I have a similar problem in that dhclient is running, a lease has been granted, but the NIC does not have an IP address. My problem occurs with an Orinoco card (I have both a Silver and Gold, and I don't know if the problem occurs with both or just one). I'd be interested if your use of a /tmp/foo solution works. While I have a hibernation partition on my harddrive (and suspend-to-disk does work under Windows), the FreeBSD 'zzz' only suspends to RAM. Could this be another limitation of the APM implementation in the BIOS? 2. After I wake up the computer from its suspended mode, the pccardd believes to receive a 'remove' event for my Lucent WaveLAN card. Physically removing and re-inserting reactivates it, but I wonder if there's a software way to achieve the same result. I have a Xircom Credit Card CE3B-10/100 16Bit pcmcia card inserted to slot 2. This is my first time installing FreeBSD to a laptop, so I'll try to provide as much info as I can. I get asked the question "PC-Card device detected, do you want to use the pc-card device as the installation media?" early during the installation, to which I respond by selecting "No" - as I'm installing from CDROM, and not performing a network installation. I go through what appears to be the regular server / pc installation procedures, but when I get to the network configuration part, my pcmcia nic isn't listed amongst the devices shown (which are ppp, slip & sio). Normally with a server / pc installation, my pci nic would be there, and I'd have the opportunity to configure it there and then. Is this not supposed to be the same for laptops? Have I missed a step earlier on? If so, what should I have selected / come across before this stage? If not, at what point does the pcmcia network configuration come into play? If there's any further info I get provide, please let me know. I'd appreciate any help, pointers or links to a how-to, if it comes to that. Thanks. I'm not sure what it's called, other than ngbt-fbsd? I've been following the instructions from Pav's BSD corner at http://www.oook.cz/bsd/bluetooth.html. After building the modules, editing the /boot/loader.conf file and reboot the system, I plug in the USB Bluetooth device, the system detects a USB device being plugged in. However, I do not get the following expected output on the console: ubt0: vendor 0x0a12 product 0x0001, rev 1.10/5.25, addr 2 ubt0: Interface 0 endpoints: interrupt=0x81, bulk-in=0x82, bulk-out=0x2 ubt0: Interface 1 (alt.config 5) endpoints: isoc-in=0x83, isoc-out=0x3; wMaxPacketSize=49; nframes=6, buffer size=294 This output may be redirected to a syslog file. What is the name and location of the log file? I've successfully setup a Bluetooth PAN on Linux Debian systems where I had to mount a USB bus at /proc/bus/usb. Is this also necessary on FreeBSD? I am using FreeBSD 5.0-RELEASE with an USB Ericsson Bluetooth training kit. Input on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. The Orinoco card is the only one so far that both accepts the crypto instructions and gets an IP via DHCP, the other two (both Prism 2.5 based, by the way) are getting configured alright, but dhclient fails. Needless to say, the cards are all in working order, all three work in Linux with the exact same startup procedure. When I bought it at Fry's it was on sale, AND had a $10 rebate (over now, sorry, I got it on the last day). I had very good experiences with it at both of the conferences that I attended recently. The wi man page has very good instructions on how to use it in various circumstances. In fact, I liked this card so much that I bought the Netgear MA 311 mini-PCI version (which is basically just the same Intersil Prism 2.5 guts as the 401 glued to a PCI card) so I could set up my little wireless network at home. The good news is that once I updated the firmware, it was quite easy to set up hostap mode with this card following the instructions in wi(4). The bad news is that flashing the firware involved shuffling cards between boxes so that I could get it in a windows box. AFAIK, there is no unix firmware flasher. Following disussion on the -mobile list, I used the Intersil firmware and Windows flasher available at http://www.demarctech.com/products/reliawave-rwz/reliawave-rwz-200mw-prism2-5-pcmcia-card.html I didn't have a lick of trouble updating either card. It all went quite smoothly. I used the prism25-156.zip version, which as far as I could see is the latest. I ended up spending less than $150 for the whole setup, so if you're looking for a cheap way to play with WiFi, I can definitely recommend this option. The other piece of info I thought I should pass on is that a few people (including the guy at Fry's, who actually had a clue) told me that the newer linksys products are definitely to be avoided. Apparently they are having quality control issues in their factory or something, but the guy at Fry's said he's been getting a ton of returns on linksys lately, but almost none on the netgear stuff. A couple other people warned me about the linksys stuff too, but since the price was right on netgear, and since people had several good things to say about the MA 401, it was an easy decision. As for 802.11a, I was told by several people in a position to know that it's not going to be available in FreeBSD for "a while." I hope this is useful. Thanks to all those who were kind enough to send me information, and answer my goofy questions. If I've screwed something up, or if someone has better info, please feel free. It is really helpful. Does anyome have any more to add -- I am going to get somehardware in the next 24 hots so all information would be appreciated. Is there anyone with experience of USB client devices on FreeBSD.. it would have some advantages for my application because one can run a usb cable for a fair distance. Which raises another hardware isssue which is not exactly on topic (sorry guys)- does anyone know who I can order the tools/fittings/cables I need to construct longer usb cable runs? I have two orinoco wireless cards, each locates on a FreeBSD 4.7 box. The addresses are 10.10.10.10 and 10.10.10.12 separately with netmask 0xffffff00, thus the broadcast address is 10.10.10.255. At this point, one of them is set to "ibss-master", while the other is "ibss". Its used to work when I try broadcast ping by "ping 10.10.10.255", but today it is