We cannot get the USB stack to work on the BigSur yet. It appears that the moment we reset the 460GX, we reset the USB host controller and it's dead from that moment on. Resetting the machine may or may not fix this the first time around. I've had to reset the machine twice before an USB keyboard started to work again (in EFI). As such, we don't have support for the UHCI host controller in the kernel by default. Please do not add support without making sure you have a backup kernel that works :-) 2. The installer does not know how to create GPT based partitions yet. If a machine already has a GPT, it's probably a good idea to pre- partition. The installer should be smart enough to detect and use a GPT based FreeBSD partition. Note that the installer still insists on having a disklabel, so the GPT partition type should then be: 516e7cb4-6ecf-11d6-8ff8-00022d09712b Don't worry if I'm not making sense to you :-) 3. On an empty disk, you can use the installer to partition it, but it will be a legacy (ie PC) MBR partition. You have to create an EFI partition by hand and you have to give it a mount point so that the installer will put the loader, kernel and modules on the EFI partition. Failure to do so will result in an unformatted (and thus useless) EFI partition and consequently an unbootable disk. The kernel can start up and prompt installation interface. Because intel tiger 4 use usb keyboard and mouse, therefore I could not use usb keyboard and mouse to continue install system. I examine the system and find a serial console. I do not know if freebsd installation can use serial console to install. If can, how to change to serial console, because in intel tiger 4, the VGA is on motherboard. I want to use serial console to install ia64 system. If someone knows, please give me a reply. Hi,

My name is Levi Lewis and I'm with GlobalPromoter.com,
a search engine optimization firm specializing in guaranteed
first page listings in the major search engines. I would like
to speak with someone from your company regarding possible
partnership opportunities.

GlobalPromoter is an industry leader in the website optimization
and search engine submission business and has partnerships with
search engines including Overture, Inktomi, LookSmart and Findwhat
just to name a few.

We guarantee first page listings in the major search engines on most
of our packages and guarantee those listings within 14 days of
placing your order. If you would like to view some sample before
and after ranking reports of our clients please contact us.

We also offer our partners generous commissions even if they never
use our service.

In addition to our paid services we also offer several FREE and Unique
online tools (link at the bottom of page) that your users would find quite powerful. If you have any
"do-it-yourself marketers" I think they'll be quite impressed with the
analysis and recommendation tools we offer. Here are just a few of
the free tools.

Keyword Suggestion Tool:
The user enters a keyword and receives every variance of that keyword
and the number of times it's been searched on so far this month on the
Overture network of search engines.

Site Readiness Tool:
The user enters a url and keyword phrase and gets a detailed report
with recommendations to improve their ranking on the major search
engines.

Spider Your Competition Tool:
User can enter a url and extract the contents of your competitions
pages.

Plus there are many more. And we would be more than happy to put
the free tools on your site at no charge if we come to an agreement.

Please contact us with any questions and or comments you might
have. We look forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,
Levi Lewis

