Unfortunately, my Win98 isn't happy sharing, even though I gave it most of the disk space on the 30 gig hard drive. lol! I have to learn how to be quicker in making the windows bootup screen not show up (it covers the selection of dos/bsd.) I got totally frustrated last night and ended up turning off the darned thing when I rebooted about 6 times and it still insisted on booting into windows. The first few reboots weren't any trouble (initializing the wireless network card took a few attempts and I still haven't gotten it right. Got a number/letter wrong somewhere, I'm sure) but after about the 4th try, it just starting booting into windows even when I pressed the F2 key. This is what I wanted to turn my linux box into for a long time! Anyway; it's an Athlon CPU, and when compiling my custom kernel, I couldn't find any option more specific then CPU_I686 (also said ATHLON_SSE_HACK). I only want to make sure that it really gets optimized for my Athlon (so far, all ports compile with -mcpu=pentiumpro). Is it so that for FreeBSD5.0 there is just a 'class' of I686 CPUs (without differentiating more) or is there some other option I missed? btw, what is fb50's analogy of what linux names /proc/cpuinfo ? I am on constant lookout for optimisation tweaks! Asside from disabling debugging and other unneeded options I havent found anything that relates to AthlonXP specific options with the kernel (except for the MAKEOPTIONS (?) flag)... I dont think the SSE_HACK option needs to be enabled if you see SSE in the start of dmseg... but, checkout the compiler options and edit /etc/make.conf accordingly (man make.conf). I cannot remember whether the MAKEOPTIONS in the kernel config override or compliment those in /etc/make.conf... I just put my options in the /etc/make.conf :) It kind of pays to know what youre doing when adding more options though... strange things can happen :) I think its pretty safe to add -msse -mmmx -mcpu=athlon-xp to the CFLAGS option though (I think -march=whatever gets added from that other CPU option) :) I dont have access to my FreeBSD box right now... I would suggest getting a benchmark from the ports tree as well (something which I havent gotten around to yet). They're for accessing functionality. If you run dmesg and look near the top, you'll find that FreeBSD kernel is detecting your CPU as a "686-class CPU" regardless. The kernel is not optimized because it's just too close to the metal. Optimize it too much and it will break every time gcc changes its optimizer ever so slightly. On the plus side, you can edit /etc/make.conf to optimize for the Athlon. This will apply to buildworld (not recommended) and building ports. See the handbook for complete information. I'm just curious as to why someone would be so keen to optimise the kernel: the discussion seemed to be aimed at squeezing the last quantum of performance out of a specific processor. This isn't ever likely to be possible for a system that can run on different processors like FreeBSD at least my understanding is that portability comes at the cost of performance. The best way to optimise is to remove things you don't need then hand tweak the code, use a compiler that's optimised for the processor, ie. Intel rather than gcc and enable all the switches. But as was said - there is a separate mailing list for this. I installed FreeBSD 4.8 using the ISO's which I downloaded and I need some help. 1) I've heard various and often confusing instructions about post installation tasks specifically CVSUP, how do I use CVSup? I've installed and read the man page (which isn't too helpful) and I've heard various confusing instructions on how to update packages on my system. What do I do? Thus far I've installed it and configured ports-supfile and I've thus far executed "make world". What now - am I going the right way? 2) I've used the locate feature previously and am familiar with it, on Linux! How do I update the locate database? I've used slocate -u / previously which updates the database starting at / 3) How do I refresh my paths? This is a very confusing question so allow me to explain! After installing a package I cannot execute the binary unless I am in the directory in which the binary resides - even though the path to the binary is in my "path" statement in ~/.profile. How do I get this to work? 4) Am I right in thinking that all I need to do to install a package from /usr/ports is to 4.1) make 4.2) make install ? Are there other (optional/necessary steps) to perform? 