Note that the following paragraphs are not a statement of the official policy of the FreeBSD Documentation Project, but my personal stance on the matter. IMHO, the fact that someone has a doc commit bit is almost entirely irrelevant to the value of one's suggestions or comments. Agreed, there may be issues regarding which someone who has no commit bit may not have the ``full picture'' -- especially in things regarding the machines of the FreeBSD.org cluster -- but that's pretty much it. Suggestions, comments or even complaints from people who are not committers are as respectful and should be considered as seriously as those that come from members of the team. At least, this is my reading of the following snippet, taken directly from the "Committer's Guide": : Respect other contributors : -------------------------- : : You were not always a committer. At one time you were a : contributor. Remember that at all times. Remember what it was like : trying to get help and attention. Do not forget that your work as a : contributor was very important to you. Remember what it was like. Do : not discourage, belittle, or demean contributors. Treat them with : respect. They are our committers in waiting. They are every bit as : important to the project as committers. Their contributions are as : valid and as important as your own. After all, you made many : contributions before you became a committer. Always remember that. : : Consider the points raised under ``Respect Other Committers'' and : apply them also to contributors. Bearing that in mind, I am always willing to accept and at least give as serious a consideration as possible to comments and/or suggestions from anyone. Regardless of their status as committers or not. So, Pav, if you have patches or even mere comments that may improve the docs, just let me know. The fact that you are not a "doc" committer will not in any way affect the way *I* will consider your proposals. The same goes for anyone else who wants to help with the docs :-) I'm also quite confident that this is how many other doc committers feel too, although I haven't explicitly asked about this. I don't think I need to. The way so many people of diverse ages, nationalities, locations and amounts of spare time have cooperated in the past and still seems to suggest so. Well,, ... 73xxx is still pretty recent :-) Take a look at the current contents of GNATS. Now reflect on the fact that we only rolled over to 50000 in March 2003, 60000 in December 2003, and 70000 in August 2004. Point being, we get _lots_ of PRs :-) and the number is accelerating rapidly. In a more perfect world, we'd get to them a lot faster and the backlog wouldn't build up, but we have a fairly small number of committers for a project of this size. I know it's frustrating to submit PRs and have them sit in GNATS and I've spent quite a bit of my FreeBSD time fiddling with the backlog. All I can do is to encourage you (and others) to keep sending them; to not give up and be patient. Doing things this way is imperfect but noone else has come up with anything better, yet. mcl, with bugmeister hat on From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Nov 14 23:50:49 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 918E316A4D2 for ; Sun, 14 Nov 2004 23:50:49 +0000 (GMT) Received: from ml.free.fr (ml1.proxad.net [213.228.0.43]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E0BBE43D5F for ; Sun, 14 Nov 2004 23:50:48 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from philforyou@free.fr) Received: from ml1 (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by ml.free.fr (Postfix) with ESMTP id C986FC8074 for ; Mon, 15 Nov 2004 00:50:47 +0100 (CET) Received: from ml1 by ml1 (LISTAR/0.42); Mon, 15 Nov 2004 00:50:47 +0100 (CET) Date: Mon, 15 Nov 2004 00:50:47 +0100 (CET) From: Listar To: doc@freebsd.org Message-ID: X-listar-antiloop: ml1 Precedence: list Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Expiry-Date: Tue, 16 Nov 2004 00:50:47 +0100 (CET) Subject: Listar command results: -- Binary/unsupported file stripped by Listar -- X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 14 Nov 2004 23:50:51 -0000 Request received for list 'philforyou' via request address. >> Here is the file. I submitted a PR w/ patch and it's been "ignored" (there > are no replies to it). The patch looks good too. I haven't had a time to dig into the details of installing 5.3 from floppies, since I only use CD-ROM images these days, but a cursory glance reveals no obvious problems apart from a bit of whitespace weirdness (using space only vs. tabs and spaces for indentation). Some times it may be frustrating to see a perfectly fine diff sit in gnats, but please don't get us wrong. If the patch is good (as it looks in this case) it will eventually find its way into CVS. Some times, sending a "ping" to freebsd-doc will draw attention to a good patch sitting in gnats faster than letting people dig