weird that it totally doesn't work at all. Is there anybody over there can help me with this? By the way, the firmware version is 8.72.01. Many thanks in advance. We now have the most powerful, deceitful, arrogant, and belligerent administration in US history. And almost everything they're doing is wrong. Here's one example to illustrate the power of Emperor Bush. He can start a unilateral, preemptive, unprecedented war costing hundreds of billions of dollars. His justification for it constantly changes, and is buttressed by a stream of lies. Simultaneously he can demand and get from congress a huge tax cut for the rich, despite the fact that we're in a recession and there's a huge budget deficit. And while doing all this outrageous stuff, he remains extremely popular. I'm thinking about what I, an average Joe, can do to slow down this juggernaut. One thing I did was put up this lighted sign outside of my house: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~sleator/pictures/no-war.jpg But I think the real problem, and the reason for Bush's popularity, is that the American people basically don't have a clue about what's really happening. The mainstream media are not communicating it. Here are four examples to illustrate this point. 1. Remember the huge crowd of Iraqis cheering and pulling down a statue of Saddam? It turns out that the crowd was very small and some (all?) of the jubilant members of the crowd were actors. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article2842.htm 2. Remember the rampant looting of Baghdad? Perhaps you knew that the US didn't lift a finger to stop it. But did you know that it was encouraged by US troops as a photo op? http://truthout.org/docs_03/041603D.shtml 3. Did you know that Richard Perle (a key author of the US's current Iraq policy) worked to undermine the Camp David accords in the summer of 2000? http://www.guardian.co.uk/israel/Story/0,2763,342857,00.html 4. There's an outrageous, little-known part of NAFTA called chapter 11, which foreign corporate investors are using to challenge laws designed to protect public health, environmental regulations, and jury verdicts. The cases are heard before a secret international trade tribunal. http://www.citizen.org/publications/release.cfm?ID=7076 These are just a tiny sample to illustrate the problems of missing and/or misleading stories in the media. This situation goes a long way toward explaining why the war is so much more popular in the US than it is everywhere else. So I'm suggesting (to all the addresses in my inbox over the last few years) some good alternative sources of information that I've found. A good place to start is http://www.truthout.org They collect stories from reputable sources all over the world. You can sign up for a daily mailing of stories of their suggested stories. I've included one below. Sign up for their mailings at: http://216.25.72.229/membership/sub_mgmt.php http://www.fair.org is a media watchdog group. They maintain a web site, and they let you sign up for sporadic mailings about media deceptions and bias. They often have action alerts about specific outrages in the media. Another very good organization is http://www.moveon.org They email reminders when congress is considering important issues. They make it easy to contact your congress person to voice your opinion. They also run ads in mainstream publications and on TV. I also highly recommend the book "What Liberal Media?" by Eric Alterman. He explains in great detail all the ways in which the media system is broken, and how it got this way. Here are some other great sites to take a look at: http://www.consortiumnews.com http://www.copvcia.com http://www.democraticunderground.com http://www.informationclearinghouse.info http://www.tompaine.com http://www.zmag.org/weluser.htm I hope you find this mailing useful, and I apologize if you got this more than once. Feel free to distribute this further. One warning: If you keep up with these sites, your world view will start to diverge from the "standard" (i.e. false) world view. You risk being viewed as a conspiracy theorist or a nut. It worked (and still works) perfectly under FreeBSD-4.3-Release and both wireless cards that I have just work. With the advent of 4.4, the laptop would no longer boot without the following in /boot/loader.conf: hw.pcic.intr_path="1" hw.pcic.irq="0" At the time of 4.4-R (and the 5.0 of that time), I was greeted on boot by: pccard: card inserted, slot 0 pcic0: Static bug detected, ignoring hardware. And it did indeed ignore the card. BTW, it printed those two lines whether or not a card was inserted. I was asked to supply various extra pieces of information and supplied all that was asked for. And I never heard anything more about it. So I have had to keep using 4.3 on that box. But 4.3 is now too old to continue with and I really want to run an up-to-date version of FreeBSD on this machine. So I have recently tried both 4.7-R and 5.0-R to see what has changed. Neither works, so I'll concentrate on 4.7-R from here on, as I'd rather run 4.x at this stage. For both 4.7-R and 5.0-R, the settings shown above in /boot/loader.conf are still required to prevent a panic on boot. And when it boots, although it correctly detects insertion and removal of the wireless card, it reports an error (wrapped with backslashes for legibility): demon /kernel: pccard: card inserted, slot 0 demon pccardd[44]: Card "Cabletron"("RoamAbout 802.11 DS") \ [Version 01.01] [] matched "Cabletron" ("RoamAbout \ 802.11 DS") [(null)] [(null)] demon pccardd[44]: Failed to allocate IRQ for Cabletron demon /kernel: pccard: card removed, slot 0 So the card is correctly detected, which is a step forward. But it doesn't work. To complete the picture as far as I can, here are the settings reported by sysctl hw.pcic: hw.pcic.irq: 0 hw.pcic.boot_deactivated: 0 hw.pcic.pd6722_vsense: 1 hw.pcic.ignore_function_1: 0 hw.pcic.intr_path: 1 hw.pcic.init_routing: 0 hw.pcic.ignore_pci: 0 hw.pcic.pd6729_intr_path: 1 I have attached three files: 1. A dmesg of a boot that included the panic if the sysctls are not provided at boot. 2. A dmesg of a successful boot with the sysctls in place. 3. The output of "pccardc dumpcis". Is there some other simple magic that I can try to get this to function, or is there some other information that I should supply to make diagnosis easier?