Start a buildworld for ia64 on some i386 machine like this: cd /usr/src; make buildworld TARGET_ARCH=ia64 Once the buildworld has passed the point of building the cross-tools, you can start building a kernel, like this: cd /usr/src; make buildkernel TARGET_ARCH=ia64 When in doubt as to when you can start the kernel build, wait for the world build to finish (can take 2 hours). > Besides, intel tiger 4 support ehci usb and lsi53c1030 scsi. NetBSD has it and we keep our USB implementation roughly the same, so it shouldn't be too hard to port it over. The SCSI controller is supported by the mpt(4) driver. It works fine. Oops... Forgot to tell you what to do after the kernel build has finished. The best thing to do is to setup netbooting. That way you can continue to build and tweak on the i386 and boot the ia64 box over the network. This requires enabling tftp on the i386 (see inetd.conf) and installing a DHCP server (I use the one in the ports collection). If /tftpboot is where you have the tftp server look for the files, you can put the kernel there like this: cd /usr/src; make installkernel TARGET_ARCH=ia64 DESTDIR=/tftpboot You also need the loader there. The easiest way for now is to just install the whole world build. Once you get a feel for it, you'll know how to minimize space. Install world like: cd /usr/src; make installworld TARGET_ARCH=ia64 DESTDIR=/tftpboot Configure the DHCP server so that the loader is fetched from /tftpboot/boot/loader.efi There are other ways as well, but they all differ in the extend of FreeBSD knowledge one needs to have. New code that tries to use ia64_ptob(Maxmem) for something other than VHPT sizing would be broken. Like machdep.c:164? printf("real memory = %ld (%ld MB)\n", ia64_ptob(Maxmem), ia64_ptob(Maxmem) / 1048576); As for the fact that Maxmem is in bytes and physmem isn't: we define Maxmem to be equal to physmem (machdep.c:598). So they are in fact equal. > And of course, it doesn't hurt to have a > bigger VHPT on large memory machines :) Agreed. However, I'd like us to first get things to work without VHPT (especially SMP) and then focus on getting a good VHPT implementation. I think this way we'll have the best infrastructure. I have it planned after EPC (I'm working on that right now). -- Marcel Moolenaar USPA: A-39004 marcel@xcllnt.net To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-ia64" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-ia64 Thu Feb 13 18:19: 6 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EFD6537B405 for ; Thu, 13 Feb 2003 18:19:05 -0800 (PST) Received: from caduceus.sc.intel.com (fmr04.intel.com [143.183.121.6]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 61C8D43F85 for ; Thu, 13 Feb 2003 18:19:04 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from adsharma@unix-os.sc.intel.com) Received: from petasus.sc.intel.com (petasus.sc.intel.com [10.3.253.4]) by caduceus.sc.intel.com (8.11.6/8.11.6/d: outer.mc,v 1.51 2002/09/23 20:43:23 dmccart Exp $) with ESMTP id h1E2I4f02655; Fri, 14 Feb 2003 02:18:04 GMT Received: from unix-os.sc.intel.com (unix-os.sc.intel.com [143.183.96.244]) by petasus.sc.intel.com (8.11.6/8.11.6/d: inner.mc,v 1.28 2003/01/13 19:44:39 dmccart Exp $) with ESMTP id h1E2I8R01415; Fri, 14 Feb 2003 02:18:08 GMT Received: from unix-os.sc.intel.com.intel.com (adsharma-mobl3.sc.intel.com [143.183.130.51]) by unix-os.sc.intel.com (8.11.6/8.11.2) with ESMTP id h1E2J3r20106; Thu, 13 Feb 2003 18:19:03 -0800 To: Marcel Moolenaar Cc: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: FreeBSD ia64 install problems WAS: install on Dell Precision Work Station 730 References: <03781128C7B74B4DBC27C55859C9D7380B9DDB5D@es06snlnt.sandia.gov> <20030210203522.GA543@athlon.pn.xcllnt.net> From: Arun Sharma Date: 13 Feb 2003 18:19:02 -0800 In-Reply-To: <20030210203522.GA543@athlon.pn.xcllnt.net> Message-ID: Lines: 13 User-Agent: Gnus/5.09 (Gnus v5.9.0) Emacs/21.2 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-freebsd-ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Marcel Moolenaar writes: > 2. Hmmm... good question. AFAICT, we don't prohibit or inhibit based on the tier level. I guess in this case it's just a matter of how the process is designed: we only build i386 because that was the only platform we had when designing the process (probably). I've cc'd doc@ on this. They should be able to give an authoritative answer. To doc: 1. Is the above correct? 