I've also done a few more cvsups, and re-built cvsup itself, so that I'm now running the "h" revision. A possible clue: cvsup has not detected or made ANY changes since saturday. Usually there are a few commits per day. I recognise that many folk might be on holidays at the moment, but perhaps that's an indication that there's something wrong with my /usr/src archive? I've tried cvsupping against cvsup3.au.freebsd.org, cvsup.au.freebsd.org and cvsup.freebsd.org, all with the same (null) result. I've even changed my mount structure, so that my big vinum striped partition that was /usr_plus is now union mounted over /usr, so that all paths have their canonical names. The build still breaks in groff, specifically in the mkdep, with all of the headers in /usr/src/contrib/groff/src/include declared missing. As my previous setup was a machine regularly upgraded (OS via make world, ports with portupgrade), some obsolete includes or libraries may be the cause for the crashes. This can be a security risk if untrusted users have access to the system. Use 'd' to delete the old /var/tmp/temproot and continue Use 't' to select a new temporary root directory Use 'e' to exit mergemaster Default is to use /var/tmp/temproot as is How should I deal with this? [Use the existing /var/tmp/temproot] ============================================== Should I "d" the old temproot or should I just hit "Enter"? Second thing, when I actually merging files, what I do is I hit "v" - variously include common lines and then I hit "m" to merge, primarily using "r" right side. By "verbosely include common lines" I only "Guess" that the mergemaster will include everything common from both files and then by using "r" switch I'm adding everything "fresh" from the new files (the files I just cvsuped), then I hit "q" to get out and then I hit "i" to install merged file. I do not need to edit any of my files during update, I just need to save what I have and add enw stuff. If you see my logic, please let me know if it's correct. [Use the existing /var/tmp/temproot] > ============================================== > Should I "d" the old temproot or should I just hit "Enter"? Depends on how you got here. I'm assuming that the last time you did mergemaster you didn't delete /var/tmp/temproot when you were done. If that is the case, you're probably safest to delete it now, before continuing. If you're not sure, I would recommend "mv /var/tmp/temproot /var/tmp/temproot.old" and then run mergemaster. If everything works OK, you should delete /var/tmp/temproot.old. > Second thing, when I actually merging files, what I do is I hit "v" - > variously include common lines and then I hit "m" to merge, primarily > using "r" right side. > By "verbosely include common lines" I only "Guess" that the mergemaster > will include everything common from both files and then by using "r" > switch I'm adding everything "fresh" from the new files (the files I > just cvsuped), then I hit "q" to get out and then I hit "i" to install > merged file. > I do not need to edit any of my files during update, I just need to save > what I have and add enw stuff. > > If you see my logic, please let me know if it's correct. First: Always backup /etc before running mergemaster Second: Each file is different. If you're sure you've never altered the file in question, just install the new one (/etc/defaults should be like this, for example) If you've changed the file you can either keep the old one (/etc/printcap is an example of a file that I usually keep the old version) or merge. I'm not 100% sure I understand the way you describe, but if you back up /etc before starting (I just 'cp -Rp /etc /etc.old') you can always back out of a mistake. -- Bill Moran Potential Technologies http://www.potentialtech.com From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Apr 20 13:21:39 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 21EBE37B401 for ; Sun, 20 Apr 2003 13:21:39 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mx1.lphp.org (APastourelles-107-1-9-216.abo.wanadoo.fr [80.13.163.216]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6B5CD43F75 for ; Sun, 20 Apr 2003 13:21:37 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from ajacoutot@lphp.org) Received: from compaq (lyon-1-a7-62-147-19-77.dial.proxad.net [62.147.19.77]) by mx1.lphp.org (8.12.8p1/8.12.8) with SMTP id h3KKLTuv040416; Sun, 20 Apr 2003 22:21:32 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from ajacoutot@lphp.org) Message-ID: <000101c3077a$6f4bf7c0$4d13933e@compaq> From: "Antoine Jacoutot" To: "Bri" , References: <200304192224.40661.brian.hood@blueyonder.co.uk> Date: Sun, 20 Apr 2003 08:16:13 +0200 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1106 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1106 