Everything works fine except X. I realize that the problem more than likely isn't FreeBSD specific, its probably a problem with XFree but I thought you guys may be able to give me some advice. When I try to run "xf86cfg" to configure my xserver, it just hangs and takes 99% of the CPU. Ive also tried manually creating config files just to see if I got the same behavior, and I did. I have tried with a few different vid cards, the Cirrus Logic that was originally in this machine, an ATI Mach64, and an S3 Trio. It always hangs at the same spot in the log and takes 99% of the CPU. Here's an excerpt from the log file. Thanks in advance for any help, i'm thinking I may need to just wait for X 4.4, but i'm hoping someone out there has had better luck than I have. ****Start Log Excerpt*** (II) Loading font Bitmap (II) LoadModule: "pcidata" (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libpcidata.a (II) Module pcidata: vendor="The XFree86 Project" compiled for 4.3.0, module version = 1.0.0 ABI class: XFree86 Video Driver, version 0.6 (II) PCI: PCI scan (all values are in hex) (II) PCI: 00:03:0: chip 1011,0019 card 0000,0000 rev 30 class 02,00,00 hdr 00 (II) PCI: 00:07:0: chip 1080,c693 card 0000,0000 rev 00 class 06,01,00 hdr 80 (II) PCI: 00:07:1: chip 1080,c693 card 0000,0000 rev 00 class 01,01,80 hdr 80 (II) PCI: 00:07:2: chip 1080,c693 card 0000,0000 rev 00 class 01,01,00 hdr 80 (II) PCI: 00:07:3: chip 1080,c693 card 0000,0000 rev 00 class 0c,03,10 hdr 80 (II) PCI: 00:14:0: chip 1011,0024 card 0000,0000 rev 02 class 06,04,00 hdr 01 (II) PCI: 01:04:0: chip 1077,1020 card 0000,0000 rev 05 class 01,00,00 hdr 00 (II) PCI: 01:08:0: chip 5333,8811 card 0000,0000 rev 00 class 03,00,00 hdr 00 (II) PCI: 01:0a:0: chip 1000,000f card 0000,0000 rev 04 class 01,00,00 hdr 00 (II) PCI: End of PCI scan (II) PCI-to-ISA bridge: (II) Bus -1: bridge is at (0:7:0), (0,-1,-1), BCTRL: 0x0008 (VGA_EN is set) (II) PCI-to-PCI bridge: (II) Bus 1: bridge is at (0:20:0), (0,1,0), BCTRL: 0x0008 (VGA_EN is set) (II) Bus 1 I/O range: [0] -1 0 0x00008000 - 0x00008fff (0x1000) IX[B] (II) Bus 1 non-prefetchable memory range: [0] -1 0 0x80000000 - 0x808fffff (0x900000) MX[B] (II) Host-to-PCI bridge: (II) Bus 0: bridge is at (0:0:0), (-1,0,0), BCTRL: 0x0008 (VGA_EN is set) (II) Bus 0 I/O range: [0] -1 0 0x00000000 - 0xffffffff (0x100000000) IX[B] (II) Bus 0 non-prefetchable memory range: [0] -1 0 0x80000000 - 0xffffffff (0x80000000) MX[B] (II) Bus 0 prefetchable memory range: [0] -1 0 0x80000000 - 0xffffffff (0x80000000) MX[B] ***End of Log Excerpt*** --Stephen Agar -- ---------------------------------------------------- Stephen Agar, Systems Administrator II University of Southern Mississippi iTech, Stennis Space Center e-mail: stephen.agar@usm.edu phone: 228.688.1994 From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Dec 9 18:30:11 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 102AF16A4CE for ; Tue, 9 Dec 2003 18:30:11 -0800 (PST) Received: from mail.inka.de (quechua.inka.de [193.197.184.2]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5FB8143D13 for ; Tue, 9 Dec 2003 18:30:09 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from mailnull@mips.inka.de) Received: from kemoauc.mips.inka.de (uucp@) by mail.inka.de with gbsmtp id 1ATu75-0003jS-01; Wed, 10 Dec 2003 03:30:07 +0100 Received: from kemoauc.mips.inka.de (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by kemoauc.mips.inka.de (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id hBA20lG5004426 for ; Wed, 10 Dec 2003 03:00:47 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from mailnull@kemoauc.mips.inka.de) Received: (from mailnull@localhost) by kemoauc.mips.inka.de (8.12.10/8.12.10/Submit) id hBA20kuM004425 for freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org; Wed, 10 Dec 2003 03:00:46 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from mailnull) From: naddy@mips.inka.de (Christian Weisgerber) Date: Wed, 10 Dec 2003 02:00:45 +0000 (UTC) Message-ID: Originator: naddy@mips.inka.de (Christian Weisgerber) To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Subject: Modern PCI graphic cards? I'm finally moving from CRT to a flat panel display, and the old 4MB Matrox Mystique in my PC164 doesn't cut it for 1280x1024 in true color. Also, DVI would be nice. Obviously I'm not looking for 3D acceleration performance, any low end card is likely to be total overkill already. I picked up a "Hercules 3D Prophet 9000" (ATI Radeon 9000) but my PC164 wouldn't even pass its initial hardware test with that card inserted. An old Pentium-I PC wouldn't recognize the card either, so maybe it's just a dud, or maybe my machines are just too ancient. Anyway, while I'm returning the card, any recommendations? -- Christian "naddy" Weisgerber naddy@mips.inka.de From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Dec 9 18:44:26 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 961E916A4CE for ; Tue, 9 Dec 2003 18:44:26 -0800 (PST) Received: from just.puresimplicity.net (just.puresimplicity.net [140.177.207.10]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0D8A243D2B for ; Tue, 9 Dec 2003 18:44:25 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from hemi@puresimplicity.net) Received: from just.puresimplicity.net (localhost.puresimplicity.net [127.0.0.1])hBA2iOFm058444 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO); Tue, 9 Dec 2003 20:44:24 -0600 (CST) (envelope-from hemi@just.puresimplicity.net) Received: (from hemi@localhost) by just.puresimplicity.net (8.12.9p2/8.12.9/Submit) id hBA2iOuK058443; Tue, 9 Dec 2003 20:44:24 -0600 (CST) (envelope-from hemi) Date: Tue, 9 Dec 2003 20:44:24 -0600 From: Josh Tolbert To: Christian Weisgerber Message-ID: <20031210024424.GA58422@just.puresimplicity.net> References: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i cc: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Modern PCI graphic cards? It does support partitioning (disklabel style), but it doesn't have to use fdisk style slices. SRM doesn't care about partition style at all - it takes the bootrecord and that's it. > My experience with an USB Memory stick is, that the stick gets detected > an an /dev/da[something] is created in /dev, but the /dev/da[something]s1 > for the fat filesystem on this stick is'nt created, so I can't mount the fs. > fdisk does'nt exist on this platform. I have been benchmarking both servers using various benchmarks under ports/benchmarks. (I did notice that Bytebench doesn't finish on the Alph= a.) What is your general thoughts on which server will serve in this capacity= in the long-term? I am curious how you would rate the Alpha against this spe= cific Intel-based system.
