This isn't noticeable unless you have separate DHCP, TFTP and NFS servers. If your setup is like this: DHCP server: IP address d.d.d.d TFTP server: IP address t.t.t.t NFS server: IP address n.n.n.n and the netbooting client has this entry in dhcpd.conf: host hostname.example.com { [...] next-server t.t.t.t; filename "loader"; option root-path "n.n.n.n:/export/install"; } this is what happens: 1. boot net:dhcp OBP broadcasts for DHCP, gets an answer (from d.d.d.d) containing the name of the file to load, and the server to load it from (t.t.t.t). So far, so good. 2. OBP loads "loader" via tftp from t.t.t.t (or from d.d.d.d, if the DHCP response doesn't contain "next-server"). So far, so good. 3. Loader tries to load kernel/loader.rc/etc. as told by "option root-path", by NFS mounting "/export/install" from t.t.t.t. (Correct behaviour would be to mount the file system from n.n.n.n). So the problem is that the 5.1-RELEASE loader tries to load the kernel via NFS from the "next-server" server, not the one specified in "option root-path". This is what I see: FreeBSD/sparc64 bootstrap loader, Revision 1.0 (root@sparkle.attlabs.net, Thu Jun 5 00:18:44 GMT 2003) bootpath="/pci@1f,0/ethernet@c:dhcp" boot: ethernet address: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx net_open: server addr: t.t.t.t net_open: server path: /export/install while this is what I'm expecting: [...] net_open: server addr: n.n.n.n net_open: server path: /export/install PXE-booting an i386 computer used to have the same problem, but that was fixed in rev. 1.17 of /sys/boot/i386/libi386/pxe.c (PR 21743). -- Per Kristian Hove Dept. of Mathematical Sciences Norwegian University of Science and Technology From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Sep 24 11:36:05 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5158A16A4B3 for ; Wed, 24 Sep 2003 11:36:05 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mail.fuqn.ca (mail.fuqn.ca [66.48.23.182]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9991E44001 for ; Wed, 24 Sep 2003 11:36:03 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from jtregunna@mail.fuqn.ca) Received: from mail.fuqn.ca (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mail.fuqn.ca (8.12.9/8.11.6) with ESMTP id h8OIa1cl025586 for ; Wed, 24 Sep 2003 14:36:01 -0400 (EDT) Received: (from jtregunna@localhost) by mail.fuqn.ca (8.12.9/8.12.9/Submit) id h8OIa1Qf025585 for freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org; Wed, 24 Sep 2003 14:36:01 -0400 (EDT) Date: Wed, 24 Sep 2003 14:36:01 -0400 From: jtregunna@fuqn.ca To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20030924183600.GA25450@fuqn.ca> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i Subject: Booting from ISP on U2 X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 24 Sep 2003 18:36:05 -0000 I'm trying to get FreeBSD to boot from a disk that is connected to the onboard fas scsi controller, but through the QLogic ISP1000 SBus card in this system. Is this even possible? I've seen other posts about this but have not been able to find out exactly how to do it. I've tried booting using: boot /sbus@1f,0/QLGC,isp@3,10000/sd@0,0 and also tried with a :a appended to the end of that. I get Can't open boot device each time I try and boot. There is an installed system on there, it is not yet FreeBSD, but I want to make sure I can boot from the ISP before installing. I'd like to get to installing today. When was the last time you did a buildworld, before your recent attempts? In your /root/current-supfile file, what value do you have for 'tag='? The last time I did a buildworld on Sparc was on Sept 18th, and I didn't have any trouble with it. It might be helpful to do a: rm -Rf /usr/obj/usr/src/* before trying to do a buildworld. It might be that you have some old cruft lying around from a previous build, and this new build is getting confused. -- Garance Alistair Drosehn = gad@gilead.netel.rpi.edu Senior Systems Programmer or gad@freebsd.org Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute or drosih@rpi.edu From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Sep 25 10:29:00 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8FBF316A4B3 for ; Thu, 25 Sep 2003 10:29:00 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ms-smtp-01.southeast.rr.com (ms-smtp-01.southeast.rr.com [24.93.67.82]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3A30B44011 for ; Thu, 25 Sep 2003 10:28:59 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from jason@monsterjam.org) Received: from monsterjam.org (cpe-024-211-161-206.nc.rr.com [24.211.161.206]) h8PHLR0Q021632 for ; Thu, 25 Sep 2003 13:21:28 -0400 (EDT) Received: (qmail 73261 invoked by uid 85); 25 Sep 2003 17:28:57 -0000 Received: from jason@monsterjam.org by beast by uid 82 with qmail-scanner-1.14 (clamscan: 0.54. I have 5.0-RELEASE installed on my sparcengine ultra AXe. I haven't messed with it in months and was going to try and upgrade it to something more recent. First I tried a make buildworld with CURRENT sources from a couple days ago (9-23 or 9-22, I don't remember), but I got some errors. I could have missed something in UPDATING, I don't really know. In any case, I decided to reinstall with UFS2 and just in general get a fresh start since it's been so long since I messed with this machine. The 5.1 cd gets to mounting root from /dev/md0 and hangs. There was a thread about this same problem on an ultra 10 some months ago, but it was never resolved afaik and turned into an argument about blocking entire dsl subnets to stop spam :) Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions for getting 5.1 or -current on my sparc? I'm using an LSI logic SCSI card and the cdrom is a an external plextor that does boot the 5.0 disc just fine (I checked again last night). To successfully install a 5.1-REL on a IDE disk I had to stop boot when it counts from 10 to 1 before loader executes boot and do a set hw.ata.ata_dma=0 and then continue boot with boot After installation you most likely will have to write hw.ata.ata_dma=0 to your /boot/loader.conf.local But it didn't always help. a pkg_add -r for X clients panic()ed the machine anyway :( I also did a cross build for HEAD for sparc64 because there is a patch commited about this panic: pcib: PCI bus A error AFAR 0x1fe020003f8 AFSR 0x100000000 I think but I couldn't boot the ISOs after I finished a make release cycle (had to patch some parts of make release around /dev/md). Always said 'Not ufs'. I would also like to find a better solution for this to get the machine stable so any suggestions are welcome though I will most likely not be able to test anything the next three weeks. -- Greetings Bjoern A. Also, dd'ing the boot.flp to the front of a hard drive produces the same results: The system hangs on 5.1-RELEASE with no useful messages when "Mounting root from UFS:/dev/md0" Again, the 5.0-RELEASE cd works. Suggestions? Thanks in advance. -p On Thursday, September 25, 2003, at 10:57 AM, peter@larkowski.net wrote: > Hi everyone. > > I have 5.0-RELEASE installed on my sparcengine ultra AXe. I try to connect via cu from a FreeBSD box but i don't know exactly when to send the BREAK command (via ~# or ~%break) in order to get into the PROM to boot from the FreeBSD cdrom to install it. As I know, some of you have completed this before, maybe i am not lucky with sending the BREAK command or my console cable should be broken. Thanks -- Cordialement, Xiloc Networks mailto:tech@xiloc.net Post-Joint : .
