Ok, some information: 486SX, 4 RAM, 20 Mbtyes partition, using a modem (16450 UART) on com2, interupt 3, com1 for mouse, so PPP. I need the basic binaries, the libraries (very important otherwise I cannot run other programs that I can download from the freebsd/netbsd mirror). Compiler not necessary because I want the distribution to be as small as possible. May I suggest if the compressed tar file is still quite big, you can split them into something like bin.tgz, lib.tgz, system.tgz. By the way, I will boot from dos if possible. Picobsd is crunched, it is a single file with only the necessary binaries. People say it is secure this way. It does not have libraries. I have try to copy everything into a bsd partition, boot it, but I cannot run other binaries like vim or mutt I can download from freebsd mirror. In slackware (linux), I can download a rescue floppy, copy everything into a partition and I have a usable system. Silent, and about as small as a consumer-grade DSL router. On Wyse's page below, they indicate they indicate these run a variety of Windows CE, NTe, XPe, or even Linux: http://www.wyse.com/products/winterm/products.htm I'm guessing the minimal OS is burned into flash, and has enough smarts to get everything it needs off the net. Has anyone done something like this, putting FreeBSD on it? The form factor's good, the noise is great, and price is tolerable if it just works out of the box. Any pointers would be appreciated. Silent, and about as small as a... My understanding is that the standard default OS used on this system is a version of *BSD that Wyse customized and then sat on for years. I also am under the impression that it provides the fastest Citrix thin-client environment (on the same hw). I think it requires about 512K boot image. This is 3rd hand info, I know nothing of the particular BSD ancestry, but would likewise be interested in anything anyone knows about this system. You sure you want something as 'big' as a freebsd install; plenty of embedded stacks which can do this for 'less'. Or, if you like high level languages; check out TINY at www.ibutton.com. But I am getting away on my firewall with an 12Mbyte flash card; and it just about is able to email. No, I really am not looking for TINI:) > But I am getting away on my firewall with an 12Mbyte flash card; and it > just about is able to email. I need to keep two copies of a data file that changes daily and may eventually approach 100 MB in size. I have 256 MB of flash to hold those images plus the OS image. I've got space enough for a small MTA, I'm just wondering which of postfix, qmail, sendmail, PP, smail, smtpd, or something else is the best to use. You can cat somefile | smtpclient -s subject -f from -S smtpserver and it'll use some nearby smtp server to do the dirty work. Does what I need. It would be nice to have a file of smtpservers to try in order, but it does well enough for now:) Thanks, --- David To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-small" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-small Sat Aug 24 19:18:28 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-small@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0A52B37B401;
