So that if you = change your dns entry any time, you dont have to update you apache = configuration as well. In the DNS, setup both domain names to point to the same ip address. For = example, the domain names exampleone.org and exampletwo.org have dns entries pointing to 192.168.10.5= 5 and aliases www.exampleone.org and www.exampletwo.org referring to the = original domain names And setup VirtualHost in apache httpd.conf. E.g. ServerAdmin webmaster@exampleone.org DocumenRoot /www/docs/exampleone.org ServerName www.exampleone.org ...and other settings... ServerAdmin webmaster@exampletwo.org DocumenRoot /www/docs/exampletwo.org ServerName www.exampletwo.org ...and other settings... Apache will pick files up from /www/docs/exampleone.org when www.exampleone= .org is requested and /www/docs/exampletwo.org when www.exampletwo.org is = requested. Consult the apache manual for various other settings that you can do. Regards, Neeraj >>> Gannater J=E1nos 02/17/03 05:58PM >>> I have assined another IP address for my computer. It isn't about FreeBSD specifically, it's about the best practices and policies for large sites no matter what OS you are using: from how to build a good email infrastructure, how to manage your boss, write security policies that get followed, plan a budget, hire and fire sysadmins, and so on. (the first half is all technical, the second half is all operational and organizational). It's been well-received in the open source community, most likely because it has a "how to convince your boss to adopt open source" section :-). Peter Salus in Usenix ;login: has mentioned it favorably a few times. You may want to use the newer ports. Second, qt-3.x requires the XFree86-4 libraries by default, in order to get the Xft support (specifically, the freetype2 dependency). Make sure you're not using XFree86-3.x. Qt should still work with the older X, but since your problem is with Xft, I'm assuming that your problem is related to this. Third, binary packages for Qt and KDE are available at . These are for KDE 3.1. Additional Qt/KDE information for FreeBSD is available here as well. I currently use multiple machines at home running FreeBSD. I've been in the habit of updating the ports collection and /usr/src on each machine individually. I know there's a more efficient way to do this. I have an old Pentium I machine. Is it possible to use this machine as a simple file server where I can update the ports collection and /usr/src then "push" it out to my other machines? By that, I mean once the file server is updated, some type of script runs that automatically updates the other machines' ports and /usr/src? Is this even doable? I don't know. Link's to articles/web sites that might explain this would be great. Also, is there a specific term for what I'm trying to achieve? Thanks for your time! If this network is exposed to the public, then you'll need to take care that you properly secure NFS. Taking a quick look at freebsddiary, I see that there's an article there at . Amazingly enough, the author is using NFS for a ports tree. FreeBSD Diary is your friend in need! I would like to share some experiences and observations I have made during my run-ins with UNIX OSs in the past. I'm currently in my fourth inning, and have finally gotten myself together and produced a running, stable system. I choose to still label myself a newbie because I still scream in frustration every day over some mundane, essential task that must be done that I have no idea how to go about doing. In case you come from a "Windows" environment(like I did), FreeBSD might seem daunting at first. Whereas you are used to having the computer scratch your back and make you tea by the very flick of the power switch, in UNIX you are left with a rather simple looking (and often cryptically labelled) command prompt and a blinking cursor. None of the commands that normally do something, don't work at all, and if they do, they sure don't do what you expect them to! But don't panic (like I did) and run off screaming to get your Windows CD (like I did). First of all, calm down. Seek out sources of information like this, the FreeBSD website and others. And the most important thing; read. The man pages count in the thousands, so there's lots of good stuff for the rainy days. Wonder what dd does? A little hunting and pecking will have "man dd" typed in no time, and voila! Second, be prepared to reinstall the entire OS. Several times. The tampering of config files by careless newbies can wreak havoc on any system, particularly a UNIX one. Reinstallation is frequently the fastest, most efficient way to get the system back up. If you have just got the command line interface up, and you like to have your computer scratch your back and make tea for you, you have some nice surprises coming. If you haven't yet installed X-Windows and either KDE or GNOME, you will find you get a graphical desktop every bit as powerful and easy to use as Windows - better in many respects - with all the stability of FreeBSD underneath it. And it is much easier to automate tasks, and understand what the system is actually doing. I have been using it as my desktop at home since 1997, and every day I have to use Windows at work, I feel bored and tired of it. Hey Henrik! I'm also a FreeBSD newbie and will probably consider myself one for a very long time to come! My experiences are in stereo as I am setting up 2 boxes at the same time. One is for work and the other is mine. They both are/will be webserver/database servers when I'm done with them. (or else they'll be piles of rubbish cause I have a sledge hammer around here somewhere ;-) ) Reinstalls...LOL! On 1 machine I've reinstalled 4 times, on the other 3 times. I kept messing up the makeworld/installworld part by not understanding mergemaster on mine. The server for my job had a problem with the hard drive that finally required me to zero it out, then the 3rd install/setup went beautifully. I also, thanks to this wonderful list, learned how to do backups to the zip drive (yeah!!) so anything I change in the /etc, /www, user/var or anywhere else can be safely backed up before I mess with anything else. What's really cool is actually remembering what commands are needed to do tasks like starting/stopping apache, editing configs and firewall files, making backup kernel configs, updating ports, restarting services and all sorts of things :-) I work with the command prompt because 1)I think that's the way most production UNIX machines are run, less memory-intensive that way and 2)these computers are strictly servers, not for desktop and don't need a graphical interface. That joy I'm saving for this machine (an NT) and I'll get around to converting when I feel more comfortable messing with FreeBSD :-) Ya'll Rock! Carol who goes back to setting up her server. The other is up and running and needs a little fine-tuning, but it works. Yeah! But I am addicted to this OS. It is an amazing experience doing even the most trivial thing. For instance Monday I got my scroll wheel working! Granted I have never worked on it before, and it is a really easy thing to do, but once it was done I felt like I had accomplished something grand. I have a production firewall, and am working on an email and webserver solution for my work, everyone needs to use this OS! I want to thank everyone who works on this 'crack' for their hard work. I am trying to find ways to get involved whether with advocacy or committing, but either way I want everyone using this...even though there is a ways to go with an end-user desktop machine. I can honestly say that I don't understand Linux, but BSD is simple in comparison (the whole idea that is...). But I guess to each their own. For all you newbies, subscribe to all the mail lists (especially if you want to learn more and more...) there is a plethora of information out there and you can learn a ton. Sounds like I'm not the only one out there! I've been at the BSD thing for a year and a half or so, but I approached it from the workstation/mutlimedia end, then went on to begin to learn about the server side. I'm running a 4.6.2 gateway, 4.7r web/(mail?)server, and two workstations, 4-stable and 5.0r. It's been nothing but rewarding, and I kick myself for all the time I spent totally ignorant of BSD. Reinstalls just seem to be the easiest, quickest way to restore a system after a foobar when you're in the learning stage. It seems that as you learn, reinstalling seems less necessary (unless you make sweeping permissions changes without understanding what you're doing) to correct most mistakes/problems. Yeah, FreeBSD rocks! It has really inspired me to learn more and more by putting a friendly face of sorts onto an intimidating set of tools. The documentation for FreeBSD and its related issues is absolutely incredible, and there are some brilliant folks supporting it. Thanks whole-heartedly to all the FreeBSD contributors, maintainers, staff, and users! It is also available at http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies/) FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "subscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message.
