This patchset should be suitable for most applications. The JDK it produces is de facto compliant, if you recompile Open Motif with the included patches. Use in a production environment is still at your own risk. The main highlight of this release is obviously the update to 1.4.2. However there are a number of other fixes including: 1. Fixes to external process execution. 2. Fixes to the sound code, particularly in regards to recording. 3. Fixes to the IPv6 code. 4. Fixes for Drag and Drop support (with the Open Motif patch) 5. Improved NetBSD support. 6. Support for JavaWS. Thanks again to all the hard work by the BSD Java Porting Team, particularly Alexey Zelkin, and to the FreeBSD Foundation for their continued support. The patchset can, as usual, be downloaded from http://www.eyesbeyond.com/freebsddom/java/jdk14.html -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com Information Technology FreeBSD : glewis@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 11 08:43:14 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 812ED16A4CE for ; Tue, 11 Nov 2003 08:43:14 -0800 (PST) Received: from albatross.mail.pas.earthlink.net (albatross.mail.pas.earthlink.net [207.217.120.120]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C616B43FBD for ; Tue, 11 Nov 2003 08:43:13 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from mvh@ix.netcom.com) Received: from lsanca1-ar6-4-62-200-164.lsanca1.elnk.dsl.genuity.net ([4.62.200.164] helo=netcom1.netcom.com) by albatross.mail.pas.earthlink.net with esmtp (Exim 3.33 #1) id 1AJbbk-0004MF-00 for freebsd-java@freebsd.org; Tue, 11 Nov 2003 08:43:13 -0800 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by netcom1.netcom.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8C97E53FA for ; Tue, 11 Nov 2003 08:43:11 -0800 (PST) Received: from netcom1.netcom.com ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (netcom1.netcom.com [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 00339-04 for ; Tue, 11 Nov 2003 08:43:04 -0800 (PST) Received: by netcom1.netcom.com (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 4608853F9; Tue, 11 Nov 2003 08:43:04 -0800 (PST) From: Mike Harding To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Message-Id: <20031111164304.4608853F9@netcom1.netcom.com> Date: Tue, 11 Nov 2003 08:43:04 -0800 (PST) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at ix.netcom.com Subject: Can somebody commit the various mod_jk pr updates? I build midlets using ant & Sun J2ME Wireless Toolkit 2.0 for Linux (I intended to make a port out of it, but I haven't found the time, yet). What you actually need is the archive that contains the MIDP classes and the preverifier, a linux binary that works under the linux emulation layer (actually the only linux binary in the toolkit that works). You can use the Nokia Developer's kit as well. For testing you need to be able to run the emulators, but I haven't had any success yet. If your port installs documentation into ${DOCSDIR}, it might be easier to use .if !defined(NOPORTDOCS) PORTDOCS= * .endif in your ports Makefile than to maintain a possibly large and changing packing list. The marco was recently added to bsd.port.mk, and can be defined to a list of files and directories relative to ${DOCSDIR}. Shell glob patterns may be used and directories include the entire subtree of contained files and directories. Nope. Every linux ELF binary bombs out in both products, except the most crucial, the preverifier. After a bit of a dig around, I've discovered that if I copied my timezone file from /usr/share/zoneinfo/Pacific/Auckland to /etc/localtime (or reran tzsetup(8)), the problem disappears. My old /etc/localtime differed from the latest one by 82 bytes and had not been modified since Aug 2000 (even though the timezone rules governing NZ hasn't changed since then). On another machine, which also had the problem, the /etc/localtime had not been modified since Nov 2002. Copying the latest zoneinfo across also solved the problem. Looks like some sort of minor binary incompatibility between old zoneinfo files and the newer ones, where the JDK only recognizes the newer zoneinfo files. Ideally I'd love to see a comparison between the blackdown, sun, ibm and freebsd JVMs. We are running the FreeBSD 1.3.1 port in production but some old benchmarks I've found suggest that the IBM JVM might be several orders of magnitude faster. But since the comparisons were several years ago, I'm curious what others have discovered. In case you don't know.... If you would like to open both the TargetDataLine and SourceDataLine in JAVA at the same time, you need to define -DFULL_DUPLEX when you compile jdk1.4.1/2. I think this will do it. I need someone to confirm this because I just changed the #define in j2se/src/solaris/native/com/sun/media/sound/engine/HAE_API_BSDOS.c from "NO_FULL_DUPLEX" to "FULL_DUPLEX" to get this effect. This define uses the code that sets your soundcard to full duplex. I must of found that out and had forgotten about it. Anyway, I've also built it for a 4.8 machine and a 5.1 machine. I built it sometime back using