Down load the amd64 install CD from > ftp.freebsd.org and do a normal install to get a 64-bit machine > running. If anybody is up for an adventure, this is how I used to do it. No, I will not give specific details. If you need to ask for a step-by-step, then you're already way out of your depth. :) What I did, was build a 64 bit kernel, and cross build a userland. I'd steal a spare partition (I used the swap partition and changed it from swap to 4.2bsd for the purpose back then), newfs/mount it as /mnt, and do a destdir install into /mnt. Then, boot the 64 bit kernel, with a vfs.root.mountfrom=ufs:/dev/ad0s1b, and then either mount the original obj/src stuff stuff and install it into the real root, or copy the files over. I usually cheated and copied the files. :-) Then, reboot and do a real 'make world' to finish off any loose ends. And dont forget to turn the ad0s1b partition back into swap. These days I just install from a CD or from a pxeboot/nfsroot environment. It's a lot less hassle. But, if you're doing it for fun and know how to dig yourself out of deep sh!t if you make a mistake, its worth doing once. But only if its for fun. And no, a 64 bit kernel will not happily boot a 32 bit userland. I haven't tried it for ages, but I know there are problems with the mount(2) interface, sysctl(2), and so on. The 32 bit ABI stuff is limited to syscalls that applications were likely to run into. I never got around to even trying the things needed for things like running a full 32 bit OS. This doesn't mean that it can't be done, just that I never got around to it. nmount(2) should help, but things like mount_nfs ABI are just evil. And a sysctl wrapper needs to be done. -- Peter Wemm - peter@wemm.org; peter@FreeBSD.org; peter@yahoo-inc.com "All of this is for nothing if we don't go to the stars" - JMS/B5 From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jul 21 02:48:13 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 73FE116A4CE for ; Wed, 21 Jul 2004 02:48:13 +0000 (GMT) Received: from web50605.mail.yahoo.com (web50605.mail.yahoo.com [206.190.38.92]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 068C643D46 for ; Wed, 21 Jul 2004 02:48:13 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from kstailey@yahoo.com) Message-ID: <20040721024812.89751.qmail@web50605.mail.yahoo.com> Received: from [69.138.247.171] by web50605.mail.yahoo.com via HTTP; Tue, 20 Jul 2004 19:48:12 PDT Date: Tue, 20 Jul 2004 19:48:12 -0700 (PDT) From: Kenneth Stailey To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Subject: anybody try a Newisys box? But the system is based on a tyan 2882 mobo, with the IPMI card. We have the 2882 mobo working with the IPMI card using consolue redirect. Full functionality of the IPMI can be achieved by deploying a windows box in the same LAN as the IPMI enabled servers, you can then connect to the controller and manage the servers. We prefer the serial option, as this still gives you BIOS level remote control, and boot -restart visability from the worse case "system freeze" (which we have never had.) The 2882's sent out by tyan do require a BIOS upgrade to V2nnn and above to work properly with RAID cards and an IPMI properly. yours a.r.b. I can't yet afford an AMD64 System, and I am in need of a shell account. Over the past year and half or so, I have written 2 assembly tutorials for FreeBSD. Although (in my mind), the're not very well written (could use some editing). However they have been very well recieved, and appreciated. I am in the process of writing the 3rd part to these FreeBSD Assembly Tutorials. Most of part 1 & 2 focused on the x86 arch, and now part 3 will be more focused on 64 bit platforms. I have a sparc64 running freebsd, and I would like to do a little work on the AMD64 to put that in there as well. Is there any chance at all that one of you who has an AMD64 machine running FreeBSD could give me a shell account?? If so, please let me know off list. On this list, there is a fair chance that the answer to every windows question is "install a different OS instead". It certainly isn't the appropriate place to ask for help installing windows on such a machine, sorry. The kernel bits are mostly ready, but I've held off committing any major changes to the kernel until the current stability problems are fixed. The patch & more information is available at: http://people.freebsd.org/~tjr/linux32.html ... but unfortunately the patch doesn't apply to recent source trees without a little manual merge-work. Sucks Extremely?), it _appears_ to have problems with the onboard ethernet under heavy load, though noone here has managed to put their finger on it. nForce3-150 has weird problems, but I don't suppose you'll run into those lots any more. You need to run /usr/src/tools/lib32/build32.sh with cwd set to /usr/src to build the 32-bit loader & basic libraries. Kris K does -CURRENT packages, so we don't need to worry about them. For i386, we do 4.10-R, 4-STABLE, and 5.2.1-R as well, just to serve as many folks as possible. Which releases are viable for amd64? 4-X is out; 5.2.1-R is left as a candidate, but is it possible that there might be folks actually running that somewhere? I doubt it, since the lack of cvsup and - february it was - I guess the stack and redzone mess there was then _seem_ to make it a less-than-viable platform. What do you think? (More to the point, if you're running 5.2.1-R and not -CURRENT on amd64, would you want new KDE packages?)
