I had to put the breaks on my ftp server a bit when it sucked up the whole T1 today :P well, I discovered that the problem might be with the actual source avi anyway. the farther into it you get, the more out of sync the sound gets. oh well. You never patched any working -STABLE installation? In August of 1999, I built a DSL router with a 100MHz Pentium and FreeBSD 3.2-R. It was locked down as tight as it got, with the only access via serial terminal. After two years, the disk failed, quite literally grinding to a halt. The disk was replaced, the RAM upgraded to 64MB, and 4.3-R installed with the same configuration. To date, there has been only one bug affecting the machine (lsrr/ssrr flags). It's still doing its job just as well as it did 4 years ago, quietly ignored. A router is situation where it's easy to sacrifice functionality to gain security and reliability. But 4 years of reliable service is no minor achievement on late-90s PC hardware. To date, I don't know if your interested, but if you check ebay and other sources there are adaptors that fit compact flash cards on the IDE bus. Compact flash cards / pcmcia is basically IDE to begin with. They work well. Unfortunately one of my biggest projects using them is causing me much grief. I'm trying to get gphoto2 to run on FreeBSD, but it doesn't seem to work (the rc3 version that supports ptp digital cameras via USB). It works fine in Linux. I'm using 5.0 so I'm going to drop back to 4.8 and retest. Once it is done and working in FreeBSD I hope to try to scale it so it all fits on a 64mb compact flash card. Just don't write log files or anything to the flash, as it can wear out pretty quickly if it is constantly rewritten. We paid $200 for 22 3.5" floppy bay compact flash to IDE adaptors. Using most of them for point of sale applications where the machines were booting from floppy, but are now booting from a 4mb flash card. I will be demoing a linux system using a 256mb one to play 200mb worth of mpeg1 on an optibase card soon (No optibase videoplex drivers for freebsd :-( ). The freebsd flash based systems will be digital camera controllers. They are SBC pentium 150s. -- Ethan From owner-freebsd-advocacy@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Sep 7 07:43:10 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C6CA816A4BF for ; Sun, 7 Sep 2003 07:43:10 -0700 (PDT) Received: from razor.kraksystem.pl (razor.kraksystem.pl [217.97.202.40]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AFF0743FFB for ; Sun, 7 Sep 2003 07:43:09 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from ftyczka@ftyczka.org) Received: from h1-13.krak ([192.168.1.13] helo=ftyczka.org) by razor.kraksystem.pl with esmtp (Exim 3.36 #1) id 19w0ky-0005eX-00 for freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org; Sun, 07 Sep 2003 16:43:12 +0200 Message-ID: <3F5B43F8.30603@ftyczka.org> Date: Sun, 07 Sep 2003 16:43:04 +0200 From: ftyczka User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; pl-PL; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624 X-Accept-Language: pl, en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org References: <20030906132557.A26925@knight.ixsystems.net> In-Reply-To: <20030906132557.A26925@knight.ixsystems.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: Re: FreeBSD v Linux on TechTV - stream X-BeenThere: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Evangelism List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 07 Sep 2003 14:43:10 -0000 I have mirrored the avi in question on: http://149.156.144.85/~jps/freebsd_vs_linux_shootout-techtv-20030902.avi I will remove it in about one week's time. And guys, your smiles near 00:42:30 were also nice, when that gentleman was talking about that wonderful RedHat security system ;) Anyway, that was a good point, do FreeBSD ports have something like audit-packages from NetBSD's pkgsrc? :) I suppose, that showing how easy it is to use ports to compile new software (like, say, xmms 1.2.8, which was released few days ago, AFAIK) could really knock Linux out. Other nice thing to do would be to ask both teams to compile PHP with some non-standard options. This could be interesting even for general audience - I think, that people, who use Linux, may often have problems with their nicely packed RPM files (and they think compiling the sources is too hard for them). I've already started bugging them about a more technical shootout or a step by step FreeBSD installation how to segment. like a getting started with FreeBSD broken up during multiple segments over a week or 2. -matt From owner-freebsd-advocacy@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Sep 7 20:58:54 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 19CAD16A4BF for ; Sun, 7 Sep 2003 20:58:54 -0700 (PDT) Received: from pr93.lublin.sdi.tpnet.pl (pr93.lublin.sdi.tpnet.pl [217.97.36.93]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 7959943FBD for ; Sun, 7 Sep 2003 20:58:52 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from michal@pasternak.w.lub.pl) Received: (qmail 13852 invoked by uid 1000); 8 Sep 2003 03:56:50 -0000 Date: Mon, 8 Sep 2003 05:56:50 +0200 From: Michal Pasternak To: Matt Olander Message-ID: <20030908035650.GA13775@pasternak.w.lub.pl> Mail-Followup-To: Matt Olander , freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org References: <20030906132557.A26925@knight.ixsystems.net> <20030908025530.GA13167@pasternak.w.lub.pl> <20030907204325.A33980@knight.ixsystems.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-2 Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20030907204325.A33980@knight.ixsystems.net> cc: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org Subject: Re: FreeBSD v Linux on TechTV - stream X-BeenThere: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: Michal Pasternak List-Id: FreeBSD Evangelism List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 08 Sep 2003 03:58:54 -0000 Matt Olander [Sun, Sep 07, 2003 at 08:43:25PM -0700]: > > And guys, your smiles near 00:42:30 were also nice, when that gentleman was > > talking about that wonderful RedHat security system ;) Anyway, that was a > > good point, do FreeBSD ports have something like audit-packages from > > NetBSD's pkgsrc? :) > > we tried to keep it civil ;) > doesn't portupgrade have pkgdb -F or something? or maybe a pkg_info -g. pkgsrc's audit-packages gets a database with known vulnerabilities from the web, just to let you know, that the package "X" will allow other users to root your box, even if the checksums are all okay. Additionally, they contain some extraneous stuff with miscellaneous people promoting various products and telling bad jokes :).
