While the card has RAID capabilities, I am only attempting to use a single drive without RAID. The box works well enough with 4.8 & 4.9, though I have not tried to build a multiprocessor kernel. I am completely unable to install 5.1 from floppy or CD boot - the kernel load always fails while probing the PCI bus or bus bridge - at least that is always the last message on the screen when the system hangs. Whether the SIL controller is plugged into the bus or not. Under 4.x versions the bios reports the existence of both the SIL controller & Hitachi 160 GB drive. But the fdisk process completely fails to see it (no driver, I assume) whether or not I disable the SCSI controllers, etc. If the 7890 is enabled I can install normally on either/both of the SCSI drives. 1) Is the SIL 3112A supported by any version (my searches have yielded nothing) 2) Do 4.8 or 4.9 support ANY SATA controller/drives (my searches have yielded nothing unambiguous) 3) Why does 5.1 so dislike this server? I'd highly recommend the 3Ware cards (www.3ware.com) I've used both the 7500 Parallel ATA series and the 8500 SATA series with FreeBSD, and they perform flawlessly. One of the great things about the 3Ware cards is the management software that's available for them - 3dm. This can be installed straight from ports, /usr/ports/sysutils/3dm. The software can also send you event notification emails, such as if a raid array goes offline, etc. > Here are possible candidates: > > Promise FastTrak S150 TX2+, TX4 Having had several Promise raid cards in the past, I'd say keep away from Promise - the 3Ware cards are in the same price range but are far far superior. I believe it's a bug in > the ohci driver but don't know more than that. You may well be right. And either it fixed itself, or I've been `cmp'ing against a mis-labelled ``bad/good'' reference file. What I did in my frustration was to throw hardware around and swap in a UHCI+EHCI controller card I had, also to verify my memory of my EHCI performance. At that point, I saw no difference between the saved `good' image and that downloaded directly from the camera. Other issues with that driver caused me to revert to the OHCI+EHCI controller (also that it has firewire that I need too). Then it worked Just Right, and has never given me problems since, though with relative little use. This suddenly-working-after-trying-different-uhci-controller phenomenon also sounds like what I saw when trying to use libusb to talk to the printer I have, where I had no total success, until I swapped controller cards, then it suddenly started working, and continued after switching back to the ohci card. Don't ask me to understand this. Also, for a USB1 device and an msdos type filesystem, I see what I am led to understand is reasonable transfer rates of more than half the theoretical maximum speed, about which I shall not complain -- certainly beats the `mtools' access to the printer that I had had to use previously. I have vague memories of the uhci card giving transfer rates about ten times slower, but I could be confused with all the hardware juggling going on and trying to keep track of all the differences, expected and unexpected. Others are welcome to comment on these observations. I also may have used different usb-related kernel module sources, as I've been juggling more of those around based on -stable and -current of various vintages. Sheesh, I need to clean up my system -- I thought I was running the code based on -current since the last boot, but it turns out it's September-RELENG_4 ... Now I can't even remember what I was using when I saw the 4k problem, furrfu. thanks, Barry Bouwsma From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Dec 15 13:57:27 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 624F016A4CE for ; Mon, 15 Dec 2003 13:57:27 -0800 (PST) Received: from pit.databus.com (p70-227.acedsl.com [66.114.70.227]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0B4F543D32 for ; Mon, 15 Dec 2003 13:57:26 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from barney@pit.databus.com) Received: from pit.databus.com (localhost.databus.com [127.0.0.1]) by pit.databus.com (8.12.9p2/8.12.9) with ESMTP id hBFLvNot053144; Mon, 15 Dec 2003 16:57:23 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from barney@pit.databus.com) Received: (from barney@localhost) by