I have to decide today if I have to downgrade my Laptop to 4.9pre. I'd like to help to troubleshoot the issues with -currents instabilities, but on the other hand I sometimes need a Laptop with network support at work != WinXP to do my usual scripting tasks with Cisco devices and such ... 1) can I use 16 and 32 Bit PCMCIA network cards under -current using one kernel or do I need to compile a special kernel for 16 Bit PCMCIA cards ? Do I have perhaps to compile a special kernel for 16 Bit PCMCIA ethernet cards with OLDCARD settings ? 2) My 16 Bit Xircom card doesn't run anymore under -current... Its a Xircom Realport Ethernet 10/100 + Modem 56 aka REM-56G-100. Has perhaps the xe driver got the same performance enhancements that broke the xl driver ?? What do you think do I need to do, to get it working again under -current ? 3) Q: / idea: could somebody make a kernel option from these performance enhancements ? Since they seem to break drivers. Is perhaps a damn work, if every driver has to be touched... But theoretically even under -current things shouldn't be committed that break thinks on the long run ... And since I tried 2 separate -currents which are about 1 month away from each other, -currents PCMCIA support concerning NICs seems to be broken since a relatively long time. The longer answer is that it is unclear what to do with resources not in the CIS. The pedantically correct thing to do is to not allow the driver to allocate that resource. This might have been sufficient in the xl case, but I did this at one time and found that bad things happened. however, that was before scott's fixes to the cis parsing and maybe we can do it now. I liked the Intel option but the 2011 card is discontinued. I also liked the Linksys option but I'm reading about some of the newer firmwares not being supported (>2.0?). Can anyone recommend a nice little PCMCIA 802.11b card that works with WEP and is supported in 5.x? Also how can I tell the firmware version on the Linksys WPC11 cards? I'm looking at one right now and it looks like I'd have to plug it in to get the firmware version (not my card though so I can't buy/keep it if it's supported anyway...). ===== ----------------------------------------------------------- Emo is what happens when the glee club goes punk. ----------------------------------------------------------- __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I think you may be a little confused as to the scope of the change. A while ago, the xl driver preferred to use the I/O ports. Now it (and only it) prefers to use mmio. The xe driver hasn't changed much in a long time, and still only uses I/O ports as best as I can recollect. The default changed when mux changed the xl driver. Thanks. That worked. BTW, if you own an A30p, beware the latest Aug 22 BIOS update (1.17). It causes frequent lockups on resume from suspend. Backing down to the last update (1.16) makes the lockups far less frequent (weekly or monthly, as opposed to daily). -- Jesse Guardiani, Systems Administrator WingNET Internet Services, P.O. I found it necessary to rebuild because I had forgotten to enable "device pcm" for sound in my kernel config. Unfortunately, my onboard ethernet device (bge0) went away after the upgrade. I tried disabling sound and recompiling, but it still didn't work. Interestingly, when I installed from the 5.1-release ISO, the NIC didn't work either...cvsuping some time before September 11 (sorry I don't have more precise dates) got me sources that got the interface working. Windows xp identifies it as a "broadcom 570x Gigabit Integrated Controller" on pci bus 2, device 0, function 0, irq 11. I did a cp -R from /boot to /boot.good before I enabled the sound device, so I have a kernel on the system that will work with the nic, if that's any help for debugging. Booting the old kernel with -v, I can see it attaching the driver to the device.... Please let me know if any other information would be helpful. Feel free to ignore the ACPI problems, that's another email :) Thanks, Mike Hunter Here are my dmesg's (boot -v) from both the new (no bge0) and old (working bge0) kernels and my kernel config. I really hope to make it my default OS (vs WinXP). I'm trying to figure out if I should install 4.x or 5.x. I'll be installing on a Dell Inspiron 7500. I have a few peripherals: - a USB card reader for my digial camera [Olympus/Camedia MAUSB-10 xD-picture card reader] - Windows formatted iPod (connects via Firewire PCCard). I assume there is no way to use this under FreeBSD anyway, so I'll have to dual-boot to XP to use the iPod - External hard drive which also connects via Firewire (which I use for backups, but mostly there are just the mp3s from my iPod) - USB CD-RW drive, which I also don't know if I can use under FreeBSD (Dell has a built in USB1 port) So... thoughts? I plan to download an ISO tomorrow. I plan to download an ISO tomorrow. IMO if you are not interested in hacking on the OS in some way then 5.x isn't ready for primetime yet. Depends what you want to do and if you want to have to migrate later when it is ready. I have installed it on this machine previously but couldn't get my Xircom CardBus Ethernet 10/100 + 56K Modem card working so threw the towel in. I have Slackware 9 on it right now and it works flawlessly after a bit of tweaking (well, all the devices such as the Xircom, sound, DVD work) but really want to get 5.1 going. After googling around for FreeBSD on a 600E I found an article (focussing on 4.7) which suggested I recompile the kernel in order to get the Xircom working. I did this, rebooted and still no ethernet. I know this is a bit vague but if anyone has some tips on how to get this card going I'd be most grateful. CardBus is only supported under -current for starters... -- Doug White | FreeBSD: The Power to Serve dwhite@gumbysoft.com | www.FreeBSD.org
