Yeah, it's worth mentioning that the Adaptec command-line RAID utility is not only well-maintained for FreeBSD, there's a .tgz package you can grab from adaptec.com. I've been using an Adaptec 3200S with 150GB under RAID 1 under load, and it screams. Highly recommended. Too bad about 3ware, this is news to me too that it's poorly supported under *BSD. Also, the lack of support for the current firmware on the 7000 series cards makes me hesitant to use those cards with FreeBSD. I agree that the driver is a quality piece of work, but that's not much comfort when you're trying to rebuild a degraded array and the only way to do it is to install another OS. I was not able to test out the hot spare feature, as that would require faking a drive failure on a live system, and I could not think of an elegant way to do that. (Suggestions welcome). I suppose I could just switch off the power to a drive. What I did do was shut the system down, and pull out a member drive, booted immediately, and the array rebuilt itself in the background. However, it will not work because the FreeBSD version will not skip over the bad sector on the source drive. I am not sure if I would want this feature in the first place as I would like to know where my corrupted data is. There is no standard for running a RS232 serial connection over RJ45 connectors like there is for DB-25 and DB-9 connectors. I wish there were, but.... We just make our own cables and ends. Using flat satin cable, putting the RJ45 ends on is trivial, and Comtrol's pin out allows a cross over cable to be built by putting the RJ45 connector on one end of the cable on backwards. (We even have some old RP ISA cards floating around that are still in use) WARNING: driver rp should register devices with make_dev() (dev_t = "#rp/0x10014") I did hear that a new rp driver (nrp?) had been written/committed in -CURRENT sometime late last year, and apparently made it in 5.0-RELEASE, but hadn't been back-ported to -STABLE yet (but patches have been floating around in the archives). I haven't had a chance to test it yet, although one of the things the new driver apparently fixes is you are now able to use more than one PCI card in a box. I hope this is the right place to submit my problem. I have compiled my kernel with device fdc hints WIGWAW.hints in my config file but i don't have a /dev/fd0 device, neither have I /dev/fd0x (x=a...h). I am using ("uname -a") FreeBSD wigwaw 5.0-RELEASE-p6 FreeBSD 5.0-RELEASE-p6 #7: Wed Mar 26 00:02:29 CET 2003 root@wigwaw:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/WIGWAW i386 Here is the output of "dmesg | grep fd" fdc0: cmd 3 failed at out byte 1 of 3 fdc0: cmd 3 failed at out byte 1 of 3 fdc0: cannot reserve I/O port range (6 ports) Is it a hardware problem? Or is there something wrong with my WIGWAW.hints file. Here is a part of it (grep fdc WIGWAW.hints): hint.fdc.0.at="isa" hint.fdc.0.port="0x3F0" hint.fdc.0.irq="6" hint.fdc.0.drq="2" hint.fd.0.at="fdc0" hint.fd.0.drive="0" hint.fd.1.at="fdc0" hint.fd.1.drive="1" It is basically the same as the default from GENERIC.hints. So ... What does this line "isa" mean? Is the irq correct? Thanks for any hint on making my floppy driver work. The right question to ask is: do all the operational modes of the 3Ware card work properly under FreeBSD? At the moment, it appears that the answer is "no". Specifically, the RAID 5 configuration appears to result in data corruption with the current firmware. | but the driver is top notch in terms of speed and reliability In RAID 1/0 configuration, possibly. There have been broken 3ware firmwares in the past that specifically effected RAID5. A quick test of the same hardware under LINUX or win2k would confirm if this is another firmware issue or driver specific. = Another common issue across all platforms (i.e. firmware issue) was changing the disk stripe to anything other than the default 64k on RAID0 or 10. This too would break things on all operating systems. ---Mike Mike Tancsa (mike@sentex.net)=09 http://www.sentex.net/mike From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Mar 29 11:31:16 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4521B37B401 for ; Sat, 29 Mar 2003 11:31:16 -0800 (PST) Received: from metric.it.uab.edu (metric.it.uab.edu [138.26.182.19]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 54AF743F93 for ; Sat, 29 Mar 2003 11:31:15 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from zach@metric.it.uab.edu) Received: (from zach@localhost) by metric.it.uab.edu (8.11.6/8.11.6) id h2TJVEW16358 for freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org; Sat, 29 Mar 2003 13:31:14 -0600 Date: Sat, 29 Mar 2003 13:31:14 -0600 From: Zachariah P Garner To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20030329133114.A16353@neurosoft.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5.1i Subject: USB Wireless Network Adapter X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 29 Mar 2003 19:31:17 -0000 Does anyone know if there are any USB Wireless network adapters that are supported under FreeBSD? (I'm running 5.0) I have read the map pages for wi, but they only list PCMCIA cards. I know that many companies have a PCI version of the pcmcia card. I have heard that you are likely to get better performance out of a USB adapter since you can more easily move it to get a better signal. Are there particular manufacturers that I should purchase from or avoid? If anyone can offer any advice, I would appreciate it. We'd like to use the 3ware 7000-2 in non-RAID JBOD, to get the supposed speed benefit of the 3ware "switch fabric", lower CPU overhead, etc. in high-volume SMTP relays. Will whatever 3ware+FreeBSD somewhat "discutable" 3ware problems show up in JBOD mode or are the problems limited to RAID? Does anybody have experience or URL that says the 3ware 7000-2 @ $100 is sufficiently "better" to justify it over an Promise "Ultra133 TX2" @ $40? (;-} So, the question is still: It this a possible addition to FreeBSD? If not, I'll leave my latest copy on the net. "Matthew N.
