I imagine that some of you may have come across the same situation. One of my clients has renamed a directory -backup and now she can't do a thing with it. Any command seems to pickup the -b as an option rather than part of the name. I've tried *backup and still the illegal option error occurs. Any ideas? There are probably better ways but I do this by sending all other traffic through a dummynet pipe which has a bit less bw than my link. As such the remaining bw is reserved for ssh. Something like this works for me to reserve some BW for ssh of my limited 128kbps upstream ADSL: ipfw pipe 1 config bw 104Kbit/s 8 ipfw add pipe 1 tcp from any to any 80 keep-state ipfw add allow tcp from any to any 22 keep-state Hth, Wim. Both are running BIND 8.4.3-REL and both are running IPFW. One is acting as master DNS and the other is acting as slave for IP4 zones (about 65 domain names) outside our firewall. I also have an internal DNS server resolving our private addresses. Last week the named on the slave server started to peg systat's pig load to about 88%. After confirming that this wasn't a DOS attack with my ISP, I am still unable to get the DNS to calm down.... now the process load has extended to the master and systat is reporting about 90% load. Cannot determine why these systems are being hammered -- this is causing latency and other problems on the network -- like our internal server not forwarding requests. And our ISP claims that we are getting excessive packet collisions in our DMZ. The firewall on the master is used as the default route for internal workstations and networks. The firewall on the slave is used for incoming HTTP, FTP and SSH requests and as the gateway for our server farm. Any ideas as to where I should start looking for a solution to this problem? Here are the named.conf(just the options portion... no zones) for both computers and the firewall.rules. Please be kind if it seems like I don't know what I am doing. Recently inherited a Debian Linux box from a small ISP. While it was scheduled to transfer everything over to our chosen platform (FreeBSD) we notices some peculiarities. Evidently one of the previous "sysadmins" had given out his login information to allow people to fix their own problems. Sure enough, check the server and somone had installed a root kit, dont' a poor job, and now the box was melting down. The end result is managed to tar up user web directories, passwd files, etc... and get most of the information off of it. Two major hurdles remain. 1) Mysql won't start due to all the corrupted libraries. While I can copy all the data files from the data directory, not sure how or if we could import all this back into mysql on the new server and still have mysql user/password and permissions still in place (there are about 30 databases) 2) to recreate all the user FTP accounts, we are looking to import the passwd/shadow/group files. We will be editing them to remove all non-priveledged group access, and altering the home directory locations. Moving from debian to FreeBSD - can we recover, and or just use the exited encrypted passwords, or just blank everything and reset them all manually later? So far, the entire system is rebuilt with FreeBSD 4.x stable branch, the only information we are moving over from the old server is - user public_html directories (chowned and chmodded to the users permissions) - portions of the httpd.conf (namely virtualhost containers) edited as necessary - mysql databases any vulnerabilities that could be transported as a result of moving this information over? thanks for any help or direction with the above issues. Had no problem with the user table or anything of the sort. While this doesn't cover everything it perhaps will help on the MySQL aspect of things. FreeRadius dumps core every once in awhile, but we are using a CVS snapshot to get LEAP support, which might have something to do with it. I haven't spent the time to debug it yet. It seems like a very mature product though. I've copied many a binary .ISM file between systems and never had a problem- I just recently copied quite a lot of data from a redhat box to FreeBSD without any glitches simply by scp'ing the whole mysql datadir. I doubt Debian does anything too terribly different. MySQL has its own data file format(s) so there's not a lot to worry about except in HUGE version jumps. MySQL is *very* good about remaining backward compatible, and allowing for easy "upconvert" of data. ISAM table types are machine dependent. Either way if you are moving from x86 to x86 then it doesn't matter what type of tables you are using in mysql. Just copy the database files over. Just make sure that mysql is not running when you try and copy them, it'll corrupt them. I tried this and wound up deleting it the same way I created it: rm `echo -e l\\\010\\\010\\\010` I don't have much shell-fu, so this could probably be done a better way, but it did the trick. I'd recommend a more general fix for the problem, though - maybe something like this: #!/usr/bin/perl opendir F, '.'; for $old (readdir(F)) { $new = $old; $new =~ s/([\x00-\x1f\x7f-\xff])/hex(ord($1))/e; rename $old, $new if $old != $new; } The shell is a fiddly place to be messing around with unprintables - if you use an 8-bit clean language that implements rename() or unlink(), your results will be more predictable. I have seen similar reports from others using it to. As for the migration issues. They are not an issue. You place a separated MX server in front of your current sendmail machine. The separate server doesn't need to be anything special from what I have found. It just needs an excellent operating system FreeBSD with postfix installed and the IMgate mods Have a look at http://imgate.meiway.com Regards Tim ----- Original Message ----- From: "Len Conrad" To: Sent: Saturday, April 26, 2003 1:01 PM Subject: Re: Best Way Blocking Spams > > > What about your solutions ? > > RBL is not a very effective way to block. For those seeking a more hands-off solution that provides end users with complete control over their anti-spam measures, you may want to check out http://www.postini.com. I'm paying about $0.13/mailbox, and while it does add up, it's well worth the cost. In addition, Postini can also scan for viruses and still have the cost less than $0.25/mailbox. The thing I like most about postini, is that no mail is actually rejected. If it's thought to be spam, it's put into a quarantine for 14 days to allow the user time to retrieve those messages. -- Troy Settle Pulaski Networks http://www.psknet.com 540.994.4254 ~ 866.477.5638 Pulaski Chamber 2002 Small Business Of The Year > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-freebsd-isp@freebsd.org > [mailto:owner-freebsd-isp@freebsd.org] On Behalf Of Len Conrad > Sent: Saturday, April 26, 2003 12:07 AM > To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org > Subject: Re: Best Way Blocking Spams > > > > >It has reduced my spam intake by as much as 40% in a week. > I have seen > >similar reports from others using it to. > > one ISP in Bolivia added IMGate in front of this mailbox > server that was > running spamassassin-style content scanner. Murat, I know it's scary to change the way you think and do things, but it is possible to swap in any of the popular sendmail replacements without interuption to user services. In a previous position, we too were using sendmail with several thousand (nearly 6k) users. We managed to make the switch to postfix with no intruption to service (down sendmail, up postfix, 15 seconds at the most). Postfix, if you'll read the docs, is a drop-in replacement for sendmail, requiring absolutely no migration. Qmail can also be configured as a drop-in replacement for sendmail (it can deliver to mbox style mailboxes). We are a Minneapolis based ISP. We didn't like any of the current solutions available, so we developed our own. It's similar to Postini, but we've put a lot of thought into it which makes it very ISP-centric, so I like it better. And it runs on FreeBSD. We have a specific pricing structure for service providers who want to provide it to their customers. It is a commercial solution, but if anyone is looking for another "hands off" approach like Troy mentioned, check http://marvin.sihope.com. If it's a Merc/ROM MUD, the csh 'startup' script that it uses blows chunks with the tcsh /bin/csh; look in that direction. May want to install the old csh and use that for the script. -- Matthew Fuller (MF4839) | fullermd@over-yonder.net Systems/Network Administrator | http://www.over-yonder.net/~fullermd/ "The only reason I'm burning my candle at both ends, is because I haven't figured out how to light the middle yet"