pit.databus.com (8.12.9p2/8.12.9/Submit) id hBFLvNk4053143; Mon, 15 Dec 2003 16:57:23 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from barney) Date: Mon, 15 Dec 2003 16:57:23 -0500 From: Barney Wolff To: Barry Bouwsma Message-ID: <20031215215723.GA9686@pit.databus.com> References: <200311050441.hA54fhJ54978@NOSPAM.spam.NOSPAM.spam.NOSPAM.dyndns.dk> <200311210043.hAL0hDu01322@NOSPAM.spam.NOSPAM.spam.NOSPAM.dyndns.dk> <20031121194845.GA87408@pit.databus.com> <200312152131.hBFLVUG06445@NOSPAM.spam.NOSPAM.spam.NOSPAM.dyndns.dk> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <200312152131.hBFLVUG06445@NOSPAM.spam.NOSPAM.spam.NOSPAM.dyndns.dk> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.5.1i X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.37 cc: FreeBSD Hardware Wizards Subject: Re: USB camera compatibility question X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 15 Dec 2003 21:57:27 -0000 On Mon, Dec 15, 2003 at 10:31:30PM +0100, Barry Bouwsma wrote: > > > The "junk at byte 4097" symptom matches what I get with a Sony F707 > > on -current using the OHCI usb controller. I've been fighting this for many weeks. I've got three scenarios: (1) In order to have the 'snd_pcm' be able to see the chips at all, I must include it with the kernel via 'device pcm'. Then we get the following msg on the console every time an app wants to play some sound. Yes every time: >>>> pcm0:virtual:0: play interrupt timeout, channel dead <<<< (2) If I let the boot loader.conf bring in 'snd_pcm' before the kernel starts, it won't see the sound chips at all. (3) The OSS driver does see the chips and it does work. But then I must not do #1 above (when snd_pcm is compiled into the kernel, you cannot kldunload it to use OSS instead). I am tracking 5-Current via CTM, and src & ports are current as of this morning's bucket at the CTM FTP site. I have a bit of logging to show for each scenario: ------- (1) Compiling 'device pcm' into the kernel, we can see the chips get detected, as the dmesg shows: [...] Preloaded elf kernel "/boot/kernel/kernel" at 0xc0b66000. I've had experience with the HighPoint RocketRAID 1520 (SATA) and the Promise TX2 (ATA133). First, in terms of reliability and function, I've not had any problems with either to date. However, I find the transfer rates of both of them to be less than I would expect. I'm not sure what version of FreeBSD you're planning to use, but my understanding that SATA support isn't great in 4.x. Under 4.x the ata driver downgrades the SATA drives on the HighPoint to UDMA33 (33 MB/s) and I see read throughput of approximately 15 MB/s and write throughput of about 25 MB/s (whether I use FreeBSD's ata driver or the one that HighPoint provides). Under 5.1, the drives are run at UDMA133 (133 MB/s). (I think I read somewhere that the HighPoint controller is essentially an ATA133 controller with a bridge that translates the SATA150 to ATA133, so it doesn't actually run at 150 MB/s.) However, my throughput is actually worse than under 4.x. I see 15MB/s both reading and writing. This is way below what it should be. I've been in contact with the person who maintains FreeBSD's ata driver, and it appears that although his driver follows the specs that are available to him, the controller/drives don't behave as advertised. If you use atacontrol to drop the drives to UDMA100, the throughput improves significantly. In my case, it jumped to 53 MB/s reading and 43 MB/s writing. This is still somewhat slower than what I see with a single ATA133 drive on a plain ATA controller, but it's in the same ballpark. I realize the Promise TX2 isn't a SATA controller (its an ATA133 controller), but my experiences may still be helpful. With this controller, under 4.9-RELEASE, I see 40 MB/s reading and 20 MB/s writing, which is far lower than a single ATA133 drive. I'm not sure why it is low, but it appears that there is a bottleneck of a total of 40MB/s between the controller and its drives. This would explain why the write throughput is exactly half the read throughput (each piece of data can be read from a single drive, but must be written simultaneously to both drives). I'd be interested to hear from other people regarding ATA RAID 1 implementations in general. I've read that RAID 1 gives the ability to achieve double the read transfer rates of a single drive because the reads can