Subject: Re: Core dumps in KDE 3.1 something do with libc_r X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 20 Apr 2003 20:21:39 -0000 > Not everytime but most times when I close a program I get the application box > and in the backtrace box the error is always the same. Also, I don't recommend merging every file. The merge option is there for files that you've edited on that system, so that you can easily preserve the local edits. If you haven't edited the file, you should just [i]nstall it. This will be much less confusing for you. Finally, I'm not sure that the v option to sdiff (include common lines) is a good idea either. mergemaster runs sdiff with the suppress common lines option because it's a lot less confusing. What I generally do with a confusing merge is to use 'eb' which means "edit both" in your favorite editor, usually vi. One thing I've also found helpful is to include a comment on the line above anything I add to tell me what I did, and why. I recommend that you back up what you've got, read the man page, and then do 'mergemaster -s' to make sure that you've not missed something in a previous run. As a result I set up a script to back up my old /etc to some subdir by date and time and run that through the mergemaster option to run something before it. I thought this was clever, but I now see this isn't good enough. I do not want to get an archive, in addition to normal backups, of a complete 10 MB /etc directory each time I upgrade. So here is the feature request: Is it possible to have a new option in mergemaster: -b (path) Make a backup of every file that mergemaster overwrites, whether on user input or automatically. Mergemaster writes the files in a directory with a timestamp name (YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS) under the path indicated. This would give us an archive of the config changes on the machine. I do not have enough scripting to squeeze this into mergemaster myself. Nothing near it. No need, because I did indeed have CXXFLAGS defined (an unsuccessful attempt to get a port to compile with debugging flags). Thanks for pointing that out! With CXXFLAGS removed, everything is happily building again now. If CXXFLAGS isn't it, is there any other equivalent to CFLAGS, that gets used for C++ compilations, or is CFLAGS used to build C++ flags on too? Mine is only 1.3 megs, and that's just because I'm a bit sloppy about having extra rcNG stuff lying around. > So here is the feature request: Is it possible to have a new option in > mergemaster: > > -b (path) Make a backup of every file that mergemaster > overwrites, whether on user input or automatically. > Mergemaster writes the files in a directory with a > timestamp name (YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS) under the path > indicated. > > This would give us an archive of the config changes on the machine. Very interesting idea. Try the attached patch and let me know what you think. I used -P for "preserve," because I like the semantics better. It runs fine and stable all the time, except when I download the filesystem-dumps to my other machine where the tape is attached. Then after an hour or two of downloading (slow old tape) the kernel panics from rsh. The kernel debugger then always shows the following stacktrace: m_copym, tcp_output, tcp_usr_send, sosend, soo_write, dofilewrite, write, syscall2. I tried to activate INVARIANTS to see what might go wrong in m_copym(), but that doesnt work: the kernel would not even boot, but panics when attaching the devices. So I did activate INVARIANT_SUPPORT only, and defined INVARIANTS only in kern/uipc_mbuf.c (where m_copym() dwells). Now again I get the panics in the expected situation, beforehand there is a message "panic: freeing free mbuf", but the stacktrace is now totally different (and much longer), and the system cannot write a dump: it waits a while, then reports that it cannot synchronize the cache, tries to dump, then reports i/o error. I have currently no clue on how to investigate further. Ideas are welcome. rgds, Peter From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Apr 20 18:05:28 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 10BB637B401 for ; Sun, 20 Apr 2003 18:05:28 -0700 (PDT) Received: from makon.ru (makon.ru [212.0.64.198]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2D21B43F85 for ; Sun, 20 Apr 2003 18:04:06 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from alchie@makon.ru) Received: from unix.makon (alchie@unix.makon [192.168.10.100]) by makon.ru (8.12.9/8.12.9) with SMTP id h3L13xaa029703 for ; Mon, 21 Apr 2003 10:03:59 +0900 (IRKST) (envelope-from alchie@makon.ru) Date: Mon, 21 Apr 2003 10:03:58 +0900 From: Alexey Kuzmin To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Message-Id: <20030421100358.1487427a.alchie@makon.ru> In-Reply-To: <20030418094032.GB96135@rot13.obsecurity.org> References: <20030418162507.10856e44.alchie@makon.ru> <20030418094032.GB96135@rot13.obsecurity.org> Organization: ESC MAKON X-Mailer: Sylpheed version 0.8.9claws (GTK+ 1.2.10; i386-portbld-freebsd4.7) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: Re: USE_GCC=3.2 vs make clean in ports X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 21 Apr 2003 01:05:28 -0000 On Fri, 18 Apr 2003 02:40:32 -0700 Kris Kennaway wrote: > On Fri, Apr 18, 2003 at 04:25:07PM +0900, Alexey Kuzmin wrote: > > hello all! > > > > i've installed gcc-3.2 about a month ago and put "USE_GCC=3.2" into > > /etc/make.conf. > > now "make clean" for any of ports leads to smth like > > Yes, don't do that :) USE_GCC adds a dependency on gcc32 for every > port, including gcc32. you mean `make clean' falls into infinite loop? > > I assume that what you're trying to do is make ports build with gcc32; > that's what the CC and CXX environment variables are intended for. i've just replaced USE_GCC with CC/CXX and it seems to be ok now thanx a lot. -- Alexey Kuzmin, alchie@alchie.org Enterprise Support alchie@makon.ru Center "Makon" From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Apr 20 18:35:22 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AD77437B401 for ; Sun, 20 Apr 2003 18:35:22 -0700 (PDT) Received: from smtp806.mail.sc5.yahoo.com (smtp806.mail.sc5.yahoo.com [66.163.168.185]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id B286C44005 for ; Sun, 20 Apr 2003 18:34:01 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from antonzav@pacbell.net) Received: from adsl-64-172-96-108.dsl.snfc21.pacbell.net (HELO travel) (antonzav@pacbell.net@64.172.96.108 with login) by smtp-sbc-v1.mail.vip.sc5.yahoo.com with SMTP; 21 Apr 2003 01:34:01 -0000 From: "Anton Zavrin" To: "'Doug Barton'" , "'Marc Schneiders'" Date: Sun, 20 Apr 2003 18:32:54 -0700 Message-ID: <006701c307a5$ee7948b0$0200a8c0@travel> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook, Build 10.0.2627 In-Reply-To: <20030420161118.P631@znfgre.tberna.bet> X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4920.2300 Importance: Normal cc: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Subject: RE: Mergemaster Request (RE: mergemaster tips) X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 21 Apr 2003 01:35:23 -0000 Well, I'm a newbie and started to use mergemaster more/less seriously 2 unsuccessful buildworld times ago, actually buildworlds were successful, it's just after I ran mergemaster and rebooted something went wrong, but it's all good, I just finished my 3rd buildworld and everything seems to be working (even after mergemaster), I still feel like there is something I missed, you know this weird feeling ;-). Anyways, as for the man pages, my biggest problems were not deep enough explanations for each switch, may be because I'm a newbie. What are those: CVS $Id's? Last time I was using mergemaster I got many files with the same CVS $Id's and they were deleted or something. Another thing is that (I feel stupid now) when I ran mergemaster for the first time, I didn't know that when I use "r" or "l" I am given only one raw from both files to compare and after I picked what side I wanna use, I hit "q" and "i' to install, instead of just keep going with comparison of each raw for each file (old/new) Need a better explanation of such little things like: "!", "---", "+++", etc. I think I was wrong about saying that man pages are not good, what I meant is that would be great to have a help page/FAQ with real life examples of how to use mergemaster, entire process. mergemaster is an advanced tool for an advanced users and wasn't meant for newbies, so I can't argue here. Also that would be great if there was a utility/script that would do the following automatically: 1. Copy (not replace) new files that are not installed in the system yet (mergemaster already has such switch) 2. Go into "conf" (pre-specified list of such files that can be edited by a user) files to see what new functions/switches are missing and add (in a commented form)those functions/switches automatically without replacing old ones. That would save a lot of time during mergemaster process and after everything is done, before re-boot, a user can go into those files (pre- specified list) and quickly uncomment those lines he/she needs/wants to use; this is a more visual process and easier understandable. 