it out of gnats and commit it. You may even send personal messages to people you know who are already committers and seem active in the area. Regarding the PR in question, since the patch seemed fine, I just went ahead and committed it a few moments ago. Thanks for the PR submission :-))) From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Nov 15 00:52:29 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7304D16A4CE; Mon, 15 Nov 2004 00:52:29 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4F45043D2F; Mon, 15 Nov 2004 00:52:29 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from keramida@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (keramida@localhost [127.0.0.1]) iAF0qTYC037450; Mon, 15 Nov 2004 00:52:29 GMT (envelope-from keramida@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from keramida@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id iAF0qTtl037446; Mon, 15 Nov 2004 00:52:29 GMT (envelope-from keramida) Date: Mon, 15 Nov 2004 00:52:29 GMT From: Giorgos Keramidas Message-Id: <200411150052.iAF0qTtl037446@freefall.freebsd.org> To: josh@tcbug.org, keramida@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org, keramida@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: docs/73760: [patch] 5.3-RELEASE and possibly older 5.x systems need 3 floppies to boot the installer X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 15 Nov 2004 00:52:29 -0000 Synopsis: [patch] 5.3-RELEASE and possibly older 5.x systems need 3 floppies to boot the installer State-Changed-From-To: open->closed State-Changed-By: keramida State-Changed-When: Mon Nov 15 00:51:59 GMT 2004 State-Changed-Why: Committed, thanks! These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. While it is great that you want to report this issue to the FreeBSD Project - this is the only way we can actually find out what users like and dislike, and the only way we can fix it in the next releases - please note that neither the freebsd-doc list nor the Board of Directors of the FreeBSD Foundation is a suitable place to complain about it. The best person to contact would have been the net/edonkey-gui-gtk port maintainer, Mario Sergio Fujikawa Ferreira , as you have already done; apart from the maintainer, the best, if not to say only, place to report port issues should be the freebsd-ports mailing list. There is absolutely no reason for CC'ing the -doc list, and about CC'ing the FreeBSD Foundation BoD - well, I dunno what to say :) Now, about your complaint, see below... > I could have gotten a realy bad impression about freebsd after=20 > installing the edonkey-gui-gtk-0.6.2_1 port. >=20 > I think it is really not developer's issue WHO runs a programm. >=20 > So may be it may be usefull to give a security advice but not a=20 > stupid message box as yours saying to run with=20 > =20 > --noob-wants-to-run-as-root >=20 > First I thought that FreeBSD's level was real higher and still=20 > believe in this and not in such kind of childish flame comments. >=20 > So please make professional valuable comments but do not offend or=20 > humiliate people.=20 This particular problem - that the GTK interface to edonkey displays a message box when you try to run it as root unless you also specify that command-line option - is not the "fault" of the FreeBSD port in any way :) This is the way the program itself behaves - the ChangeLog in the source tarball says that this was added back in December 2003. If the author of a program has decided that for any reason, security or otherwise, his program should not be run as root, or should be run as root only in special circumstances, it is *not* for the FreeBSD port maintainer to decide to remove that obstacle. The point of the FreeBSD Ports Collection is to take third-party programs and get them to run on FreeBSD, so the users can actually use them; the point is NOT to modify the programs, ignoring the intent of their original author. What we are trying to say, is that isn't part of the FreeBSD software in any way - it is part of the edonkey software. If you downloaded the source, and built it on ANY OS, it would have the same option. You should send your comments to the owners/programmers of edonkey. Once they change their source code, those changes will then be apparant (at some point) in the FreeBSD ports collection. The VIA processors are fully x86 compatible, and are considered 'drop in' replacements for Intel's equivalent parts. Cyrix is long gone, VIA is the parent company that sells them - Centaur Technology (the company I work for) designs them. I'm afraid that's not exactly what I seek. With MLINKS, you can have several manpages being mutual hardlinks. While this saves even more space compared to tiny manpage which contains only `.so man1/foo', I'd like to know why the latter method didn't work for me as expected, just for the reference. I think this belongs in ports(7). Anyway, I actually added info about the DISABLE_VULNERABILITIES