats t= he causes of these skin disorders and no competitor can claim a success= rate equal to that of Wasatch's treatments.

Final Thoughts on WSCH<= /b>

Wi= th a proven success rate of 90% in a field that affects so many of our liv= es, Wasatch has clearly positioned itself in a market hungry and desper= ate for successful products and treatment.  WSCH has recently exp= anded its marketing presence (as seen in the above press release) and will= continue to aggressively broaden awareness over the near term. The listin= g of WSCH on the German stock exchange is another sign of the compa= ny's credibility and ambitious plans to establish itself as a major glo= bal player in the field of dermatology.

WSCH has = taken on a completely different approach.  By addressing the causes o= f skin disorders rather than the symptoms, WSCH will help to successfully = eliminate skin disease altogether. Given its

1. Successful = 14-year history and plans for expansion
2. Impressive revenue projecti= ons ($525 million+ annualized by year 5 and $125 million in EBIT)
= 3. Virtually unmatched success rate of 90%...

It is also available at http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies/) FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "subscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message. For instance to read more about pcvt, you can try: % man 4 pcvt The manpages of section 4 describe various things about devices and device drivers. Start at intro(4), and you'll hopefully find your way around. Cheers, PS: Note that -newbies is probably not the right place to ask general FreeBSD questions. Subject: FreeBSD Newbies First Aid Kit Date: Fri, 14 Dec 2001 19:10:01 -0800 (PST) From: To: freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG FreeBSD-Newbies First Aid Kit (This is a regular posting to the FreeBSD-Newbies mailing list.
