I installed gcc 3.2.3 (gcc 2.95.3 got nowhere) and with that firebird compiled more or less cleanly (i had to switch the final step for various .so's to use gcc32 instead of g++32 because of some relocation errors with libstdc++'s __terminate) but then when i run firebird i get 'Illegal instruction'. I tried to rebuild with -DWITH_DEBUG as per the advice given for CURRENT, but i didn't have enough disk space to spare. Before i scrounge up another drive, has anyone tried this yet? If it's a lost cause, or if anyone knows what options to use to get it working, i'd love to hear it... Barring any specific advice, my next attempts at this point look like: - install another drive and compile firebird with -DWITH_DEBUG - install the latest binutils compiled with gcc3 in case the newest gnu toys only play with each other - reinstall gcc3 (i noticed some -O2's while it was compiling...maybe those aren't an issue anymore like with gcc2.95? anyone know?) - track down what the __terminate thing is about if it doesn't go away from any of the above steps Thanks for any clues, Rich Bud From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Oct 6 11:01:23 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C888E16A4B3 for ; Mon, 6 Oct 2003 11:01:23 -0700 (PDT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 43E9943FA3 for ; Mon, 6 Oct 2003 11:01:23 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (peter@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id h96I1MFY060585 for ; Mon, 6 Oct 2003 11:01:22 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: (from peter@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.9/8.12.9/Submit) id h96I1McL060579 for freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org; Mon, 6 Oct 2003 11:01:22 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Date: Mon, 6 Oct 2003 11:01:22 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <200310061801.h96I1McL060579@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: peter set sender to owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.org Subject: Current problem reports assigned to you X-BeenThere: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Alpha List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 06 Oct 2003 18:01:23 -0000 Current FreeBSD problem reports Critical problems Serious problems S Submitted Tracker Resp. I also tried XFree86-3.3.6 and in this case it works (but only in 8bit color depth and I also see some strange color problems). The card is ok since it works well on a x86 machine. Is anyone using a Matrox Millenium II on a PC 164 board? Is there anything special with this card or with configuring X in general on alpha? Any other hints? I have a DS-10 and a = AS800 running without any problems the 4.9-RC version, but the ES-40 is a = little different. This box has 4 x 500 Mhz CPU=B4s, 4 x Qlogic SCSI boards, 1 x DAC960 = Mylex card sold by Compaq with 2.73 firmware, 2 x DE-500 ethernet cards, a = Elsa Gloria Sinergy v=EDdeo card, 5Gb of RAM memory and a disk shelf with 6 x = 9Gb SCSI disks. The mylex is configured with one hot spare disk and 5 disks using = RAID-5. I can boot the 5.1 Release without any problem, it recognizes the array, = says it=B4s online with 32 Gb of capacity, but when I start the installation = and go to label the disk, there is no disk to label and create partitions. With the same box, I installed Red Hat 7.2 without any problem but I = want FreeBSD. There is some issue with firmware versions on the ES-40? I upgraded to = SRM 6.15-x and to AlphaBIOS ??? ( I don=B4t remember now ) but it was the = latest bios on Compaq site for ES-40. There is anything I can do??? Another thing, I tried to boot 4.9-RC1 = also but it panics. It says that 4.8 supports ES-40 but this is not true for = me. Thanks all... Alessandro. The problem IS that you have installed Linux previously. You need to clean the first few megabytes of disk space (one or two to be sure). Things that have been written by Linux confuse the disklabel editor of FreeBSD. I don't remember exactly how I did this, but it has been discussed on this list some time ago. This question has been asked before by others, but never with any answers, so I thought I'd try again :) I'm having trouble getting XFree4 running on my UP2000(264dp). It seems to switch to vt9 and then it sits and takes 100% cpu until I ssh in and kill X. Afterward, I can switch back to whatever virtual terminal I want. It appears to die after the pci bus scan. XFree86 -scanpci works and exits properly. I've tried several cards (S3 Virge and matrox) in several pci slots. It behaves the same on all versions of X 4.1.0 to 4.3.0, and all versions of FreeBSD 4.7 to -CURRENT from a couple nights ago. XFree3.3.6 works however, but lacks lots of nice features Here's my XFree86.0.log: (note, I disabled scanning the 2nd pci bus in the X source because I read on a debian-alpha mailing list that X had trouble scanning the 2nd bus on this board, but it didn't alter the behavior except that the 2nd bus is no longer scanned :) Thanks for any advice you can give. ------------------------------------------------ XFree86 Version 4.3.0 Release Date: 27 February 2003 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.6 Build Operating System: FreeBSD 5.1 alpha [ELF] Build Date: 09 October 2003 Before reporting problems, check http://www.XFree86.Org/ to make sure that you have the latest version.
