To boot from network you need to setup some services. A NFS server to hold the / filesystem. A bootp which sents several parameters such as bootfiles, IP, ... A TFTP server to hold netboot. This is an example of what you need to configure the isc dhcpd server: shared-network keller { option domain-name "cicely.de"; option domain-name-servers 10.1.1.22, 10.1.1.8; allow bootp; default-lease-time 14400; max-lease-time 86400; server-name "cicely6.cicely.de"; get-lease-hostnames true; authoritative; option ntp-servers 10.1.6.9; subnet 10.1.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { range dynamic-bootp 10.1.1.128 10.1.1.254; option domain-name-servers 10.1.1.22, 10.1.1.8; option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0; option broadcast-address 10.1.1.255; option routers 10.1.1.8; } group { host cicely10 { hardware ethernet 00:00:92:94:0f:91; fixed-address 10.1.1.12; filename "netboot"; next-server 10.1.1.11; option root-path "10.1.1.11:/var/d7/testroot/"; } } } option root-path defines the nfsserver with the / filesystem. The etc/fstab in this filessystem should point to nfs. filename and next-server point to the TFTP server holding the netboot image (from /boot/netboot). The kernel is on the NFS server just as it would be on a normal UFS base / filesystem. -- B.Walter COSMO-Project http://www.cosmo-project.de ticso@cicely.de Usergroup info@cosmo-project.de To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Tue Jan 7 5:52:31 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AB9AC37B401 for ; Tue, 7 Jan 2003 05:52:29 -0800 (PST) Received: from qescan1.qgraph.com (QESCAN1.qgraph.com [206.158.124.7]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 05DD243ED1 for ; Tue, 7 Jan 2003 05:52:29 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from Aaron.Schroeder@qg.com) Received: by sxsmtp1.qgraph.com with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2656.59) id ; Tue, 7 Jan 2003 07:52:21 -0600 Message-ID: <025596A38A894B45AFE62346A6BF47464E34D9@waexch1.qgraph.com> From: "Schroeder, Aaron" To: "'freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org'" Subject: 5305 kernel compile issues with 5.0RC2 Date: Tue, 7 Jan 2003 07:52:18 -0600 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2656.59) Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Sender: owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hello all, I have been trying to get a kernel to compile on a Digital 5305 running a serial console for a few days now. It sounds like your config file has an error, and you've got device atkbd without also having device atkbdc BTW, attempting to remove the keyboard controller for a serial machine is a silly microptimization. You'll save a few K of kernel memory, at the cost of totally screwing yourself if you ever need to boot the machine with a graphics head (like if your terminal server goes bad). You need not do anything special to use a serial console. Just make sure /etc/ttys has an entry for ttyd0 enabled, and set the SRM console env to serial. I've learned that it's required to remove them. It is to force booting the machine with serial. I already got into this by hosters to plug keyboard and monitor to a machine for maintenance - damn - hosters should know better. When the machine finally crashes you really hate them, because you have been outlocked. Better remove the VGA card completely so they will always have to ask before even trying stupid things. In case the terminalserver goes bad you can still attach a notebook and later reconnected the serial to the terminal server. For emergency remote scenarious it also has been proved to connect a mobile phone by a helping hand. -- B.Walter COSMO-Project http://www.cosmo-project.de ticso@cicely.de Usergroup info@cosmo-project.de To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Tue Jan 7 7:31:10 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 06CCB37B401 for ; Tue, 7 Jan 2003 07:31:09 -0800 (PST) Received: from duke.cs.duke.edu (duke.cs.duke.edu [152.3.140.1]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5EF8543ED4 for ; Tue, 7 Jan 2003 07:31:08 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gallatin@cs.duke.edu) Received: from grasshopper.cs.duke.edu (grasshopper.cs.duke.edu [152.3.145.30]) by duke.cs.duke.edu (8.12.6/8.12.6) with ESMTP