2. Is there a way we could get the platform specific man pages included as well? -- Marcel Moolenaar USPA: A-39004 marcel@xcllnt.net To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-ia64" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-ia64 Fri Feb 14 12:24:58 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EFE6D37B401 for ; Fri, 14 Feb 2003 12:24:56 -0800 (PST) Received: from ns1.xcllnt.net (209-128-86-226.bayarea.net [209.128.86.226]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 23D4043FAF for ; Fri, 14 Feb 2003 12:24:56 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from marcel@xcllnt.net) Received: from athlon.pn.xcllnt.net (athlon.pn.xcllnt.net [192.168.4.3]) by ns1.xcllnt.net (8.12.6/8.12.6) with ESMTP id h1EKOt1o059559; Fri, 14 Feb 2003 12:24:55 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from marcel@piii.pn.xcllnt.net) Received: from athlon.pn.xcllnt.net (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by athlon.pn.xcllnt.net (8.12.7/8.12.7) with ESMTP id h1EKOt08000720; Fri, 14 Feb 2003 12:24:55 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from marcel@athlon.pn.xcllnt.net) Received: (from marcel@localhost) by athlon.pn.xcllnt.net (8.12.7/8.12.7/Submit) id h1EKOtXn000719; Fri, 14 Feb 2003 12:24:55 -0800 (PST) Date: Fri, 14 Feb 2003 12:24:55 -0800 From: Marcel Moolenaar To: Barry Wu Cc: freebsd-ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: problem after freebsd ia64 installed on intel tiger 4 Message-ID: <20030214202455.GB568@athlon.pn.xcllnt.net> References: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.3i Sender: owner-freebsd-ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Fri, Feb 14, 2003 at 10:50:50PM +0800, Barry Wu wrote: > Hi, Marcel, Thanks for your help. If there was a GPT on the disk already, then what's going on (likely) is that EFI sees the GPT and ignores the MBR. The FreeBSD installer does not know how to make a GPT partitioning, so it still uses MBR. This can be resolved by creating a GPT partition with the EFI diskpart tool that has the right type (see the mail I sent to Diana -- the one with the UUID in it :-) and that has a matching partition start and size. That should be it. If there wasn't a GPT on the disk, then I have to speculate too much. So, additional info is needed. Of course what really needs to happen is that we teach our installer how to create GPT partitions from the word go. Unfortunately, I'm not in the position to open a jar of programmers and get it done. I can help coerse people to being a committer if they provide good patches; right Peter? :-) -- Marcel Moolenaar USPA: A-39004 marcel@xcllnt.net To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-ia64" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-ia64 Fri Feb 14 17:27:39 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4AFA137B401 for ; Fri, 14 Feb 2003 17:27:37 -0800 (PST) Received: from caduceus.sc.intel.com (fmr04.intel.com [143.183.121.6]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6B10C43F3F for ; Fri, 14 Feb 2003 17:27:36 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from adsharma@unix-os.sc.intel.com) Received: from petasus.sc.intel.com (petasus.sc.intel.com [10.3.253.4]) by caduceus.sc.intel.com (8.11.6/8.11.6/d: outer.mc,v 1.51 2002/09/23 20:43:23 dmccart Exp $) with ESMTP id h1F1Qa912300; Sat, 15 Feb 2003 01:26:36 GMT Received: from unix-os.sc.intel.com (unix-os.sc.intel.com [143.183.96.244]) by petasus.sc.intel.com (8.11.6/8.11.6/d: inner.mc,v 1.28 2003/01/13 19:44:39 dmccart Exp $) with ESMTP id h1F1Qee29937; Sat, 15 Feb 2003 01:26:40 GMT Received: from unix-os.sc.intel.com.intel.com (adsharma-mobl3.sc.intel.com [143.183.130.51]) by unix-os.sc.intel.com (8.11.6/8.11.2) with ESMTP id h1F1RZr09026; Fri, 14 Feb 2003 17:27:35 -0800 To: Marcel Moolenaar Cc: freebsd-ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: FreeBSD ia64 install