I try to install mysql40-server, and other things for that matter, and the system complains that the package is for i386 machines. How do I get around this? I've spent hours and finally found this in the archives: You need to run /usr/src/tools/lib32/build32.sh with cwd set to /usr/src to build the 32-bit loader & basic libraries. Is this my answer? After log in in kde, machine hard crashed.. after reset file system was badly damaged, many ufs inconsistences and lost files. KDE files were unusable. Since then i have rebuilt kde base/libs several times (with new world/kernel) and it seems the same.. it hard crashes when starting any kde app, and after reboot file system damage. At the moment im using old kernel (sep 25), and new world (oct 10).. it seems to work ok (at least no crashes). Has anyone experienced this ? PD. On weekend i'll do a clean install (again), and rebuild everything from scratch with -CURRENT, to try to eliminate any possible dependency problems. I'm thinking about purchasing a high-end dual Opteron system to run some heavy duty Java apps requiring a MySQL backend. I wanted the lists suggestions on the speed / stability of Java 1.4.x with Tomcat 5, and MySQL 4. I would really like to run everything natively in 64bit, but judging from the few list archives I have read, it is probably not possible. My 2 main concerns here are the stability and speed of Java and the speed of MySQL. Currently, I have to enable linuxthreads on 4-STABLE in order to get good performance out of MySQL. We have an AMD64 box here, which is being used as a dedicated mysql server for one large site. Server has the following hardware: AMD Athlon64 3400+ 1.5GB RAM 18GB SCSI drive, spinning at 15k RPM Adaptec's SCSI controller That server currently runs FreeBSD 5.3-BETA7-amd64. MySQL is built from ports and linked against libkse. Just for comparison - Before we got that server, we used P4 CPU @ 2.6Ghz, 1GB of RAM and SCSI drive (10k RPM). Usually load was at 2.5-3 during the peak times. Now with this AMD64 box, load does not go any higher than 0.80 during the peak times. I can't comment on SMP-enabled Opterons, but AFAIK, libkse is broken there, and mysql won't utilize both CPUs.. regards, M.