id h07FUwro009348 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=EDH-RSA-DES-CBC3-SHA bits=168 verify=NO); Tue, 7 Jan 2003 10:30:58 -0500 (EST) Received: (from gallatin@localhost) by grasshopper.cs.duke.edu (8.11.6/8.9.1) id h07FUrx59585; Tue, 7 Jan 2003 10:30:53 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from gallatin@cs.duke.edu) From: Andrew Gallatin MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-ID: <15898.62125.546133.489680@grasshopper.cs.duke.edu> Date: Tue, 7 Jan 2003 10:30:53 -0500 (EST) To: ticso@cicely.de Cc: "Schroeder, Aaron" , "'freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org'" Subject: Re: 5305 kernel compile issues with 5.0RC2 In-Reply-To: <20030107152408.GD28476@cicely8.cicely.de> References: <025596A38A894B45AFE62346A6BF47464E34D9@waexch1.qgraph.com> <15898.58016.810412.610032@grasshopper.cs.duke.edu> <20030107152408.GD28476@cicely8.cicely.de> X-Mailer: VM 6.75 under 21.1 (patch 12) "Channel Islands" XEmacs Lucid Sender: owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Bernd Walter writes: > On Tue, Jan 07, 2003 at 09:22:24AM -0500, Andrew Gallatin wrote: > > BTW, attempting to remove the keyboard controller for a serial machine > > is a silly microptimization. Not a bug, but non thinking persons. I just don't want anyone to ever boot anything else than serial. Just make it absolutely impossible to avoid accidents. It's a "don't even think about graphics" configuration for servers. And believe me - in some situations that's a major optimization from the maintenance standpoint. I don't get your point why I would ever need a graphical console on a machine which is intended to run on serial. -- B.Walter COSMO-Project http://www.cosmo-project.de ticso@cicely.de Usergroup info@cosmo-project.de To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Tue Jan 7 7:52:43 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7D02237B401 for ; Tue, 7 Jan 2003 07:52:41 -0800 (PST) Received: from qescan3.qgraph.com (QESCAN3.qgraph.com [206.158.124.15]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D9B8943EA9 for ; Tue, 7 Jan 2003 07:52:40 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from Aaron.Schroeder@qg.com) Received: by sxsmtp3.qgraph.com with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2656.59) id ; Tue, 7 Jan 2003 09:52:33 -0600 Message-ID: <025596A38A894B45AFE62346A6BF47464E34EB@waexch1.qgraph.com> From: "Schroeder, Aaron" To: 'Andrew Gallatin' Cc: "'freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org'" Subject: RE: 5305 kernel compile issues with 5.0RC2 Date: Tue, 7 Jan 2003 09:52:32 -0600 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2656.59) Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Sender: owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I added 'device atkbdc' to my kernel file since it was never in there to begin with, and I am now compiling the kernel again, I hope this works. I'm Johnny Brasseur , from france (near Paris)= =2E (i'm french so forgive me if it's hard for me to be understood). I'm quite new to bsd and alpha and i 'was wondering if i can ask this kin= d of=20 questions on this list... (i'm used to gnu/linux and M$). I have at home a somewhat old 21064 workstation dec named alphaworkstation 255/300 wich posseses 1Gb of HardDrive SCSI2. I lately installed BSD to check if it could make my day. I knew bsd is the right choice for my pupose when i installed it on this=20 computer (it seemed it was made for it). Actually, my goal is to use this little workstation as a firewall for a l= ocal=20 little network using ADSL and maybe as a web server or file server for=20 personnal purpose (ex: having a file repository i could use anywhere from= ,=20 exchanging data with others with the rights i could define...). The pb is i don't quite know what kind of hardware (modem) i have to use=20 neither how to make it work (i'm not so good at networking configs). So my questions are: - is there an existing adsl modem working on alpha/bsd. - how to make it work to share the connection between several PCs on=20 bsd/linux/windows. If any of you know where i can find docs on that purpose it can be useful= l. Any help appreciated. Johnny. I have $ bills here ;-) But this is with 99% certainty a CPU card for a XLT system. 