Unless of course you fancy tackling the problem that there is no FreeBSD A/V codec abstraction and a corresponding lack of drivers for codecs. Certainly it would be nice to have support for some of these hardware codecs. -- C:>WIN | Directable Mirrors The computer obeys and wins. |A Better Way To Focus The Sun You lose and Bill collects. | licenses available - see: | http://www.sohara.org/ From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Apr 10 10:10:19 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B9F3E37B405 for ; Thu, 10 Apr 2003 10:10:19 -0700 (PDT) Received: from hak.cnd.mcgill.ca (hak.cnd.mcgill.ca [132.216.11.133]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 770B243FB1 for ; Thu, 10 Apr 2003 10:10:18 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from mat@hak.cnd.mcgill.ca) Received: from hak.cnd.mcgill.ca (localhost.cnd.mcgill.ca [127.0.0.1]) by hak.cnd.mcgill.ca (8.12.3p2/8.12.3) with ESMTP id h3AHCbqC062698 for ; Thu, 10 Apr 2003 13:12:37 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from mat@hak.cnd.mcgill.ca) Received: (from mat@localhost) by hak.cnd.mcgill.ca (8.12.3p2/8.12.3/Submit) id h3AHCbww062697 for freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org; Thu, 10 Apr 2003 13:12:37 -0400 (EDT) Date: Thu, 10 Apr 2003 13:12:37 -0400 From: Mathew Kanner To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20030410171237.GC58455@cnd.mcgill.ca> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Organization: I speak for myself, operating in Montreal, CANADA User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.3i Subject: mpu401 progress X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 10 Apr 2003 17:10:20 -0000 Hello, A note to say that I can play midi on my cmi soundcard using a generic mpu401 module. Reading is untested by I think it works. I can also read/write with es137x, but that's unrelated. I'm excited about this because I now know what bits are needed to make an average soundcard provide midi ( provided they have midi to provide ). So, if you a sound card that uses a driver other than snd_cmi and want to help/play, have a card with a generic mpu401, and can read a spec or code, the following is what is needed: pci register, command to enable the uart base address of the uart This is for -current only. I'll see what I can do. This avoids me from looking at gnu code... Just kidding but I did find it hard to track down my soundcard spec... IIRC, the soundblaster live is beyond what I can do safely without an actual card; When I saw code for it they are using mm registers instead of io ports, and that beyond what my driver can do for the moment. In the meantime, I converting mpu401 to use use a mii-like bus/driver interface, now that I've looked at it, this is where I should have started. Cheers, --Mat -- Brain: Moo. We are a cow. Oh. I had (foolishly) assumed that DVD+RW was the rewritable version of a DVD+R, similiar to naming for CDs. I gather that is not the case? (The media says DVD+R, but it has the RW logo on it, too.) The funny thing it that I eventually could mount it, after burning and mounting an identical CD+RW. Maybe writing/mounting the CD+RW put or left the device in a state in which it would recognize the CD+R? Strange. Let me know if you'd like me to test some things. I'd be happy to produce a few coasters to help the project out. I have no problems playing divx with it. (Actually, I am making some divx films myself with a DV camcorder, Kino and mjpegtools. Hopefully one day, there's also some GUI like Kino I can use for editing the movies in FreeBSD...) Uhhh, take a look at mjpeg (not tried it yet) and avidemux (which hasn't yet migrated from 'graphics' to 'multimedia'), both are in -ports. I found that 'avidemux' gets kind of unhappy unless you give it raw video/audio, then it seems to work OK. I just used 'mencode -oac pcm -ovc raw' to get files it'll work with. HTH. Yeah, this is the hallmark of VBR coded MP3s. mpg123 won't play them but xmms, and even the old xaudio tools, can play them. -- Doug White | FreeBSD: The Power to Serve dwhite@gumbysoft.com | www.FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Apr 12 07:11:35 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DBFE537B401 for ; Sat, 12 Apr 2003 07:11:35 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mailout08.sul.t-online.com (mailout08.sul.t-online.com [194.25.134.20]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9A84343F93 for ; Sat, 12 Apr 2003 07:11:34 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from Alexander@Leidinger.net) Received: from fwd03.sul.t-online.de by mailout08.sul.t-online.com with smtp id 194LjB-0007c7-06; Sat, 12 Apr 2003 16:11:33 +0200 Received: from Andro-Beta.Leidinger.net (520065502893-0001@[80.131.122.109]) by fmrl03.sul.t-online.com with esmtp id 194Lj9-0fu24mC; Sat, 12 Apr 2003 16:11:31 +0200 Received: from Magelan.Leidinger.net (Magelan [192.168.1.1]) h3CEBUBR020912 for ; Sat, 12 Apr 2003 16:11:30 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from Alexander@Leidinger.net) Received: from Magelan.Leidinger.net (netchild@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by Magelan.Leidinger.net (8.12.9/8.12.9) with SMTP id h3CEBUrI001843 for ; Sat, 12 Apr 2003 16:11:30 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from Alexander@Leidinger.net) Date: Sat, 12 Apr 2003 16:11:30 +0200 From: Alexander Leidinger To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Message-Id: <20030412161130.17dcf45c.Alexander@Leidinger.net> In-Reply-To: <16023.8152.459169.401590@guru.mired.org> References: <16023.8152.459169.401590@guru.mired.org> X-Mailer: Sylpheed version 0.8.9claws (GTK+ 1.2.10; i386-portbld-freebsd5.0) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Sender: 520065502893-0001@t-dialin.net Subject: Re: How to play new flavor of mp3 files X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 12 Apr 2003 14:11:36 -0000 On Fri, 11 Apr 2003 15:04:40 -0500 Mike Meyer wrote: > I've recently started seeing mp3 files that neither mpg123 nor > plaympeg can deal with. Not being able to rewind the stream may indicate an error in the encoder (assuming you use a recent version of mpg123). Do you know which encoder was used? If not, there's "encspot" for Windows which is able to guess the used encoder. You could also try to play them with madplay (audio/mad), this is a decoder which was specially programmed to comply to the official spec. If it doesn't moan, the mp3 files should be ok (and you may have found a bug in mpg123). First question, can you play this sort of mp3 with ANY mp3 player? It looks like these have been incorrectly generated. I've generated VBR mp3 with both lame and other tools so I am sure xmms can play them. However, neither xmms, gstreamer-player, mpg123 nor mplayer can play the mp3 URL you supplied.