5) Should I wish to install PHP from ports, how do I go about compiling it (or any other package) with certain options, eg for PHP, how do I compile it with MySql support Thus far I'm very excited about getting it working and making use of all the features I've read - maybe I'll be replacing my Linux servers in the next year or so too! First of all, the man pages are great, but they're intended as references, not tutorials. What you need is to read is the FreeBSD Handbook, supplemented by the FreeBSD FAQ. Both should have been installed by default to /usr/share/doc/handbook and /usr/share/doc/faq. They are HTML, so read them in any browser. Plain text versions are installed as well. > 1) I've heard various and often confusing instructions about post > installation tasks specifically CVSUP, how do I use CVSup? Note that I answered your questions by telling you where to look in the documentation, instead of giving you specific technical answers. If you want specific technical answers, ask at freebsd-questions. But try to do some research on your own first, like reading the docs, googling, etc. The people on -questions can spot those who haven't bothered to read the handbook a mile away... The reason why this list isn't for technical questions, is because this list is populated by newbies. Do you really want your technical question answered by someone who doesn't know any more about it than you? Of course not! So ask your technical questions in the group where all the experts hang out. I keep an eye on it because I'm always interested in new ways to break software. ;-) Also, by looking at things people have problems figuring out and/or understanding I find I can relate to better and write better documentation for users of new (to them) software. Keep those emails coming to the newbie list! I use Emacs, XMMS, etc. Other people will use other things because you have so much variety. If you'd like to know more about what's available in the ports tree and what it's good for I'd suggest you go to www.onlamp.com/bsd and read Dru Lavigne's column "FreeBSD Basics". She does a great job getting you more information and detail about FreeBSD. hth, Maurice -----Original Message----- From: owner-freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org [mailto:owner-freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org] On Behalf Of Cortland Naegelin Sent: Tuesday, April 29, 2003 11:10 PM To: Freebsd for newbies Subject: Ports Could people give me an idea at what are their favorite ports are and why. there are of what maybe 3000. As for what's interesting, pick a subject. On my desktop machine, running RELENG_5_0 with XF86 4.2.0 and KDE 3.1, I use sylpheed-claws, mozilla, opera, gaim, and xmms on a regular basis. There's also wine, acroread, grub, sudo, aterm, cvsup, and portupgrade. Then there's all the dependancies and other "behind the scenes" ports like image libraries, XF86 fonts and libraries, OpenGL and other rendering libraries, gnome libs, Qt, GTK, linux_base, glib (three versions of it), sound and multimedia libraries like esound, video decoders, and LAME, build tools like gmake, imake, expat, autoconf, and automake, and languages including perl, python, tk/tcl, and java. It's a really great example of desktop-use induced system bloat. I did a make install for 19 ports, yet there are 122 installed. My servers don't have anywhere near that kind of dependancy ratio. It's not surprising other OSes destabilize over time as users install, use, upgrade and remove software that included support libraries. It also shows how critical it is to not rely solely on the installer provided with the software. I wasn't able to boot for a while (read: I was too impatient to read that I had to run fsck MANUALLY in single user mode). It also appeared that my cleaning-action afterwards (get rid of all that Gnome-stuff my disk) did something else than what I had in mind (but I guess it did exactly what I asked for...) Anyhow, I reinstalled almost everything, screwed around with xdm the wrong way (had something to do with a half-installed edition of gdm I guess) wich prevented me from logging in for a few days (after that I discovered Ctrl-Alt-F1). I ended up with the new versions of XFce and Gaim. That is where the frustration began (yes, not until there...): I need (don't ask why) a consisting looking desktop: all programs I use should use the same toolkit, so that everywhere my scrollbars and buttons look exactly the same. This is nearly impossible, so I could live with some qt-based programs (but always looking for gtk-based replacements). But: XFce uses GTK+ 1; Gaim uses GTK+ 2. I cannot find any details about how to change themes for GTK on the net (checked some major sites), I don't have the usefull tools Gnome can provide, the XFce-themechooser doesn't work (the builder of XFce doesn't know why) and that would only be sufficient for all the GTK+ 1-based programs (this is where gtk-theme-switch comes in handy). I like the theme XFce has given to all the GTK+ 1-based programs, but the theme Gaim is using now is UGLY. I managed to addept the colors by installing gtk-xfce-engine (wich wasn't so hard :) ) I don't want to know how to change the themes from you all, but my question in general is: why does it appear so hard to find any good documentation about GTK+? Normally I can find my way around fairly easily, but I'm almost stuck now! Can't find man-pages, can't find docs on the net covering this issue... is there something wrong with me? PS: as you've might have seen between the lines: I now use gtk-theme-switch for GTK1. There is a version of this program for GTK2, but there is no FreeBSD-port yet... I have a P100 laptop I use for writing and some times some Nintendo emulation. I tried loading Red Hat 9 on it, stripping it down of course... But it wouldn't even let me do that. Just flat out said no way, your system sucks. Where I work there's a group of people some of us call the Cult of Gentoo. While one of them is just doing it to fit in (the guy can hardly tech Windows, which is our job), they all talk about about Gentoo's ease of use compared to the other distros and other *NIX kernels, their arguements inevitably lead to Gentoo's "emerge" function. I keep telling them that FreeBSD has two very similar systems of installing programs, and it does it about the same, downloading dependencies automatically. Not too sure if Gentoo patches itself either. Not to mention I didn't have to go through some huge set-up to get FreeBSD running AND FreeBSD actually detected my NIC, which Gentoo didn't. Another guy at work and I are just getting into FreeBSD and already we've had less issues than the guys that have been running Gentoo since they first put it out. One of these days I'm gonna log into "The Cult's" computers and change their desktop wallpapers to BSD centric images. Viva La Revolution! :P -B P.S. I know there may still be some linux ethusists out there on this list, this is nothing against you or Linux, it's against just some of the kernel's followers. I'm sure there are some who can argue this better than they can and beat me, but eh... I'm only defending my kernel of choice from the uninformed. After all, despite "The Cult's" presence, I still take all the Linux calls. Since you probably do have an error in there somewhere, I'll also point out that httpd.conf has a format different from most other config files. (Lines following comment lines are counted as comment lines. see the notes in the file for more info.) As a side note, the only thing I had to change was the 'document root' and it was good to go. We are finding a person who is represent new diagnostic device in the region. The device is based on the theory of Oriental medicine and it is named as PAS - [cid:x97aimage_0.jpg] A new processing principle of Pulse waves on the PC is using by the PAS. The developer has found this principle after 14 years of researches On the Five Elements diagrams that are worked out by the PAS you could see the conditions of the elements (in accordance with TCM) and their activity too. Such diagram is a direct order what to do. For example: 1. To chose the diet (in accordance with Ayrveda), 2. To massage by the any method using active points on the body, 3. To use acupuncture properly. There are many applications in researching herbology, homeopathy and so on. Such wide application of the device demands a well-organized network of distributors and we are ready to support our distributors. OUR discounts reach up to 90%!!! If the dealer sells more than 2000 registration, he/she can have such huge discount (but in one region can be only one such dealer). You can test the PAS and we will return the money if the device is not suitable for you (You pay only delivery fees). Why we think the PAS is useful for many people? It is well known fact that skilled pulse doctor works for many years before he will reach the art of diagnosis. The PAS allows be almost the same professor in three or five weeks. It is revolution of penetration of ancient knowledge to our days. Now many people can receive the correct and fast diagnosis at early stages of illness. We are proud that we do a very useful thing and we are sure, in the nearest future many people will use the PAS. And we are very interested in equal in rights partnership in your region. Please ask the details right now via e-mail [1]tigertel@stl.ru. We will answer in a very short time. No problems with install or booting with grub (multi-boot machine). 1. At least my nic (tulip compatible) was recognized, DHCP and network services working (PING by name works). 2. My plain-ole-PS2 Logitech 3-button mouse won't work under X. The boot messages indicate that it was recognized as a PS2 mouse, and the mouse daemon works just fine. 3. I could give you the answer, but this is -newbies, where I am not supposed to. However this topic is covered in some detail in the Handbook. The answer was also briefly given to you during the install when you set up the mouse daemon, if you looked hard enough (I missed it myself the first couple of times). Hint: sysmouse. > 3. My sound card(SB 16) is not recognized. Not recognized or not working? Big difference. Redirect the question to -questions, where they know a lot more stuff. It is also available at http://people.freebsd.org/~sue/newbies/fak.html FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. It is particularly important to send all installation questions and answers to FreeBSD-Questions so that they only appear in one place. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for FreeBSD help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. We can help people to use the FreeBSD mailing lists and resources, or to interact more productively with the broader FreeBSD community. These are not support questions, and not technical, so we deal with them here. Everyone can help with these new user orientation requests. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ Mailing list membership To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Use the easy form at http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-newbies to subscribe to the FreeBSD-Newbies mailing list, or to change your subscription details if you are already a member.