problems WAS: install on Dell Precision Work Station 730 References: <03781128C7B74B4DBC27C55859C9D7380B9DDB5D@es06snlnt.sandia.gov> <20030210203522.GA543@athlon.pn.xcllnt.net> <20030214024721.GB1573@athlon.pn.xcllnt.net> From: Arun Sharma Date: 14 Feb 2003 17:27:33 -0800 In-Reply-To: <20030214024721.GB1573@athlon.pn.xcllnt.net> Message-ID: Lines: 74 User-Agent: Gnus/5.09 (Gnus v5.9.0) Emacs/21.2 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-freebsd-ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Marcel Moolenaar writes: > > > > What's the recommended tool to set the GPT partition type ? > > That depends. GNU parted doesn't know about the FreeBSD GUID type nor does it allow entering the guid type manually. It maps filesystem types to GUID types (by design). On further investigation, I found that the FreeBSD installer had written the partitioning info to MBR. Normally MBR contains a fake EFI partition. After the FreeBSD installation, Linux fdisk showed that /dev/sda1 (0xee) EFI GPT had been deleted and replaced by /dev/sda2 (0xa5) FreeBSD with the start and end corresponding to the GPT partition I'd created for FreeBSD. I went back and restored the MBR to it's original form, so that EFI could look into the GPT. Now when I try to boot FreeBSD, it can't find "ufs:da0s2a". So my question is, what do I need to do to the GPT to get FreeBSD recognize it properly ? Have I screwed up on the endianness of the GUID ? I'd like to see an octal dump of a working GPT, if possible. -Arun To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-ia64" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-ia64 Fri Feb 14 17:30: 4 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4310037B401 for ; Fri, 14 Feb 2003 17:30:03 -0800 (PST) Received: from hermes.sc.intel.com (fmr03.intel.com [143.183.121.5]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 91DBA43FB1 for ; Fri, 14 Feb 2003 17:30:02 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from adsharma@unix-os.sc.intel.com) Received: from petasus.sc.intel.com (petasus.sc.intel.com [10.3.253.4]) by hermes.sc.intel.com (8.11.6/8.11.6/d: outer.mc,v 1.51 2002/09/23 20:43:23 dmccart Exp $) with ESMTP id h1F1RhB23090; Sat, 15 Feb 2003 01:27:43 GMT Received: from unix-os.sc.intel.com (unix-os.sc.intel.com [143.183.96.244]) by petasus.sc.intel.com (8.11.6/8.11.6/d: inner.mc,v 1.28 2003/01/13 19:44:39 dmccart Exp $) with ESMTP id h1F1T5e00834; Sat, 15 Feb 2003 01:29:05 GMT Received: from unix-os.sc.intel.com.intel.com (adsharma-mobl3.sc.intel.com [143.183.130.51]) by unix-os.sc.intel.com (8.11.6/8.11.2) with ESMTP id h1F1U1r09062; Fri, 14 Feb 2003 17:30:01 -0800 To: "Barry Wu" Cc: freebsd-ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: problem after freebsd ia64 installed on intel tiger 4 References: From: Arun Sharma Date: 14 Feb 2003 17:29:59 -0800 In-Reply-To: Message-ID: Lines: 15 User-Agent: Gnus/5.09 (Gnus v5.9.0) Emacs/21.2 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-freebsd-ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org "Barry Wu" writes: > Hi, Marcel, Thanks for your help. If it's been overwritten, restore it manually. 2. Boot from the CD. instead of using mfsroot.gz, specify: vfs.root.mountfrom="ufs:da0s??" Then parted is broken. A low-level tool should give low-level access. It also makes certain assumptions that causes it to enforce that the GPT managed space is always an even number of sectors. > When I installed FreeBSD over this partition, the instalation went ok, > but when I reboot, EFI couldn't find fs0 any more. On further > investigation, I found that the FreeBSD installer had written the > partitioning info to MBR. Correct. The installer knows how to use GPT, it just doesn't know how to make one. The issue here is that sysinstall expects a two leveled division. First the disk partitioning (slicing) and then the disklabel partitioning. Under GPT we don't use disklabels anymore by default. The UUID I mentioned has been reserved for GPT based partitioning with disklabels. > Normally MBR contains a fake EFI > partition. > I went back and restored the MBR to it's original form, so that EFI > could look into the GPT.