3. Replace old binaries with new Sorry, if I'm not expressing myself in a more clear way, I'm just sort of frustrated, but the more I use it, the more I learn (may be in hard way) the less problems I have. May be someday when I know everything I will create a step-by-step guide with examples ;-) Anyway, thank you for your help!!! Every little bit helped a lot! The goal of mergemaster is to take into account new elements of configuration files while trying to keep your local modifications. If/when mergemaster detects the CVS $Id$ has not changed, it means the file in the FreeBSD tree has not changed, so it will not bother trying to update the file, even if it is not the same as in the sources. > Need a better explanation of such little things like: "!", "---", "+++", > etc. You need to be a little more familiar with patch(1) and diff(1), they can help you even if you don't do development. > I think I was wrong about saying that man pages are not good, what I > meant is that would be great to have a help page/FAQ with real life > examples of how to use mergemaster, entire process. What I usually use was taken from Usenet: - "mergemaster -svia" to do the automatic part (the files that will be upgraded without your consideration) - "mergemaster -vr" to do the actual merging on the remaining files. You should review the man page to understand each option. What I usually add between both commands is "PAGER=less" because I prefer less to more to view the diffs. -- olive From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Apr 21 03:49:50 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0254137B401; Mon, 21 Apr 2003 03:49:50 -0700 (PDT) Received: from snark.ratmir.ru (snark.ratmir.ru [213.24.248.177]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8948943F85; Mon, 21 Apr 2003 03:49:48 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from freebsd@snark.ratmir.ru) Received: from snark.ratmir.ru (freebsd@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by snark.ratmir.ru (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id h3LAnkC2077910; Mon, 21 Apr 2003 14:49:46 +0400 (MSD) (envelope-from freebsd@snark.ratmir.ru) Received: (from freebsd@localhost) by snark.ratmir.ru (8.12.9/8.12.9/Submit) id h3LAnkAG077909; Mon, 21 Apr 2003 14:49:46 +0400 (MSD) Date: Mon, 21 Apr 2003 14:49:46 +0400 From: Alex Semenyaka To: Doug Barton Message-ID: <20030421104946.GA77853@snark.ratmir.ru> References: <20030419062121.GA70121@snark.ratmir.ru> <20030420140851.H631@znfgre.tberna.bet> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20030420140851.H631@znfgre.tberna.bet> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.4i cc: freebsd-hackers@freebsd.org cc: freebsd-gnats-submit@freebsd.org cc: Alex Semenyaka cc: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Subject: Re: bin/51148 Slow vipw and fast pwd_mkdb X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 21 Apr 2003 10:49:50 -0000 Hi, On Sun, Apr 20, 2003 at 02:11:34PM -0700, Doug Barton wrote: > Having been in a "mondo huge master.passwd file" situation myself, my > comment is that people in this situation should probably not be relying on > tools like vipw to manage their stuff. Actually, there is a such corporative policy in the ISP I've taken that huge master.passwd for the test. The main ideas: 1) no automatic changes in the master.passwd 2) time to time visual check and fix of users' data in master.passwd (heh, column from 'master.passwd's). Try /usr/bin/more --help for a quick confirmation. ______________________________________________________________________ Darren Henderson darren@nighttide.net Help fight junk e-mail, visit http://www.cauce.org/ From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Apr 21 09:01:28 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 21E0737B401 for ; Mon, 21 Apr 2003 09:01:28 -0700 (PDT) Received: from dns1.vizion2000.net (dns1.vizion2000.net [64.58.171.82]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4F3C843FE5 for ; Mon, 21 Apr 2003 09:01:27 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from vizion@ixpres.com) Received: from vizion (vizion.vizion2000.net [64.58.171.92]) by dns1.vizion2000.net (8.11.6/8.11.6) with SMTP id h3LGTVY14991 for ; Mon, 21 Apr 2003 09:29:31 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from vizion@ixpres.com) Message-ID: <009801c3081b$4d557050$15b55042@vizion2000.net> From: "vizion communication" To: "FreeBSD Stable" Date: Mon, 21 Apr 2003 08:33:04 -0700 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1106 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1106 Subject: Health check X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 21 Apr 2003 16:01:28 -0000 Hi I have a quad processor Compaq Proliant 5500. The output from dmesg seems strange (I have also sent a copy to freebsd-smp to ask about smp issues) and there are also some performance issues which I suspect are smp related. Could anyone who fels so inclined please take a look at the output and let me have any comments. Thanks _______________________________ Copyright (c) 1992-2002 The FreeBSD Project.