Apache 2.0.46 and Tomcat 4.1.24. If it meets your needs, I can send you the mod_jk2.so file, example workers2.properties for apache and a jk2.properties for tomcat. Basically, I built it by first installing Apache 2.0.46, tomcat 4.1.24, and Ant. I then downloaded the jk2 source file, jakarta-tomcat-connectors-4.1.24-src and built the connector. I have it working on both a 5.1 and a 4.8 machine. I used this book and followed the step by step procedures for building and configuring the mod_jk2 connector: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/tomcat/index.html This is an excellent book by the way. regards John Rushford On Nov 12, 2003, at 5:28 PM, John Page wrote: > This a forwarded note with Kurts helpful clarification regarding the > mod_jk2 > port at the end. > > From: "Kurt Miller" > To: "John Page" > Sent: Wednesday, November 12, 2003 7:16 PM > Subject: Fw: update on JVM ... There has been some confusion about what the jakarta-tomcat-connectors-4.1.X-src archive should be used for. Actually it is being discussed on the tomcat-dev list now. The jakarta-tomcat-connectors-4.1.X-src should be used when building tomcat from source. It should not be used to build the native mod_jk or mod_jk2 connectors. The reason is that the native connectors are released on their own schedule and have their own source archives. If you use jakarta-tomcat-connectors-4.1.X-src to build mod_jk or mod_jk2 you will not be building the last stable release of them. Depending on timing of tomcat releases and jtc releases you will be building from the development version and may not even build (as was recently reported on tomcat-dev for jtc-4.1.29-src). If you want to build the stable versions of mod_jk or mod_jk2 please use jakarta-tomcat-connectors-jk-1.2.5-src for mod_jk or jakarta-tomcat-connectors-jk2-2.0.2-src. Regards, -Kurt P.S. I have a question related to bsd.java.mk: since upgrading the ports tree with this change, I can no longer build ports with a dependence to the native JDK just because bsd.java.mk imposes to have the new 1.4.2 whereas I kept the old 1.4.1. It falls back to the Linux SUN JDK which is not what I want. If 1.4.2 is not available, bsd.java.mk should fall back to 1.4.1 to resolve _JAVA_HOME_FREEBSD_1_4. Well, we have this same problem every time we change a minor version at the moment. We could hack around this in bsd.java.mk, but we currently don't. I'll try and work something up, but at the moment I'd prefer to spend time getting Herve's bsd.java.mk 2.0 committed rather than fixing the current one. If you want to make a patch for the current one I'll certainly review that though and commit. -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com Information Technology FreeBSD : glewis@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Nov 13 14:49:14 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5D13016A4CE for ; Thu, 13 Nov 2003 14:49:14 -0800 (PST) Received: from amsfep11-int.chello.nl (amsfep11-int.chello.nl [213.46.243.20]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4875F43FDD for ; Thu, 13 Nov 2003 14:49:12 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from marc@bowtie.nl) Received: from bowtie.nl ([213.46.7.58]) by amsfep11-int.chello.nl (InterMail vM.5.01.05.17 201-253-122-126-117-20021021) with ESMTP id <20031113224910.IJIE1413.amsfep11-int.chello.nl@bowtie.nl>; Thu, 13 Nov 2003 23:49:10 +0100 Message-ID: <3FB40A69.8060005@bowtie.nl> Date: Thu, 13 Nov 2003 23:49:13 +0100 From: Marc van Kempen User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.5) Gecko/20031007 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Subject: java3d port? I just tried doing it on FreeBSD 5.1, drm support is in the kernel since 5.0 so I apparently don´t need the drm-kmod port, I installed the linux_mesa3d port and the linux_dri-4.3.0_1.tbz. My XFree86 version is 4.3.0_1, java version is linux-sun-jdk1.4.2. When I try running a demo I get the following error: ************************************************************************ *** ERROR: Canvas3D constructed with a null GraphicsConfiguration *** This will cause a NullPointerException in a subsequent release ************************************************************************ An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM. However, I'm still having problems w/ Yahoo Chat. As with 1.4.1, anything that opens up a new window (user properties, text color change, private message, etc) causes Firebird (0.7) to crash within moments. I would be happy to help diagnose the problem, but any person working on the jdk should be able to reproduce it themselves without any trouble at all. Let me know if I can help though. As you can see below I installed both the mesa and dri port, removing the mesa port and re-installing the dri port fixed my problem almost. Now I just had to get libcstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3 from somewhere (do a search on google for example), installed it and now everything runs flawlessly, even accelerated as far as I can tell. (ofcourse you also need to get the java3d package from blackdown) Regards, Marc.