knob to my local WIP tree a few weeks ago, I just haven't gotten around to cleaning it up and committing it. And i have the same opinion. Perhaps we can split the security chapter into a security chapter and a firewall chapter? Since the firewall section makes the security chapter huge in my eyes. Any comments on them? my thoughts: Split security into security and firewall update book.sgml to have firewall below security (and before mac) and update other references as well. However, I can see a natural split between network security and host security. In that scenario, MAC would become the largest portion of the host security chapter. That still leaves security with 2 chapters, unfortunately. It only addressed the page count balance between the two chapters. -T -- CP/M-86 *screams* on a PII/400. -- Dave Brown, a.s.r. Not much, really, when I take a look at the topics. Unfortunately it alraady /is/ two chapters (considered MAC to be a chapter in it's own right), so all it does is move MAC down a level and move the other host-based stuff to a new Local/Host/whatever chapter name. Redistributes the text between the two chapters in a more intuitive fashion would be one way of stating the idea. -T -- Laws to suppress tend to strengthen what they would prohibit. I like this idea the best. Ok, granted, in one of aspects I'm a security consultant and so I'm a /little/ biased as to it's importance, but there's a practical benefit as well: Each topic gets it's own chapter. And, seriously, some of the Security sub-chapters suffer from too-many-sub-level-itis. This would alleviate a lot of that. > I do not think that it's good to place Firewall and Mac into one > chapter. But that's perhaps a bit of taste :) Nope, I agree with you. I was proposing to have a network and a host (or local, which Tom suggested for a name) chapter. Firewalling would be in the network chapter, MAC would be in the local chapter. This is now my second-best ideal, though, after the new Section V idea. -T -- "Yield to temptation; it may not pass your way again." -- Robert Heinlein From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Nov 20 02:35:39 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DB37016A4CE for ; Sat, 20 Nov 2004 02:35:38 +0000 (GMT) Received: from moutng.kundenserver.de (moutng.kundenserver.de [212.227.126.171]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3D9CD43D48 for ; Sat, 20 Nov 2004 02:35:38 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from max@love2party.net) Received: from [212.227.126.160] (helo=mrelayng.kundenserver.de) by moutng.kundenserver.de with esmtp (Exim 3.35 #1) id 1CVL68-0001Lo-00; Sat, 20 Nov 2004 03:35:36 +0100 Received: from [84.128.130.104] (helo=donor.laier.local) by mrelayng.kundenserver.de with asmtp (TLSv1:RC4-MD5:128) (Exim 3.35 #1) id 1CVL68-0000K0-00; Sat, 20 Nov 2004 03:35:36 +0100 From: Max Laier To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Date: Sat, 20 Nov 2004 03:35:49 +0100 User-Agent: KMail/1.7.1 References: <419E4747.6070001@FreeBSD.org> <419E510B.6020800@elvandar.org> <20041119203338.GF61766@seekingfire.com> In-Reply-To: <20041119203338.GF61766@seekingfire.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; boundary="nextPart4352230.lrONRM7I4I"; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; micalg=pgp-sha1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-Id: <200411200335.56638.max@love2party.net> X-Provags-ID: kundenserver.de abuse@kundenserver.de auth:61c499deaeeba3ba5be80f48ecc83056 Subject: Re: Proposal regarding security chapter X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 20 Nov 2004 02:35:39 -0000 --nextPart4352230.lrONRM7I4I Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: inline On Friday 19 November 2004 21:33, Tillman Hodgson wrote: > On Fri, Nov 19, 2004 at 09:01:15PM +0100, Remko Lodder wrote: > > Tillman Hodgson wrote: > > >"Firewall", by itself, doesn't feel like an intuitive place to split > > >topics to me (aside from the convenience of its size). True enough. The Section V idea seems to manage this by avoiding the issue. I think you're agreeing with me, but I'm not sure ;-) Currently we have: III System Administration -> Security -> MAC -> Biba III System Administration -> Security -> Firewalls -> PF III System Administration -> Security -> Kerberos5 (I'm the Kerberos guy, so I used that as one of the examples ... I have selfish motives too, yanno ;-)). The proposal is to turn this into this: V System Administration -> MAC -> Biba V System Administration -> Firewalls -> PF V System Administration -> Kerberos5 Basically putting all of the security topics on equal footing. This highlights the importance of security, makes individual topics easier to find (and less "deep" in level), I think that you're saying the same thing but I figured it was worthwhile to spell it out explicitly just in case I'm not the only one who was unclear. -T -- Freedom is an elusive concept.