be distributed across the mirrored pair. However, the data transfer rates on the controllers I've mentioned above suggest they don't take advantage of this (and tests with iostat during a large transfer suggest that all the data is indeed being read from a single drive). Has anyone had experience with an ATA (or SATA) RAID 1 controller that seems to take advantage of this possibility of RAID 1? Perhaps the manufacturers assume that anyone concerned with throughput will be using a different RAID level, so don't bother to go to the expense... Hope this info is helpful. Anyway, I shelled out for the Escalade controller which should be well-supported by any BSD and of course Linux, and also quite fast (real hardware RAID, presumably not just a BIOS to boot a software RAID volume like the other controllers). I still doubt this array will have the speed of my 10K RPM SCSI mirror, but should be close enough. It's a shame for this price it doesn't have cache. Despite there apparently being ICH5 SATA support in both -STABLE and -CURRENT as of last summer, I cannot get any version of FreeBSD to install onto these drives while the ICH5 controller is configured for SATA RAID. In the motherboard BIOS there are several configuration settings for the SATA mode. First, they can be configured as RAID (either level 0 or 1), which is how I'd like to run. Next, there are two different "legacy" modes (one, where SATA takes the place of the PATA drives, and another where PATA and SATA both run side by side). If I run in one of the legacy modes I am able to boot, and 5.2-RC1 detects and is able to install to the disks. However, RAID cannot be enabled in legacy mode so it is not overly useful. If I enable RAID (and it doesn't matter whether the 2 disks are configured as striped, mirrored, or with no RAID volumes defined at all) then the installer hangs at the boot loader on the 5.2-RC1 install CD. The error is: ----- BTX loader 1.00 BTX version is 1.01 Console internal video/keyboard BIOS CD is cd0 BIOS drive A: is disk0 int=0000000d err=00000000 efl=00030046 eip=00009066 eax=000000b8 ebx=000028280 ecx=0000000 edx=000008ee esi=00009701 edi=00001f98 ebp=00000000 esp=00001800 cs=0000 ds=0000 fs=0000 gs=0000 ss=0000 es:eip 0f 01 1e d6 96 0f 01 16-d0 96 0f 20 c0 66 83 c8 01 0f 22 c0 ea 7f 90 08-00 31 c9 b1 10 8e d1 b1 ss:esp=0a 69 6e 74 3d 30 30 30-30 30 30 30 64 20 20 65 72 72 3d 30 30 30 30 30 - 30 30 30 20 20 65 66 6c BTX halted ----- The numbers appear identical through reboots. I get the same effect if I boot from a -CURRENT snapshot from 1217 as well. If I boot from a 4-STABLE snapshot from 1202 then I don't get any errors on bootup, but once I get to sysinstall it is not able to detect any disks to install to. I'm a bit stumped, as I've seen newsgroup/mailing list posts saying that ICH5 is supported, I can see that code is supposedly there to support it if I look in CVS, and I've seen comments from Soren regarding it's support, and it kind of works if I use legacy mode. I've submitted a PR (still waiting for the email with the PR#), but I'm also posting it here in case anyone using them has managed to get them to work. Is there any way for me to check which one is compatible with > freebsd (the hardware list at freebsd.org feels a little sparse) ? I'd highly recommend the 3Ware IDE Raid cards (www.3ware.com). We use them (Both the 7506 and 8506 series) with our FreeBSD Servers. The drivers are rock solid and the management software is superb (/usr/ports/sysutils/3dm). For example, it can be set to email you any events that the card picks up, such as a disk failing. They do 2 port up to 12 port cards, both Parallel ATA and Serial ATA. They are slightly difficult to get hold of (At least in the UK), but its well worth making the extra effort to get hold of a card. Having used Promise cards before, I have to say the 3Ware cards are far superior. I like the quality and range of these cards, and would like to roll my own access points, but every piece of documentation I've come across up to this point says it's not currently implemented in the 4.X drivers. Any word on whether this might make it into 5.2? BTW, what is the problem with getting these cards to work in infrastructure mode, as opposed to ad-hoc? See the ath manpage for more information and/or ask around on -current for people's experiences with those cards.