21164 EV5 CPU. I used to have 2 of these cards. This is a Alpha machine that was produced by DEC's PC division, only had/has the NT console firmware (no SRM therefore) for use with WindowsNT/alpha. Useless for *BSD, I think Linux might run on them. Yeah, had all that - read the manpage and the handbook, but I need to find the kernel that I built so I can move it to the NFS-mounted root directory. Also, is the _WIRED_TO statement needed? It fits midway between the `old' and `new' boot styles and needs a patch to netboot make it work: The SRM is broken enough to need the MAC address explicitly included in netbbinfo, but call to prom_read() in prom_get() _does_ need to specify the receiving structure size (ie the broken_firmware test is not needed). There's an open PR on this but I don't have the number handy. If you can't recompile netboot yourself, I can send you a binary with instructions for patching it with your MAC address. This message is sent from a FreeBSD/alpha host through an ethernet ADSL modem. So it indeed works. The tricky part was to get an ethernet modem, not a USB-only one. The vendor got a bit confused when I told him that although the machine was not a PC, it was not a Mac either; but he got it right when I told him explicitely "my machine does not support USB". Machine is an AXPpci33 "Noname" board (166 MHz ev4), with 32 MB of RAM, and it works great as far as networking is concerned. ADSL link uses PPPoE, so I run pppd (userland -- and it implements NAT and simple packet filtering), and I have enough CPU and RAM left to host my mail server and primary DNS. --Thomas Pornin To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Wed Jan 8 0:40: 4 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CF38937B401 for ; Wed, 8 Jan 2003 00:40:03 -0800 (PST) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6FF2943EDC for ; Wed, 8 Jan 2003 00:40:03 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.6/8.12.6) with ESMTP id h088e3NS045316 for ; Wed, 8 Jan 2003 00:40:03 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.6/8.12.6/Submit) id h088e29h045315; Wed, 8 Jan 2003 00:40:02 -0800 (PST) Date: Wed, 8 Jan 2003 00:40:02 -0800 (PST) Message-Id: <200301080840.h088e29h045315@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.org Cc: From: Volker Stolz Subject: Re: alpha/46831: vr NIC crashes machine on ifconfig (maybe miibus) Reply-To: Volker Stolz Sender: owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org The following reply was made to PR alpha/46831; it has been noted by GNATS. Well, Terry Lambert provided all the necessary info back on 4 Jan, but I've attached an 'official' patch which will fix it. Only tested on i386, but there's nothing platform specific in this one. (kde-freebsd team: All it does is disable --enable-final for all platforms) > Kris > > P.S. kdemultimedia is still broken..you're fast running out of time > to fix this. Looks like something for alpha@ to resolve to me, but not having an alpha here I can't check further. However, if someone on alpha@ can tell us (kde@) if there is anything we can do to fix this from our end, of course we will try and do so. If it cannot be fixed for release, we can mark kdemultimedia3 as broken for Alpha, and ship a modified x11/kde3/Makefile which removes kdemultimedia3 as a RUN_DEPENDS for alpha. That way the rest of KDE can be shipped. Kris, please let me know if you want me to pre-emptively prepare a patch for that, as I won't do it without you asking. The build-time speedup from final is too significant. You're going to have to make the patch platform specific for it to go in; you could put this in now, but I'll back it out when 3.1 release gets committed. -- AlanE (Alan Eldridge) Unix/C(++) IT Pro for 20 yrs, likes fixing weird distributed systems bugs. Sorry, but that's why I asked for no KDE upgrades (among other things) during the ports semi-freeze. What's the official ".if" for "all platforms but those owned by i386 weenies"? It might need to take the PPC folks into account, too... I'm not sure whether they're 32 bit or 64 bit these days. Is there maybe a "64 bit platform" test that can be used, or, better, a "non-32 bit platform" test, since this will bit us on the ass again, when 128 bit platforms start showing up in 5-6 years? -- Terry To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message
