One of the reasons was my PR kern/68623, the other reason is the PC164 needing the driver to use DMA burst sizes > 0 (i think size 0 means no burst). So, after implementing the code lines to set this DMA burst, i would like to optimize performance here. AFAIK, the optimal DMA burst size depends on the capabilities of the PCI-Host brige. If this is true, does someone have information about the different chipsets used on Alpha systems? Currently, i'm especially interested in Alcor and Apecs chipsets, as i have platforms using those chips here to test it. I'll release the final driver patches as soon as i have tested everything on i386 and maybe sparc64 also to avoid platform incompatibilities. ...Michael From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jul 5 11:01:49 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E654516A4D4 for ; Mon, 5 Jul 2004 11:01:49 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DDD4C43D2D for ; Mon, 5 Jul 2004 11:01:49 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (peter@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id i65B1nGR055507 for ; Mon, 5 Jul 2004 11:01:49 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: (from peter@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id i65B1nAY055501 for freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org; Mon, 5 Jul 2004 11:01:49 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Date: Mon, 5 Jul 2004 11:01:49 GMT Message-Id: <200407051101.i65B1nAY055501@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: peter set sender to owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.org Subject: Current problem reports assigned to you X-BeenThere: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Alpha List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 05 Jul 2004 11:01:50 -0000 Current FreeBSD problem reports Critical problems S Submitted Tracker Resp. I haven't had time to play the 'find-which-commit-breaks-it' game yet. My guess is that this is not Alpha specific but that's just a guess, the amd64 ref machine in the cluster has been pretty fragile the past few days as well though it usually just locks up solid with nothing useful on the console. Both are dual processor machines. I had built a kernel for Alpha last night to test something for someone so Robert's commit yesterday backing off some aspects of the scheduler doesn't appear to have been the problem causing this. -- Ken Smith - From there to here, from here to | kensmith@cse.buffalo.edu there, funny things are everywhere. | - Theodore Geisel | From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jul 8 14:54:10 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2580616A4CF; Thu, 8 Jul 2004 14:54:10 +0000 (GMT) Received: from duke.cs.duke.edu (duke.cs.duke.edu [152.3.140.1]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AF5B543D55; Thu, 8 Jul 2004 14:54:09 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gallatin@cs.duke.edu) Received: from grasshopper.cs.duke.edu (grasshopper.cs.duke.edu [152.3.145.30]) by duke.cs.duke.edu (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id i68Es8qM004493 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO); Thu, 8 Jul 2004 10:54:08 -0400 (EDT) Received: (from gallatin@localhost) by grasshopper.cs.duke.edu (8.12.9p2/8.12.9/Submit) id i68Es3GB020597; Thu, 8 Jul 2004 10:54:03 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from gallatin) From: Andrew Gallatin MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-ID: <16621.24587.229940.823746@grasshopper.cs.duke.edu> Date: Thu, 8 Jul 2004 10:54:03 -0400 (EDT) To: Ken Smith In-Reply-To: <20040708135441.GD15096@electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU> References: <20040708135441.GD15096@electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU> X-Mailer: VM 6.75 under 21.1 (patch 12) "Channel Islands" XEmacs Lucid cc: freebsd-current@freebsd.org cc: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Alpha problems (though maybe not just Alpha...) It usually locks up solid right after printing > this on the console: > > panic() at panic+0x200 > _mtx_assert() at _mtx_assert+0xb4 > vrele() at vr 16 32 48 64 80 A mutex assert failed in vrele(). The first one that comes to mind is the GIANT_REQUIRED; right at the top. Its really too bad that we don't have the rest of the stack. The remainder of the output is quite strange.. It almost looks like it has stopped printing the stack trace and started taking a dump, and then panic'ed taking the dump (ahc intr might support that): > fatal kernel trap: > > trap entry = 0x2 (memory management fault) > cpuid = 0 > faulting va = 0x0 > type = access violation > cause = instruction fetch > pc = 0x0 > ra = 0x0 > sp = 0xfffffe00317bfc70 > curthread = 0xfffffc007d772000 > pid = 23, comm = intr: ahc1 > > spin lock sched lock held by 0xfffffc007d772000 for > 5 seconds A va and ra of 0 means that it followed a null function pointer, or the stack got corrupted and it tried to return to the wrong place... Can you try disabling dumps, and disabling kern.sync_on_panic and see if you can get a decent stack trace? I was looking to install a dual port card. I found that the dual port Intel PRO/1000MT might fit. But there are two things I wanted to check first; The dual port Intel PRO/1000MT is, according to Intel's tech. specs., based on the 82546 controller chip. The hardware notes says the em(4) driver supports the 82546EB, but the manual pages for the em driver says just 82546. What's the significance of 'EB' postfix in the hardware notes? Also, just to verify that I'm reading the hardware notes right, it says the em(4) driver is supported by Intel, but only on i386. I read this as meaning that the driver works on Alpha, but I can't call Intel for support.
